Coyotes

Coyotes aren’t usually interested in cats or raccoons — they aren’t on their normal menu because coyotes don’t like prey that fights. Our 14 year old 9lb cat chases coyotes and foxes that step into his turf.

Indoor cats and small dogs are a different story, they lack defensive skills and coyotes will take them.

There's more than twice as many coyotes running that ravine this year than years past... a new group.. that killed/dispersed the last set. rabbit bits.. cat heads.. possum pieces.. racoon heads and parts.. skunk pieces.. we find all kinds of scraps. There was lots of rabbits hopping around in the fall, early winter previous years.. I stopped seeing them regularly by end of summer this year.

My wife warned me about half a rabbit on the sidewalk around the corner. However we saw a red fox in the back yard on the 24th.

I like the foxes, party because of the colour and partly because they are not as aggressive. They also hunt solo. They don't stand a chance against teh coyotes

I’m not an expert, but I’ve shared my back yard with Coyotes for the last 10 years. They don’t leave parts behind, most of the time they take their kill home unless they’re teaching their kits to hunt. Foxes, weasels, and cats kill for fun, Coyotes don’t.

I had a family of long tail weasels in my yard a few years back, they killed everything that moved, I’ll bet they are the ones leaving the heads behind.

I'm not guessing..
The last cat head I saw... torn separation...partially crushed.. a large puncture in chin/neck.. the blood stains.. the fur/tail piece and piece of front paw... the coyote tracks - my bet is two coyotes, 1 with a gimped left front paw.. pulled it apart.. dropped the head.. and ran around playing or fighting over the body as they headed towards the creek... then crossed the creek.
The cat head before that was also clearly pulled apart.. still had piece of the spine attached.. showed signs of being chewed on.. followed that back to a tail and piece of hind.. tracks- 3 coyotes - 2 bigger than the third - 1 with a gimped left front paw, scat and a pile of puke with bones in it nearby.. 50 ft from one of their favourite spots.
Walking dog at 2am.. hear the sounds of a fight.. come up on two coyotes in a field.. dog chases them out of field.. picks something up and shakes it.. starts playing with it.. flinging it around. while two coyotes sit at the edge of the field watching. Eventually she leaves it and walks back to me.. the coyotes return to it as we walk out of the field. The next day.. go back and find a racoon head with piece of spine, fur and piece of tail.

Went for a walk to try and burn off some calories yesterday evening....2 big coyotes on our street.

Peel Region truck looking for them as some neighbours were calling all worried that they're sitting on their front lawn. Turns out there was a dead rabbit in b/w some of the houses and the coyotes kept coming back nightly to go see them.

Glad I had my walking stick and flashlight as those mofos got closer than I'd like.

Peel Region staff weren't too concerned as the coyotes took off when anyone got near...but they did tell all the dog walkers to keep the dogs within 2-3ft away as any further and coyotes can pounce.

I do keep a "Fox whistle" (Their is a pun in there) just in case. Dogs, Foxes, International 3 whistles. Is a "Help" all over the World. Bike in the bushes, etc. Preferable, on a lanyard.
Might even help for "Woke" Lol.

Those coyotes are the reason I started carrying a walking stick. We’re steps away from Erindale Park so lots of wildlife.

Most harmless…

International call for help is 3 of whatever.. gunshots, whistles, horn blasts, evenly spaced fires, light shining, reflections, etc..

When these get back in stock.
Good to have around for two legged vermin too not a lot of a learning curve and nonlethal.
Be careful walking around with that. Very likely to attract police attention and charges. A more discreet protection device jas a much lower heat score.

This guy is scary too. He picks chipmunks and squirrels off our deck.
