Did anyone get out this year? I remember a few threads on Jerky, so I was wondering if anyone got around to getting some fresh venison. We filled our four tags by Wednesday morning, and with the roadkill I got in the summer, the freezer's pretty full.

What do you do with the skins?

I take them to a depot, run by the natives I beleive, and they tan them and use them for whatever. You get a hat and patch for them. A buddy once had one tanned with the hair on, lots of $$ and he said he wouildn't bother again. Are you looking for some tanned hides, or to tan them yourself? I believe you can buy tanned hides form the person I drop them off at. I can check if you want.

Is that restricted or non-restricted in Canada? :D

Anything u can't fit in your pocket is non-restricted

How is roadkill? I've heard if u don't drain the blood from the carcass the meat is all bruised. Don't u have to cut the throat?

I've wondered that as well. I hit a deer a couple years back and the police officer asked if I wanted it - I said no, so I had to sign a release - he threw it in his trunk and it definitely seemed destined for consumption.

I know if the heart is still beating, u can cut the throat and u're good

Just got my first Doe tonight. Hanging in the garage next to the bikes. Buddy of mine is really good at tanning hides, and he's going to help me out with it. Another group of buddies all take their hides to the depot and get the hat/patch to sew on their jackets. I've always wanted to learn how to tan one so I'll learn on this one.

i haven't fired a shot in hunger in a few years. gonna have to get back into it again :P

Regarding bleeding out, it's the same as when you shoot them. They usually die from the trauma and ther's no point in trying. The only animals that it seems critical to bleed out (unless you're Kosher) are pigs for some reason. I came upon the roadkill a couple of minutes after it was hit, and it was already dead. The older gentleman that hit it did not want it, so I loaded it into the back of my van (luckily the seats had been taken out to make room for lumber) and took it to my buddy's place. He has a drive-in fridge and freezer for his fur operation (1000s of mink) and we gutted it and skinned it out in his grinding room. Hung it in the fridge for 10 days and cut it up on his meat bandsaw. Wrapped it in butcher paper (National Grocer has that) and put it in the freezer. You just need to remove the really bruised parts and toss them. You may find hidden damage, but that's fine, you can just grind that up later for burgers, or throw it in a stew.

I don't kill **** - but 16 guys I know, bagged 14 - two of them were 'skunked'.
They also received 16 OPP issued tickets @ $110 each, for not wearing helmets on their quad runners (on private property), yet they were let off with open booze, around 9:30am - Bancroft area.

These don't sound like the kind of people I'd want to shoot around.
