Darwin at work yet again!

IMO dying chasing your dream is probably one of the best ways to go.

Somehow I doubt that's what she was thinking when she was freezing her azz to death on that mountain, leaving her family behind.

Wow this is an invitation to have a philosophical discussion about death... and in that case it was obviously the mountain's fault. :D

Thats so sad, but at the same time i can't get over this quote “The family asks the municipal council of Rawdon to work on putting in place stronger security measures to avoid any future tragedies.” What does the family want, a fence? Sign? Sorry to say but you cannot prevent something like this, people have brains for a reason.

Yup. Probably this:

I agree with the first sentance. I would think that her assessment of the risk involved would have been affected by his professional opinion given his expertise, had he provided false assurances that it was safe. She's not the professional in the situation and hasn't done this type of shoot before - the same cannot be said for him.

If he is indeed a professional, I personally think he should have some obligation to ensure that there are proper precautions taken and/or adequate warnings provided about the risks, where he is knowingly doing a shoot at a location that poses a risk of bodily harm or death to anyone at the location. Not just the model or client, but also his camera crew or any other people assisting with the shoot.

Being a professional photographer does not make one an expert on river conditions, or an expert at assessing any type of safety risk. Being a professional photographer makes one just that: an expert at taking photographs. I don't have to be a professional anything to know that stepping into a rushing river is a potential safety risk. She's a fully grown, mentally competent woman who made the choice to set up this photoshoot. She made the decision to wear her dress, she made the decision to step into the water. Her demise is of her own doing.

Wouldn't you agree that an ignorant risk is riding on a race track that has a 1 foot thick concrete wall that you can slam into, as well? ;) Not that I'm to talk though! lol

And if someone slammed into a wall at the racetrack, then I'd lay blame on their shoulders too. But it's definitely not an 'ignorant' risk - most motorcyclists understand and accept the inherent dangers in this hobby, and take responsibility to mitigate them.

I'm beginning to see the problem now.
What? She's not true blonde?

Reminds me of the ill-prepared Toronto woman who died on Mt. Everest chasing her dreams.
Reminds me of a girl who wanted to peer off the barrier on Niagara falls to take a picture. Only to fall in.

Which answers the question, if they build a fence there, there would be an idiot to climb over it and die. As they say, if u try to make something idiot-proof, it would just make them better idiots

Edit my ramble down to.....an ignorant risk is that where either the circumstances and parameters are unknown, or willfully not calculated through bravado or stupidity. Those "unknowns" can be as simple as your own bodies ability to react, let alone something like the speed of the running water (which should have been testest first!). The track conditions you mentioned are for the most part factored into the risks we take, and we accept a certain likelihood of death and or pain. I truly question whether this lady factored in the possible risk of death for the photo. I certainly would not be going after a knee down shot on my wedding day!

In all fairness though I did stop at a racetrack once on a romantic trip to Venice. However a few laps in, I realized downing the bike may mean the trip gets cancelled...so I packed it up, considered myself lucky and went on my way with my wife. What I did not do is seize upon the fashion to smash, damage or destory my bike on a racetrack for an awesome photo.

What a misleading title -- here I was getting excited about a guy who has been dead 130 years possibly planning another discovery voyage only to find out it is a story about some twat in a river.

We live in a society where every tragedy is deemed preventable, and someone else is always somehow responsible. We just can't accept that people often make bad decisions that sometimes result in tragic consequences.

Amen to that! Yeah, let's fence off the entire river and hire more QPP to patrol the entire length of it.. As if Quebec is overflowing with tax dollars

Could you imagine how many idiots a year would fall into this, without a fence?

Or maybe, Darwin would take care of a few of them, others would learn to watch where they're going and supervise their brood.

ahahah, he's one lucky bastar d
Imagine ur gf actually get a dead body of her bf in a box at her home, thats quite creepy.

Ban cardboard boxes!

Like seriously! Why don't they legislate mandatory warning labels warning people of possible oxygen deprivation! How are people going to know to put airholes? Obviously the courier company is responsible for this mishap, seeing as they're professionals.

Every oxygen molecule also needs a tag saying "Needed for staying alive"

It amazes me that you guys are sympathetic to the "poor photographer" who had to witness her death, but the bride is stupid.

Maybe he was the one who suggested the photo shoot location, the pose, and her positioning and she gave deference to his professional advice - that is typically how photo shoots go when there's a professional photographer involved. Maybe he even assured her that he's done tons of these types of shoots in the exact same location and showed her his portfolio pictures of other brides posing there.

I did not say she was stupid. She did make a mistake, however, and a very costly one at that. I do however think it is stupid to destroy an item potentially worth thousands of dollars for the sake of a few photos.

We will likely never know who selected the location for the shoot so it is pointless to speculate.

This is why you let kids be kids and make safe mistakes.

Isn't that the whole truth right there. People from Western culture have so little contact with the real world these days that a fast moving creek looks more like a calender picture to them than something they should be cautious of.

One of the problems is the newspaper article is misleading and contradictory at best. The first paragraph states she drowned in a river. As Stormcat's quote said, she wanted pictures of herself swimming in the "lake". Of course, this quote comes from the photographer, who would have some potential gain from saying it was her idea. Then they put a picture of a "river" that just happens to be near the location of the death. Supposedly she died in the Ouareau River, but in the picture they don't mention the name of that river and don't even say it was the river she drowned in. Perhaps it wouldn't look so dramatic if they showed the actual river, who knows why they couldn't get a picture of it. I wish journalists would stick to facts that can be verified and if you must have a picture, make sure it relates to the article. I'm sorry for her death and her family's loss, but she did a stupid thing and paid the ultimate price. Please notice that that is different than saying she was stupid.
