It took them this long to de Bangle-ize their cars. They look so much better without the Hello Kitty tail lights.

Civic Type R - No, looks like a kid drew spoilers all over it, not subtle at all. Looks more like a coupe than a hatchback

Mazda 3 GT - I liked this a lot, and with AWD and the new Turbo, I had one for a week, it's amazing. Has everything from a heads-up display to heated steering wheel, and more reliable than the Honda. I like the 2019+ design, I'm just not sure it will be a classic, or age well

I'm not going to disagree with you there. The next gen type R should resolve those issues if you've seen the prototype which will hit production soon. They definitely softened the looks.

Mazda is a company that is definitely punching above their weight. It's tough out there and they keep scrappin' away with the big dogs and actually churn out a compelling product. Good on them! I love stories like this.

As for rating the mazda higher in quality than a honda. I wouldn't go that far.

Perfect.

Reliability has sometimes been classified as "how quality changes over time." The difference between quality and reliability is that quality shows how well an object performs its proper function, while reliability shows how well this object maintains its original level of quality over time, through various conditions.

Buick ranked 4th place... lol

The CX5 is built in Japan and doesnt ratttle like a tin can.. I think it is a step up from the CRV.

My brand new GLI is a joke for quality ?.

Like @Evoex pointed out, I meant reliability, which Mazda has been doing really well. Quality wise though, I thought the 2019+ Mazda 3 GT I had for a week was really good, up there with an Audi A4 I had before that. It was the first Japanese car I drove in a long time that made me consider leaving German/EU cars.

Also the fact that Mazda don't use CVT, and have some pretty cool skyactive tech is something I liked.

In terms of the next gen Type R, I still don't consider it a hatchback, more a coupe. And it's just too busy, from different size exhaust tips to all the air ducts, looks like kits a high school kid would like to throw on a civic imo

Although I don't like the new MK8 front end much, its still much more subtle, clean, and classy.

Strip off most of the tupperware and there is an interesting body shape on that civic. All of the factory rice makes it look terrible imo.

It looks like something you'd see at TMP when a North York parking lot "group" rents the track for the day (before the carnage).

Try a Buick next time, I hear they are really reliable....

lol, I think we are mixing quality and reliability. A Ferrari or Aston Martin is quality, neither would be a reliable daily driver. I don't agree with that article on quality being the same, or equaling reliability, too many variables in the two from finishes to materials, and parts longevity.

Take for ex carbon fiber bicycles, they are some very good quality ones, yet they are no where near as reliable as steel or aluminum, they have shorter life spans. I also mentioned the Mazda's reliability, because I know it would be better than VW's. If quality and reliability where the same, Toyota wouldn't have Lexus, Nissan wouldn't have Infinity, BMW wouldn't have Rolls Royce etc...

I think the new Type R looks good with all the 'go fast' bits on it removed. Same goes for the WRX/STI...get rid of that massive wing in the back, and I think it looks great. Bring the hatch back in, and you've got a winning package (in my opinion of course).

Agreed. I like hatchbacks but don't hate the vehicles that look like they have a trunk but hinge at the top of the glass. I truly hate vehicles with tiny trunk lids. I had a Jetta many moons ago and a 19" CRT monitor would fit in the trunk but didn't have a chance going through the opening. It had to go in the front door, over the reclined seat and then over the folded back seat to get into the trunk. The golf that followed it was substantially smaller but I had three tablesaws in it at one point. I couldn't have gotten a single one in the Jetta.
