Daily sports car?

Doesn’t matter if the transmission can handle it or not, if the trailer setup is 1,000lbs or more and MTO decides to weigh it.....

Not a issue they don't care what the trailer weight is as long as it has car plates. You can tow anything you want with car plates up to your g license maximum.

Those are GVWR, he needs to be looking at GCWR for this argument.
Exactly; which (to my knowledge) are not published for sedans/coupes. So, I go with the rating the Germans came up with. The guys who built the car are the most reputable source for information regarding its capabilities.

With only 1000lbs to play with you are more likely to pop over the GVWR once you include tongue weight, belongings in the car, passengers etc.

I wonder how insurance views it if something happens and the vehicle is over the GVWR. I’ve never been involved in that kind of situation but I imagine they look into it if the payout is high enough.

They will look into EVERYTHING if the payout is high enough.

So what is the tongue weight on your trailer and how many people are normally in the car when towing? Two people in the car and I suspect it would be hard to exceed GVWR. Four people in the car it's probably easy.

There was a great article diving indepth about NA vs EU tow ratings.

Doesn't work anymore but this thread summarizes what it was about:
Great Explanation for USA vs EU Tow Ratings

basically, differences in testing methodology and weight distribution on trailers/caravans.
average higher speeds straight-line highways vs slower, hilly, curvy roads.

Rough numbers and I could be wrong.
7x12 trailer 2000lbs
Bike 400 lbs
Tools, helmets, gear, wheel chocks, cabinets, whatever else 500lbs

So let’s say 2800-3000lbs. Tongue weight is usually around 10% so 280-300lbs added to the curb weight.

2 adult males 360-400lbs.

I’m thinking there would be 300lbs or so wiggle room before breaking over the GVWR.

Actually it's a little lower; I got it weighed on a commercial scale not too long ago. With everything I take to the track, I'm just a tiny bit over 2200lbs. (The trailer is 6x12 all aluminum). I experimented a bit with tongue weight but right around 180lbs (8%) is very stable around 100-105kmh.
The nice thing is if it get's windy, I can just move my generator forward which bumps the tongue weight to around 225lbs. Back to the GVWR, I am about 150lbs, tongue weight we can say is 200 lbs for 350lbs used out of the 1000+ lbs limit. Well within specs as far as GVWR goes.
Anyways, I don't want to derail this thread with towing too much. People can do their own research on it and make their own decisions ?

I've been pulled into an MTO station while on the way to TMP with two bikes on my (heavy-duty home-built) bike trailer behind my VW Passat TDI ("trailer towing not recommended"), because it appears that they were pulling over all trailers. Car had a Class 1/2 (don't recall) hitch on it. They weighed the trailer axle (didn't tell me the number but I'd guess 1400 lbs) and sent me on my way. It's within the capacity of the hitch class that was on the car, it's within the load capacity written on the trailer tire sidewalls (to be honest, I'm not sure they even bothered looking), it's not over the weight threshold beyond which trailer brakes are required, the combined vehicle is obviously within my driver's license class (they didn't even bother weighing the car), and that's about all they can say about it.

A single-axle trailer behind a light-duty vehicle and without any yellow commercial-vehicle stickers involved, normally doesn't attract attention unless obviously stupid.

Glad you actually calculated it. I've heard a lot of people just throw the EU tow ratings up and not realize why there is a difference or what GVWR/tongue weight is.

Sorry wasn’t trying to knock your set up, just mentioning that the 1000lbs between curb and GVWR can go pretty quick.

Cool ride! Enjoy it

Didn't take it like that at all, it's good you mention it since not everyone would necessarily take it into consideration!

You mean like this? ?

ummmmm........

Wtf. "Believed", "reportedly", $270,000???? I know it has some paperwork but I would want locked down provenenance before I spent that much on car parts.

According to one of the commenters, the person who owns the motor and title would be a likely candidate for purchasing this to do some sort of restoration. That would be pretty cool.
