Seems to me the gtfo crowd here wants one lane of traffic in gta so they can then weave in and out of as they please
The 401 has the heaviest commercial traffic in North America and the right lane only crowd wants them ALL to stay in the single lane
What a joke!
I think that there's a difference in opinion because the GTFO crowd (of which I am one) is basing their opinion on lower traffic density of US interstate and secondary highways as well as European highways. It's very easy to stay to the right and only go in the left to pass, even on two lane roads, because there's a lot less traffic. Lane discipline is easy because that's all people ever grew up with. Even the dumbest drivers don't really see examples of stupidity there. (Not counting urban areas in the States; I've never driven in New York, LA, Atlanta, or anywhere like that.)
This strategy that I'm about to write about helps with my own frustration while driving or riding in the GTA. And would really help reduce overall frustration if every person did this [when pigs fly].
In the GTA, we have lots of lanes and lots of traffic. For everyone to stay to the right wouldn't really make sense. However, those people who tend to drive the limit should absolutely stay to the right. But it's not terrible if they stay in the middle due to lots of people coming on and getting off the highway. On a three or four lane highway like the 401 or 400 this is common.
Another thing to keep in mind is that one shouldn't have a set speed at which they cruise at. A range of speeds is better because it allows for flexibility.
In the GTA, my cruising range is 110-115 kph (car or bike) and passing is 120 (unless there's someone coming up quickly in the left. In that case I'll accelerate to 125 or 130 and GTFO, haha). I typically hang out in the right lane (or middle lane if there's traffic) and do 115 kph. If I come up to someone going slower than me, I'll reduce my speed to whatever they're doing, down to 110 kph. So if they're doing 112, I'll match it and maintain a safe following distance. If they are doing slower than 110 I'll pass them on the left or right. If it's in the left lane, I'll go whatever speed is necessary to get out of the left lane without blocking others. If it's in the right, I'll just stay in the right lane and go 115 until I come up to someone else ahead of me going slower. Then repeat the cycle if they're going slower than 110.
I think my system works well for the GTA in non-rush hour conditions. If you like to go 130, set your mental range from 125-130, then stay in the right or middle lane until you come up to someone doing less than 125, then pass them. If you like to go 100, you really have nothing to worry about and should just stay in the right lane. And if everybody adhered to it we'd have a lot less frustration on the road.
TL;DR: In the GTA, cruise in whatever lane you want, except the left. Unless you drive really slowly, then stay in the right. Set a range of speeds you'd be willing to go and only pass if it gets below that.
