Dealer Trade In's

I just got a message from Suzuki Canada indicating that their supply of 2022 models may be limited unless folks arrange down payments now.... hmmm.

With the shortage of new product are bike dealers more eager to take in trades these days to bolster their supply ?

Maybe ? If it's anything like the car business right now dealers are surcharging for new product and demanding top buck for pre-owned vehicles. You're still likely better to sell privately, but if you don't want the hassle ???

sounds like marketing hogwash.

Dealers might be more eager to take in trades, but as always private sale will net a lot more money.

In 2020 and 2021 dealers ran out of popular models - folks had to wait until the next model year especially with sleds, ATVs, side-by-sides and personal watercraft. Suzuki Canada has no skin in the game marketing-wise , their 2022 stuff is already allocated to their dealers.

yeah but dont they say that every year tho?
"BUY NOW! DONT WAIT!"

A friend sells cars. They typically have 200 new vehicles on their lot. They currently have two. He can't offer as much as a private sale for a trade-in but a late model trade-in is often fetching close to original MSRP so you can save many thousands in tax. The dealership is happy to have something that looks nice that they can deliver tomorrow and many people don't want to (or can't) wait months for stock to arrive.

I keep getting calls / emails about both my Volt and Odyssey to be traded in.

Sure would be nice to get top dollar for my trade...but do you have something I can actually buy available?

No different than buying a house, sell for a high price...but you need to buy a replacement. Just more zeros in the price.

My BIL may flip a 10 yo hyundai. It has value right now and he can afford to be without two vehicles for a while. Dealer gets stock today and a sale for a new vehicle to be delivered in a few months.

It's funny, but nobody wants to believe that we will be limited with everything this year. Not just bikes and cars but everything. I tried to order a certain model black stainless steel fridge and stove a few months ago.
Depending on what your bike is worth, remember you save the tax off the new bike when you trade it in. So if you trade on a bike that's worth $8000, you would have to sell it for $9040, to be even on the trade in, and you don't have to deal with Kijiji guys offering you $6000 for it.

In my own riding group, I personally know of four 2022 motorcycles being waited on for delivery. Their prospective owners put money down in November/December. It's a thing these days.

Depends on how much the dealer thinks he can lowball you, and how quickly he can then move the unit and make a profit. So condition, mileage and whether the bike is a popular model, etc are big factors. Reselling junkers will cause them more headache from an OMVIC standpoint.

But the bar has certainly lowered the last couple of years. I'm sure they are taking in less desirable bikes and offering more for them on trade-in, knowing they'll move anyway at pumped-up prices these days. Just having inventory brings buyers into the showroom, so the dealer can upsell them on other models.

How’s it work if you trade your bike/car today for too dollar…then wait 8+ months for delivery and in the meantime the market tanks? Or you have an accident in the meantime?

My buddy waited around 8 months for his Highlander and he kept driving his car in the meantime that was traded in eventually.

They'll do a final inspection right before trade-in. I'm sure the deal has small print allowing for this. As long as there's no significant additional wear or damage, they'll honour the original offer.

did not know that about the tax free situation

as for the shortage, creating a sense of urgency is the oldest marketing ploy in the book, only during covid, the wolf really was there.

I purchased a 2020 KIA Telluride March 2020. I having been getting emails from the dealer advising me that I could get about 80% of what I paid for it new in a trade in. Similar used 2020 Tellurides are on Autotrader listed for the same or more than I paid for it new 2 years ago.

About 3 - 4 weeks ago KIA sent me an email telling me to expect 2 - 8 month lead times on new vehicle purchases, and to plan accordingly.

SIL purchased a Hyundai Palisade in September as he couldn't find a Telluride anywhere with less than a 3 - 4 month lead time. Lives in Mississauga and drove to Huntsville to purchase the Palisade, dealer had 4 new ones on the lot at that time.

you don't avoid the whole taxes, you only pay tax on the part you pay. so if trading in a 30k car to buy a 40k car, you only pay taxes on the 10k.

It's pretty crazy out there. I paid $50K all-in for my 2019 Tacoma brand new.

Today, my exact year and model Tacoma are selling for ~$55K on Kijiji. Used. *Before* taxes and fees.

DF?

Edit: This one is my exact model: 2019 Toyota Tacoma TRD Sport | Cars & Trucks | Burnaby/New Westminster | Kijiji

65K kms...

Got an update last week on the status of the wife’s new car. ETA to the dealer is now last week of March instead of the first week of April. When the sales guy called saying he had an update, I was fully expecting him to tell me there was going to be a delay.
