Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

One of my kids used to sleepwalk at an early age.
We found out when I woke up at 4 a.m. to him yanking on the car door, and screaming for his brother to let him in.
After that all the doors had an extra latch at the top, so that he couldn't wander into danger.

We ran down my nephew at the cottage. He went outside and was headed for the lake while sleepwalking. No security measures were implemented (not my kid, not my cottage, not my responsibility). Thankfully it seems like a one-time event and didn't end in disaster.

250k btu off a 50kbtu heatpump would be 5 hrs x 2.7 kw = 13.5kwh of electricity at approx .13/kwh. $1.75. Gas is about
.01/1000 BTUs so 250k would cost $2.50.

Now the average July temp in barrie on is 68f. You need 10btus/hr/degree/sq' of surface area to maintain temp. Typical 16x32 is sound 500sq' and typical pool temp is 80. So 500sq'x10btux24hrx12degrees = 1400000btu/day. That means a 50kw heater won't turn off.

You must have a solar blanket or smaller pool.
Off peak electricity last month was ~280 kwh more than the month before. Some of this may be house A/C (average temp three degree warmer). A lot will likely be the pool heater. Assuming the difference is all pool heater (which it isnt), about $36 for the month (including power, distribution, regulatory and HST). September will be the telling month on whether this was a good idea or not.

Hey all

Could use your input, my parents need a set of handrails for the wall part of the stairs. But everything I am seeing is for decks, or moulding for rails etc. I've only looked at big box stores, since I'm not sure where to look.
Unless I've missed what I'm looking at.

Inside or outside? Wall construction?

You probably need a few of these and a stick of wood for the handrail.

Yeah I forgot to mention, it's interior. So the 1 side of the steps has rails etc. The other is the wall where the new rail is to go. It's a 80's bungalo probably dry wall, studs etc.
My dad is having mobilty issues so having 2 rails would be helpful, even with limited steps, there might be only 4.

Then the brackets and rail I showed will work. You probably only need two brackets but I would put at least three (into studs). You've got an elderly person that may end up with a lot of their weight on the railing and I don't want it to fail.

Thanks for the info, just to be clear the moulding you linked to will work with these brackets?
I was under the impression the moulding would be for a set of rails, which is why it didn't click with me at first.

Those brackets should fit into the groove on the bottom of the handrail. Groove is not required, that's just a style thing. Go to store, grab a section of wood you like (style, grip, strength), grab a mount and see how it works with your wood, buy stuff. Mount brackets to wall, sit wood in place, install straps around brackets to wood, mark and trim ends of wood (may want to remove before this step to move mess outside).

I would recommend the end user grab the section of wood. I can handle the 2X6 on my daughter's porch steps but my wife can't.

To meet code you have to be able to negoiate the stair run without letting go anywhere of the handle , hence the fittings that attach on the bottom.
If looking for something different than home depot selection , visit any stair builder/railing shop in your area , there are lots, and they have different selection of rails and brackets if style matters.

So this one is a weird one. We’ve got one of those above ground pools. 48” x 14’.

We didn’t set it up this year due to kids and no MIL, but def planning on it next year.

Questions are:
1. Is it possible / advisable to drop the pool into the ground about 1/3 to 1/2 of the height? Basically reduce the height that’s above ground?
2. Any relatively inexpensive way to heat said pool?

I’m thinking of digging about 2-3ft into the ground, laying some sand, and putting the pool in. Then building a deck around the pool to have better access. Not sure if rigid side pool would be better for this task?

Can’t justify an in ground pool, but have seen some being done like this.
Here's a do it yourself heater if you are allowed to burn in Missisauga. A van load of wood from the cottage and you have a warm pool for the week.

Any recommendations for a decent garage chair that doesn't take up a ton of room yet is comfortable? MIL visits weekly and my garage is a good place to retreat to.

A lot of people I know swear by those gravity chairs... never sat in one myself but if you head to home depot or whatever you can try it out. Folds up out of the way easily too.

It doesn't fit the space requirement but a Lazy Boy from the dump makes a good crying chair when everything goes wrong.

Stash or trash? I've got to clean up the shop. All those little pieces of wood that will come in handy some day. The "I'll get around to it" projects. The pipe dreams. The "Might have it" drawers. The boards that I don't want to cut into because a smaller board would be less waste. Sigh. Some people have garbage. I have antique garbage.

I share your pain….can confirm that I’m a hoarder.

‘I’ll use it next year for sure’….10 years in a row.
