Covid Question

If you're talking to a specialist, you might want to ask about bamlanivimab as well.
It's $1400 a dose, and provinces aren't using it, as it's thought to have a narrow window as to when it can be used.

I am supposed to take a treatment that will immunocompromise me for a while. Specialist recommended I get the vaccine before the treatment. I am very healthy, fit, and seldomly get a cold but **** happens and my immune system decides to chew my myelin occasionally. I will not be immunocompromised when I take the vaccine. Is your daughter permanently immunocompromised or it's more of a period after some kind of treatment? Maybe she could time the vaccine when her immune system is at it's best.

The narrow window seems to stem from the fact that's it's a treatment for covid, not a vaccine

I know "anecdotal" is not "data" ...

... but I personally know one immunocompromised person who has been vaccinated (couple weeks ago) and he's still here.

Said person was the recipient of a heart transplant a few years ago, and is permanently on anti-rejection drugs due to this.

Anyone who participates in SOAR, or VRRA, knows Mike and Linda.

"Is there a risk", certainly; there is no human activity that is completely without risk. Risk can be managed and controlled, but not completely eliminated.

"Is the risk associated with vaccine side-effects greater or less than the risks associated with contracting covid-19 at this person's age and with this person's existing conditions including the immunocompromised situation itself"? Is a question for the family doctor, although for an older adult, the balance is almost certainly on the side of being vaccinated to control the risks associated with covid-19.

It is for this reason that if I were one year older, I would be seeking AstraZeneca vaccination today if not yesterday. Infection and death rates for the UK, which has been using approx 50% Pfizer and 50% AstraZeneca, are readily available.

Right. Big pharma companies have your best interests at the top of their priority chain.
Of course pharma companies are looking to make profits on the vaccine. Just like they make profits on drugs that improve quality of life and prolong life for over a century. I'm sure they make profits on medications that have questionable benefit, but wouldn't it be a better business model to produce products that work?

My wife found out that Durham Region has opened up vaccine appointments to a wider variety of high-risk categories effective today instead of going solely by the age categories as the province still seems fixated on. Website now shows all the details - I fit into one of the categories and got an appointment for Sunday at 7PM. Woohoo!

AZ is distributed on a profit free basis right now. It was developed by academics first then big pharma. I have some ethical issues with some (less common) vaccines but vaccines for COVID are not among them.

Yes to your question, I’m worried like crazy. But she is 27 and she will make the call for herself.

She is very stable and adjusted and of sound mind. She has been following this covid vaccine and has asked all the questions.

Update ... per facebook, Mike just got his second Moderna shot.

He's actually taking part in a study looking at the effects of vaccination on heart-transplant patients.

Go, Mike! Hopefully see ya soon.

FWIW some friends 70+ got the Pfizer shot at the Congress Centre a couple of days ago. No signs of hearses lurking in the area. They have no side effects so far but the doctor that administered the shot said the second shot is larger and there is more likelihood of some discomfort.

It’s been confirmed that my daughter will be getting the phizer shot on the ninth.

She is comfortable with the decision she made.

Excellent.

I did some digging tonight and it looks like the Durham Region options are Pfizer and Moderna. Moderna would have been my second choice behind Pfizer so I'm super happy. But like I said, I'll take whatever in the end come Sunday.

With both my wife and I now vaccinated come Sunday I think summer will be a little more relaxing.

I would imagine the whole family will be getting the vaccine when our turn comes up, I Would never want to risk one of my family members because off my selfishness

I need to dig in as the cardiologist told my MIL that she should qualify sooner rather than later due to her heart attack 2 years ago.

she’s 59 in Peel.

^ Depending on the age categories, that may involve having the older ones wait until the youngest one is eligible, though. If they're in different age brackets, I wouldn't suggest that. It's better if each one gets it as soon as possible, even if it's at different times.

My brother-in-law is getting his first jab on Tuesday. My older sister is booked for 14th April. I have to wait, I'm a year too young and Peel Region hasn't done the over-50 in specific hot-spots that Toronto appears to have started (even though they probably should).

She could book through Shoppers Drug Mart and get it done now. I would if I could.
Just went to talk to her and she said to sign her up. Thanks. Wasn't aware that she was eligible.

Do we know which vaccine is provided by Shoppers? Their info on the page had all 3 identified.
