COVID and the housing market

The difference between a Polish wedding and Polish funeral is one less drunk at the funeral.

BTW there's a Russian airliner that's been parked at Pearson for about a year. If the battery isn't dead and you can do a quicky flight course the Ruskies may thank you for returning it.
Im surprised someone hasn't vandalized at least the tail end of it. Sitting very close to the fence.

It will cost thousands in parking fees and replacement parts to get that bird back in the sky.

Last I heard the parking bill was well over 250k. Its not leaving anytime soon and you're right, there will be maintenance issues before flying out. Is there an aircraft mechanic in toronto capable of signing off on it or do they need to fly in a mechanic? How amenable will Canada be with providing a workspace to get than done? An annual on a jet sitting on the tarmac would suck.

Sounds like a quick way to get taken done by some CF-18s.

What's scrap aluminum going for?

engines alone worth the asking price they couldn't get for years.

With only a few Antonov giant jets in the world , they will have to fly in a team from Europe to get that thing back in tyhe air. There wont be anyone in Canada to re certify that plane 'officially' .
I not surprised its being let aloneand has had no vandalism, want to get caught fast and spend some quality time in jail, fool around on a federal project

First thing that came to my mind when they parked it there was
"Someone is going to put some bullet's thought that tail"

Very easy to do.

Back on track...this is the reality that will be hitting a lot more people this year as rates stick around...and the next batch of low rate mortgages come up for renewal in 2023...

Mind you....$1400 for insurance and cars doesn't help, but their insurance is fairly cheap for newcomers to Canada.

I'm finding it hard to sympathize when people bite off much more than they can chew.

I had read that article earlier , I felt bad, I think it’s another couple that thought “!it’s all good, never ending” . Some tough lessons .

Many people got caught up in the mania.

Out of my friend group...their HELOC rates have skyrocketed yet 'what's another vacation for 10k...I deserve it...put it on the LOC'.

It's a perpetual never-ending loop. And they're mocking me for being 'cheap' and not wanting to blow 10k in LOC on a vacation to the south. I'm coming around to the Polish trip...and will see what my new salary looks like after tax so I may just bite the bullet and 'enjoy' the last big trip.

Two $600 car payments, $500 a month to renovations, multiple dogs, morons. "Buy it and you'll be ok long-term" only works if you have the cash flow to prevent collapse. Put off the renovation, dont have pets you cant afford (especially multiples), etc. Everybody knew that there was a good chance rates would increase but they budgeted their life around the lowest interest rates in history. They may be engineers but they are dumb.

I really don't get why people like that were doing a variable rate mortgage when it was very obvious rates were going to go up at some time soon

I went to variable Prime - 1.3% from a fixed 2.95% and my reasoning was that rates will go up...but not this fast or this hard.

So my bi-weekly payments went from $980-$800-$1210 currently within a 1 year timeframe.

Does it suck? Yes very much.

But we're able to still cover it without really a major issue simply because I don't go into debt for fun. I'm not 100% responsible with my money...but I'm also not financing trips and things I can't afford.

Cuba...I put away money all year for that trip so it was paid for cash. Same goes for some car repairs.

I also put away monthly amounts for my property tax as it sucks getting to Feb and getting a $3k bill for half the property tax to be paid. And another 3k in a few months.

I guess that makes me 'cheap' and 'stupid' according to some friends as I refuse to finance a lifestyle I can't afford.

My guess is variable was cheaper. They looked at the rates and thought they were saving 1%, what could go wrong? They have a spending vs income issue not a mortgage rate issue. They focus on the one thing outside of their control as the problem but as you said, that could have been controlled for a while but they chose not to.

At a point in life I had to dig out of a deep hole , that wasn’t all of my making , I would caution anyone that would listen , yes life is short and YOLO ect. But spending two yrs of that life fixing debt and the relationship stress is not worth it . Live large long enough, it will happen.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with frugal or “ cheap” if if let’s you sleep at night . Yes the beds are nicer at the Sheraton, but it’s $529. A night , that’s not good sleep for everyone.

It's hard to feel bad for stupid people. Sorry to be harsh but if you didn't do the math and include a few what if's before making the largest purchase in your life....

One thing that has to be explained (shockingly) is that the mortgage is only a part of the overall cost of housing. There are so many other costs involved, that people only focus on the mortgage aspect and say 'I can afford that'.

Property tax...300-400/month, utilities...100-400/month, insurance....100/month...upkeep....$$$...cars...$$$

It all adds up.

On that front, since you still seem to be circling a pool, check with your insurance company. I have heard that increases your rate substantially. This house cost roughly double our previous house and insurance cost roughly tripled. Not sure how much is pool and how much is other factors (eg rebuild cost on this house is more than double rebuild cost on hold house as land value is a lower percentage of total price for instance).
