The majority of deaths in the US occurred in 5 Blue states where governors decided it would be a great idea to put covid positive patients back in nursing homes instead of quarantining them...

Actually, the majority of deaths in the US have happened since December last year. The nursing-home situation was indeed a big mistake made early on (one of many mistakes made before we, collectively, knew any better), but it is ancient history at this point.

Even in New York State, the recent second wave accounts for about 40% of the total deaths.

With the exception of Houston in Texas, the high density urban centres tend to be in blue states (California, New York, Illinois, Massachusetts, etc.), so it's a difficult point of comparison purely from a policy or compliance perspective. Similar to comparing ethnic impact, as social factors can be more significant than biological ones, with poverty, obesity, public transit, and multi-generational homes all playing a part.

In other words, the fact that some low-density red states have similarly poor numbers says a lot...

@Baggsy Christine Elliot just said K2V was identified as a hotspot due to LTC homes in the area. There was no political motivation. wtf. I thought all LTC was eligible for a long time and it would seem to be easier to hit just the homes instead of an entire postal code. Still seems stinky.

I just did a search for long term care homes within 10km of K2V 0A1, which is the Costco address. Two are within 1km, but neither of them is in the K2V area. Forrest Hill is K2K and Garden Terrace is K2L. Interesting.
Search for LTC Homes By Postal Code

Edit: Ottawa Citizen article on the question: 'Head-scratcher:' Kanata hot-spot designation raising questions

Second edit: Found about 100 or so houses behind the Sobeys:

From Coronavirus (COVID-19) Vaccinations - Statistics and Research

In terms of population with at least one dose, Canada is today at 19.91% and we're adding about 0.7% per day. This is where the UK was on 10 February, and they were also adding about 0.7% per day back then. The UK is now at 47.42% two months later and levelling off - but I understand that most doses being delivered there now, are second doses.

From United Kingdom Coronavirus: 4,375,814 Cases and 127,123 Deaths - Worldometer

On 10 February, the UK had 12,989 cases. (Normalised for population, this isn't far from where we are now.) On 10 March, 5915 cases. On 10 April, 2589 cases.

The deaths situation is not comparable; the UK was in the process of recovering from a massive spike in December and January, so their numbers started out a lot higher. They now have roughly the same number of daily deaths as Canada despite the population being 1.8 times higher.

The UK also is just coming out of a pretty restrictive national lockdown, with things only starting to open up yesterday. We'll see how well the AZ vaccine works in about two weeks. I'll be watching closely. Much as I find the BoJo government equal parts venal, corrupt and incompetent, they finally did the right thing and went full lockdown after Christmas, and then stuck with it until vaccination numbers could climb and the weather warmed enough to have pints outdoors. Much like Italy gave us a look two weeks into the future last February (which we mostly ignored), the UK will hopefully give us some idea of what's coming for the summer...

It's tragic how it takes a huge amount of deaths before some countries really start to take things seriously.

Some random thoughts

1. Feds claim they are doing great at securing 11M+ doses yet they forget that 2M+ were the unexpected American loan of AZ and Covashield supply

2. 7M+ doses of the claimed 11M doses are Pfizer. The 7M is logged as a vial with 6 doses. I thought that there was a shortage of the specialized syringe for the 6 dose strategy and only Saskatchewan was doing well at getting 6 from each vial. This aspect has gone quiet. If most are really being used as 5 dose and not 6 dose then federal claimed dispersed # of shots would be 20% higher than provincial reported jabs.

3. People scream when Ontario jab #s go up and down daily. 34 PHU. Each PHU has a different reporting protocol. Halton for example only reports jabs 1x per week.

Doubt the US is going to be too worried about getting that AZ back, and they may even give us all the rest of what they have eventually as it seems they’re not going to use it. I think it’ll be “conveniently” approved right around the time their vaccination rate starts to slow and they’ll state they just don’t need it anymore after the fact.

That’s rooted in the fact they’re still worried about the (admittedly very minor and super rare) side effects of the AZ shot causing vaccine hesitancy like it has here. Reportedly they’d rather just drag their feet on approving it until they conveniently don’t need it anymore and the problem solves itself.

Yep

But I wasnt referring to it from the American side but from the Canadian supply side regarding debating how well or poorly we are doing on supply.

Spin to win.

I'm surprised cbc put that out there. It's been an unwritten rule to NOT publish teen suicides in the media because it creates copycat actions.
I'm not surprised that the numbers are up, and nor should anyone.
We lost a 14 nephew 3 years ago. It is absolutely devastating.

Sorry to hear that Wingboy. Sadly I have known people from 8 to 70 that decided they couldn't deal with it anymore. Absolutely devastates everybody around them.

Add me to the list of random strangers if anyone needs to talk. After the 70 year old took himself out (healthy, good life, depressed), I started actively reaching out to more people as when people are in that much despair, they have trouble seeking help. No idea if it helps but I feel better for trying.

When there is an emergency in teen mental health. We need to talk about it . Hold the government accountable . Long term effects from these lockdowns .

The government had a year to work on this . They have field hospitals set up and not used . As far as I know . . Where is the military with their field hospitals . They called in the military for a snow storm .

Just shows you how badly broken our healthcare system is .

You can just pop down to VentilatorsRUs to kit those field hospitals out and then round up some unemployed restaurant workers to get the machines working and monitor patients.
