Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

We just did a flat roof , about 30k worth . The guy wanted to do gravel and tar ,he was not a fan of rubber membrane. The smart engineer we had loves membrane but admitted he had no actual experience with them .
I’m a big fan of strong opinion with no background, it’s why I’m here LOL

Rubber membranes can be installed by anyone but they will only last if installed by actual experts. The seam tape for them runs $200 a roll for the stuff that lasts as long as the roof and the preparation needs to be perfect. The thing with membranes is if they ever leak then finding the issue and repairing it is easy. Nothing wrong with tar and gravel but there’s better. I have another flat roof that has torched down tar paper that’s doing pretty well. Either of those would be good. Finding the problem on a tar and gravel roof is a bit like looking for Long John Silver’s treasure…also to put one on stinks!

Got the light switch issue in the pantry figured out and completed. Added a deco box on inside, wired up from the old switch outside the pantry into here, wired up a Lutron Maestro motion switch and it works great.
Also painted the ceiling of my daughters bedroom pink because my wife thought it would look great. Tomorrow I’m painting my sons bedroom as well as adding a feature wall to the master bedroom. Then the office……even though the house is 1.5yrs old and at the time paid painters a ton to paint the entire house.
Being married has great benefits but only painting your house once is nice also.

We have a “Color lady” , she’s a designer by trade and comes to the house when we think about paint and changes . Best $150 I spend as occasionally she says , yeah don’t do that .
I paint because I’m cheap and it’s not hard you pay attention to get good results. Painting rooms over because it looked good in the can pisses me off to no end .

My daughter's bathroom is a white that is accented by the colour of the light reflecting off the neighbour's siding at 9:30 AM.

In another case a woman was never happy when the paint went on the wall. After three tries she figured out that it was the red light reflecting off her neighbour's brick wall.

I have this 63x25” area where I’d like to do a built in shelves and desk with a base cabinet on both sides. Trouble is I don’t have a power outlet in there and I don’t want to run visible cords from the current plug locations. I have a power plug in the attic almost directly above this room that isn’t being used and also have the internet cables running from the attic down inside the wall and out to the router about a foot from the ground. Can’t get through studs from that rooms plugs to add a plug inside that alcove so my ideas are to either run 14/2 cable from the attic plug down inside the wall and add a plug at that alcove spot or the easiest way I could use one of my good 20ft extension cords and plugging into the attic box then run it down to that spot.
It will be powering a router, laptop, screen, docking station. If I add a plug I have to use an extension cord from it anyways whereas if I just use an extension cord from the attic I don’t (has a 4 outlet end).
Recommendations? Is the extension cord idea too redneck and unsafe?

Redneck it. I assume it was a closet. It looks exactly like my sons bedroom where he turned his closet into his 'office' with desk, tv, pc, monitor etc. You have access to a plug above so just run the extension cord down and call it a day. Easy to cover the hole and refinish if you ever put the closet back to what it was. I didnt have anything above so I ran an extension cord from the plug in the front wall and used the conduit cover things just to make it look a bit better.

While I’m typically all for rednecking it…electricity isn’t one of those things. Replace the extension cord with a 14/3 wire and you’re good to roll.

Would be a ton of work to get power from the other switches…doesn’t look like many options except from the top.

Please don’t red neck it . Greenlee makes a 4ft long drill bit that has a flexible shaft and you can drill through studs side ways in a wall . Or up or down.
While it’s not what we do here you can also call an electrician……
I’d cut drywall if I had to and wire it up right . While the risks are pretty low with a cord , it’s still a risk

Do it right the first time or it ends up multiple times more expensive to fix.

I've moved wiring across finished drywall by using a speedbore at 45° through the wood studs from both sides, then fishing through. For each stud you have to patch two loonie sized holes. The Greenlee flex drill would do the same with fewer holes. Try to keep the hole in the middle of the studs.

In both cases just hope you don't meet another cable coming the other way.

Windows (house) are 22yrs old. One side of my b/r window had been fogging up for 3-4yrs, and it was builder's grade. (no low E, only 1 side slides, etc, etc.) I ordered a new one in June, it came last week. Too hot lately, so I installed it today.....no surprises was very nice.

Extension cord going from the attic to the room below is a bad call. Running one from the outlets in the room may be more visible but it is OK.

Depending on the in wall blocking it is not too hard to run/fish proper 14/2 from the attic outlet to the desired location (or from one of the outlets on the same floor). Some small holes in the drywall and a drill. As others pointed out there are also 4 foot long flexible drill bits for this application.

Third option (not a fan but it is an option) they make surface mount wiremold that the 120v can run in and it can go along the outside of the wall to add an outlet. Paint to match wall.

For rednecking electrical, yes it is unsafe but I am sure the like has been done many times without instant fiery death.... there are other considerations.... If something did happen due to it, good luck fighting with insurance, if you do it right much less likely it will be a problem but also less likely to be flagged..."it was always there". If the attic is insulated you will create a vapour path, doing it right (and permanent) can be sealed up. If you sell the house at some point, home inspector sees redneck electrical now the entire house is suspect.

Sis was about to toss it out as they built up their backyard…so free it is to us!

Trampoline and play house so far.
At the cottage, we ended up with 1/2 of one of those long orange tubes that they used to have in school playgrounds, for free.

Love free stuff!

My buddy so far has gotten: garage door, snowblower, kayaks, doors, insulation, metal detector, and Lord only knows what else.

He’s a contractor so as clients are dumping things he just takes them off their hands.
