LEHI, Utah (ABC NEWS)- An 8-year-old boy has died after accidentally shooting himself in a car while his mother was inside a Utah convenience store, police said.
The boy was alone in the car about 7:40 p.m. Monday in Lehi — a city about 30 miles (48 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City — when he shot himself in the head, Jeanteil Livingston with the Lehi City Police Department told KSL-TV. The boy died at a hospital on Tuesday morning, police said.
The shooting appeared to be “unintentional and self-inflicted,” police said in a statement.
The gun had been left under a seat in the car, Livingston said.
Doug Shields said he was putting gas in his vehicle when he heard the gunshot and then a woman screaming. He went to the car where it happened. He told KSL and KUTV that he heard the mother say the boy found the gun under the seat.
Monday's shooting happened less than two weeks after a 5-year-old Utah boy died after accidentally shooting himself with a handgun at his house in Santaquin, which is about 65 miles (105 kilometers) south of Salt Lake City.
Utah does not have any laws to penalize someone for failing to secure an unattended firearm and leaving it accessible to an unsupervised minor, according to the Giffords Law Center to Prevent Gun Violence. The state also does not require unattended firearms to be stored in a certain way or require a locking device to be sold with a firearm.
No charges are currently pending against the mother of the Lehi boy, Livingston said. The shooting is still under investigation.
In St. Louis, a 4-year-old girl died Monday from a gunshot wound suffered while she was in a house with three other children under the age of 10 and no adults present. Police are trying to determine who was handling the gun at the time of the shooting.

It's Utah. Probably 4 wives and another 14 kids waiting in the wings.

No - let's just punish the idiots. Make it as tough to get a gun permit as it is to get a drivers licence.
So hand them out in cereal boxes as special prizes?

If you would have said, “Make it as tough to get a gun permit as it is to get a Western European drivers license” I would have been on board.

Yes, there are stupid, irresponsible people in the world so lets punish everyone.

My kids never had unsupervised access to my firearms... 'Same with my power tools.

How about at their friends house? You could do everything right at your own, and then their friends parents are morans and leave a gun out. Changing the laws to try and make it safer for everyone should be a no brainer. But then here's your comment.

Every state is different. A friend in Virginia has a carry permit but can't carry into a federal building. If he has to go into a post office he has to leave his sidearm in his car. His wife doesn't have a carry permit so can't stay in the car as she would have care and control. The last time I spoke with him a person couldn't carry in a place that served alcohol.

Or, and I know this is a completely radical idea for Americans, but how about actually securing the gun so care and control is established by metal and not proximity? A well-secured gun is bad hammer/bat at best.

Walter Mitty syndrome. I might need to rescue a damsel in distress any second now and can't be hindered. Hindering by being double the recommended weight and being intoxicated doesn't count.

Watching the videos of the hilariously poor training most have had is very disheartening. If you're going to carry as you think it's important for emergencies, practice holster draw/replace 10x every morning when you strap up. Similarly, practice removing protection from lock/box/whatever 10x every day. It should take less than a second or two to bring it into play. Most of the fumbling draws take five or ten seconds from an unprotected holster as they have no muscle memory. That doesn't even begin to touch on actual shooting. This should be more like a pilots license. If you want to carry, you need to have shot at least 30 rounds in the last 30 days and you need an annual checkout to ensure you are competent. If you can't hit what you are aiming for, there is no reason to be carrying bullets. You can have a license for blanks as they are just as scary and you won't hurt bystanders.
