Duke 890 or MT09

Bizarre to me buying a hooligan bike for the street and wanting all these electronic goodies. Cruise control I understand would be nice, but a $10 throttle rocker does the job, maybe I'm old fashioned or just old lol.
The 790 isn't really a hooligan bike though. They don't market towards that either. The 690 SMCR and 690 Duke are much more in that class. The 790/890 is a very stable naked bike. Their marketing dept was calling it "The Scalpel" and all the emphasis was on things like canyon carving. After riding it for as long as I have (44,000km) and compared to many other bikes, it has too much handling competancy to be called just a hooligan bike.

If anything, the older MT/FZ-09's deserves the hooligan title much more with the completely inadequate suspension setup and binary throttle. If you don't like wheelies or going fast in a straight line, there's not much else to write home about.

I’m sure there was no wrong answer to this, but going with the Mt-09, talked to the dealer they’re going to match the Duke 890 pricing and I liked the sales guy, able to just shoot the **** a bit compare stories auto dealer to power sports 👍

Surprising how much a sales guy can affect what you buy (unless you’re preset on something specific)

congrats, ask any questions when you get it :)
In the meantime here is link for ya - start reading about all the issues and remedies for MT-09 suspension setup :)
Best source of information IMO

Thanks!
We’ll see how it rides and go from there, everything I read says they’ve made huge improvements from the original fz09/mt09 with the 2021 refresh.
Try and see what can be tuned out, it’s adjustable, and then upgrade from there

Late to the party, but if we're talking hooligan bikes, may I suggest Ducati Hypermotard as another alternative:

bruh, it's like 70% more expensive lol. also as i recall no cruise, at 19k that's a phat negative from me. same problem i have with the super sport.

Yes, but it's also 70% more awesome! :D

Hmmm, i've ridden the 950 SP i would not say it's 70% better then an MT09 to ride, but then again i'm not much of a 'hooligan'. however looks wise, it is super rad i'll give it that.

Not the point about wanting it, at that price point i would expect it. Like I said; same issue I have with the Super Sport. 20 grand and no cruise is a slap in the face.

In the end, the whole 650-999 naked segment has lots of options with some targeting a dollar figure, and others targeting a performance figure. Honestly, anything will be good, 'cept the NC750.

I really don’t see the big issue about cruise. Useless anywhere in the GTA and it’s got to be a really low traffic day on the 401 to use it if you are that far away from town as well and how boring of a day trip are you doing if you’re using cruise control.
I’ve had cruise on my Multistrada and S1000XR and never used it once. Heated grips used lots, cruise never.

Agreed.

For me, it's about the intended purpose of the bike. Yes, it's expensive, but it's a hooligan bike. You're off and on the throttle and brakes like a mofo. It's not a touring bike where you set the throttle and forget about it for the next 18 hours of your Iron Butt superslab run.

It's like getting a Superleggera and expecting heated grips and seat warmers (AND cruise control, of course) just because it costs $100,000 USD.

I also have CC on one of my bikes. I've only used it once in the 2 years and 30+K I've owned it. Just to see if it worked or not...

Clearly you need to ride more
:sneaky:

I'm on Evos side.
we non ballers can't have one bike for each task.
i wish my hooligan 690 supermoto had it.
I only have the one bike and routinely do long slogs on the highway where it'd be a godsend.
so much so, I'm seriously thinking about an aftermarket one for a grand.

Ever since I had cruise on my Tiger I would never again get bike without cruise, that is a deal breaker for me now.

Fair point. But in this case, it's less of baller status, more of the old fart syndrome: "Back in my day we rode to school uphill both ways without cruise control!"

For myself, I honestly don't see the need, and it wouldn't be a deal-breaker when shopping around. Most of the newer bikes I've owned don't have CC.

It's probably because I don't ride very often...

To each their own.

To avoid a new thread hopefully we get a few answers here,
2022 MT09 obviously the dealer has offered extended warranty 36month plan on top of the factory 12mo (48 total) for $1000.
They also have the road hazard which I was *wink wink nudge nudge* told no limit on number of tire replacements and no $ cap
Hypothetically you could end up with new tires yearly if you ‘accidentally’ run over a screw every year for 4 years cost is $700

Any one have any experience with Yamaha service plans?E08FA7E2-3E15-4485-919E-03E138800FF5.png

no experience, wouldn't pay for it. the model is pretty bullet proof.
