Dealer Trade In's

"Oh sorry, the car still hasn't been produced at the factory. No VIN yet, I'm afraid. Please stop calling us, we'll call you when we hear any news. Thanks for the deposit you put down 2 years ago though..."
A few years ago, I bought a white car, vin # xxx and got a sheepish call a week later that they had been transitioning software and my vin had already been sold in the old system and no white was available in the province. Grrr.

Yeah, VIN and bill of sale is no guarantee.

I negotiated a killer deal on a car once, signed a bill of sale and got a VIN. Salesguy sold the car to another customer who offered more money.

Son buying used vehicle online from dealer, likes everything on paper, they make a deal , deposit is sent . Drives 2 hrs to dealer, car they are showing him is NOT tyhe one he put a deposit on, VIN is different, salesman is adamant its "close enough" . Older sister is with him ,she tunes up the saleman, rips the sales manager and may have kicked the receptionist on the way out. Deposit is refunded, appologies all around , she still called the AMVIV , Albertas version of OMVIC .

They keep trying to loose the 'dealer' stigma , and keep at it.

this happened with me and @Evoex once

I called ahead to make sure the bike was still available for sale, asked boss to leave work early, drove to 3 different banks to withdraw the amount of cash and drove 2 hours...upon arrival dealer says its was sold a few days ago(someone put a deposit)

So I yelled at them for a few hours, after which they give me an identical but new bike for MSRP

few days later dealer calls and asks me if im still interested in the other bike(his financing fell through) I said no.

Eventually evo ends up buying that bike

I always wondered whether some dealerships just bumped whoever was in line for a new vehicle for buyers who were willing to pay a premium over MSRP. There's no way to tell other than the salesguy's word.

"Oh sorry, your car *still* hasn't come in yet. But don't worry, you're #1 on the wait list. Thanks for the deposit though. Don't call us, we'll call you, m'kay?"
Out dealer will never sell over list....and all orders have unique numbers attached to them. Whether your dealer shares that either you is another matter...but dirty **** like that works right up until it doesn't. We know we have to keep our guests happy as they will remember being treated badly next time. Do not get me wrong dealers are selling everything at max profit. But thr scenario you are suggesting doesn't work if you have salespeople. I want the car to go to MY guests.....not to someone else's who paid more....

that's why you ask for the vin as soon as it rolls out of the factory! =p
Believe it or not but we only get vins when the vehicle is released to our dealer...so the day before they arrive. We used to get vins the day it was built...so for something from Japan I would have a vin a month before the car arrived. But we do know the car is coming and have an order showing the dates and your name. If a dealer gives you a 2-3 months date...that is a guess. I have trucks coming in June for specific guests with dates that are within 5 days.

Even the insurance offers are getting up there ..bought a 2009 base model Odyssey for $16,750 in 2012 - financed it for 5 years at 4.9%, driver side door got dinged right at the junction with the sliding door. Other driver owned up.

Aviva decided it was a write off and offered $7800 ...geez $7800 for a 12 year old van !!!
They offered $3600 if I fixed it myself which I happily took.

Glad I'm not still in the market ...should get a decent amount for it when I sell it in December.
Buddy at big Honda dealer in Brampton who is client and who I bought it from says he has ZERO Odysseys available....used or new.

Any BMW bike buyers waiting for their bikes to arrive?

Had a call from a bud that told me he had ordered his new bike in Dec/20 and got it last May. He managed 6K on it. He made arrangements to upgrade it with the same dealer last Nov with an impressive trade in value but now he was told not to expect the new model until mid summer. No big deal but disappointed as the dealer had conditioned the deal on him holding the mileage as the bike was expected in April.

He argued that his intention was to take the new bike this spring. Dealer gave him the same story about lack of shipping containers and that BMW HQ is considering air freighting bikes from Frankfurt. Ya sure.

Anyway he's having his lawyer look over the offer he signed.

It’s a really tough time for car/motorcycle manufacturers , steel and aluminum went nuts , no chips , plastics are in short supply and all the boomers ( those pricks again lol) didn’t go to the Caribbean 4 times in the last two yrs so screw it let’s all buy new cars and bikes . And we will pay MSRP , because who cares ? Not going on a Baltic cruise.

Supply chain is a huge part. No Yuasa batteries, Dunlop or Avon tires because there were no containers, ships or trucks to move them last year. No parts= no final product.
Same goes for new machines- it doesn't excuse price gouging. Order and wait BUT get the hard numbers down on paper before signing on the bottom line.

Own a ‘20 s1000xr. There was a brake recall last year and I never got the bike serviced for that because there was a shortage. They were putting all the incoming brake kits on the floor models first to get them out the door (people had orders).

I also work in automotive mfg. There is massive delays across the board and huge, huge increases on commodities as @crankcall said. When I stopped working in September it was still common to see containers sitting at ports for 2 or 3 weeks before getting on rail to Toronto.

My buddy is waiting on a 2022 R1250GS. He put a deposit down early December and was given a window of 10-12 weeks for delivery, which means the bike should be arriving in the next couple of weeks or so.

He hasn't heard about any delays.

Got the exhaust leak fixed on our 08 Yaris. Had let it go because we looking at something newer. Eff that.

…and when you finally get the VIN, you get to deal with the delays due to lack of shipping containers, backups at ports, labour shortages, etc.

I actually factored all this in when I decided to buy a bike in late November 😁

They should be able to tell him exactly where it is. BMW is pretty good with being up front about everything (depending on the sales person!).

My wife’s new bike has been born/has a VIN, but is sitting at port waiting to make its way across the ocean. Currently no ETA.

I know of a few guys who got call from the dealer to trade in their 1-2 year old HD 2500 trucks for the same or more than they paid for them. All of which took the offer.
I was just offered 4k more than I paid for a Yamaha R1 3 years ago.
Also posted my second vehicle on kijiji to see if I could get my money back out of it since I don't necessarily need it (2018 jeep wrangler) and was contacted by about 15 dealers putting an offer in without seeing it, certified cheque and no safety. top offer was within $500 of what I was in it for all in with the taxes I paid for it 1 year ago. Crazy you can drive a 50k vehicle around for a year right now for basically free.

I enquired about ordering a new F250 today and salesman said a year wait. They still waiting for one they ordered last April. Would be 2023 model.

That's really not a bad idea and cost effective for some scale. I've flown my bike to the west coast twice and they offered Frankfurt as an international destination - manufacturer could charter a big Airbus or Boeing freighter and likely fit the entire years inventory in a single shipment to Pearson.

Spoke too soon.

He was told first week of April now.

And so it begins....

I was told they were considering air freight last year as well (from multiple dealers) in the spring when a lot of customers were waiting on bikes that were stuck in Germany. At least they provided an accessory credit due to the delays!
