Enough of COVID...what are you doing to the house?

DIY on the enclosure part has a potential major weak link, you.

If once the roof is off you throw your back out, you are screwed.

I was slow one summer and decided I could do a little job on the truck. Three hours of leaning over the fender and my back went into spasms. I could barely walk for a week. A contractor called me out of the blue and I had to tell him I couldn't work because of my back. The truck repair didn't save me the day's wage or pay for the drugs.

Once the shell is done you can take your time.

That was the plan @nobbie48. Get the shell done and I can do the rest. But if the shell costs me close to 200k….we’ll it makes me reconsider.

Currently starting to button the whole thing up.

A bungalow around the corner is getting topped in winter but I think the new owners are not planning to move in for a bit. Unlike adding a room they're redoing the whole floor plan on the main level. Even the attached garage is getting a makeover.

IMO the biggest issue is the instability factor in the economy. Regarding the bungalow being topped, maybe the new owners are stalling the sale of their old place waiting for prices to go up a couple of hundred thou and pay for half the addition on the new place which was a livable fixer upper. It could go the other way.

One of my biggest concerns is getting a garbage contractor to take the job and demand more money mid way.

Acquaintance was having his cottage lifted. Guy got it up, lifted it about 2ft, and then demanded more money. Owner said GFY and the contractor took all his equipment off site.

Fun times…

It's already on beams. Time to get a crapton of bottle jacks and cribbing and up we go.

You talking about a bin? Arn't they flat rates, I've always done it that way. Pay upfront full amount/deposit, then they rebate you back if it's not full under a certain weight, but it never is...

No…garbage as in a useless contractor. Hired to lift up the house 2ft from existing grade to have a taller basement.

Valid concern: "Sorry sir, Now that the roof is off we can see that Kevin..........................and we'll need another $75K. We'll give you a day to write a cheque and then will put a lien on the property so no one else will touch it."

We are looking at new upholstered furniture and deliveries are six months. I assume a deposit is required but with the touchy economy how secure is the cash?

40 ish years ago builder of sailboats told an owner that his new 30 footer was just about ready and he should sign his trade in over to them. They didn't sign the new boat over to him and a week later the place went belly up. He lost his boat as assets and never got his new one.

I'm a cynic.

Hot tub is leaking and circ pump is dead so no heater hopefully the leak is the pump I have a new one. The kicker is I can't get to the pump because the tub is through the deck and I need to pull a section of deck out to open the access panel. The removable section of deck is frozen in solid. Will have to try on the weekend when it warms again. Luckily I have a outside hot water tap and can fill it every night.

Boo. When it got really cold a few weeks ago ours went into "protection" mode. Jeebus, that is programmed to destroy things as quickly as possible. Pump 1 on for a few seconds then off. Pump 2 on for a few seconds then off. Repeat until a pump breaks. Protection mode is a good idea but it's hard to imagine worse programming.

I remember having that problem with my hot tub.

I fixed it with a chainsaw.

I have considered it if it is more than the circ pump it will be a consideration. Then I have the fun of redoing that section of deck.
