COVID and the housing market

Seems good I was quoted 300 just to redo the main floor. No addition.

I was a bit surprised actually. Waiting for actual quote to see what’s what.

He said it would include the raising of the main ceiling by 1ft, addition, framing, all the way to the drywall.

Mind you I don’t have access to 350k right now. But I’ll see what’s what.

North of a 1/4 million. What tangible benifits do you get for that kind of money?
That's a real nice family vacation every year for the next 25 years.
Or a nice vacation every year along with a nice new bike every 5 years for for the next 25 years.
Just food for thought.

In our case it would add to resale and enjoyment of the house being actually able to see the spectacular view we have etc. My mother is actually pushing us to do it before I die as my dad tended to be frugal and died fairly young without getting to enjoy life as much as he should have. I can also afford it it doesn't make any difference to the other things you mentioned we will still do those things.

It would allow us the space to basically grow better into the house and have a separate office and area for me and my wife from the other 4 in the family. 3 kids and 1 grandma.

Unfortunately I am not able to afford it as easily as @Scuba Steve so it’s a much tougher decision.

I will most likely hold off as it’s just too much money at this stage in our lives, and we would have to make very many sacrifices to do it.

The exterior and interior insulation…could probably do that for within 40-50k as I’d do majority of the work.

Don't overextend yourself especially with a young family wait until you have the money in the bank to do it. Even the insulation it will never pay off but will be more comfortable.

My wife's grandfather paid cash for his house in scarborough back in the 50s wile being a laborer and the only one working with wife and 3 kids. How times have changed.
I paid cash for a house once. $42,000, bought it from CMHC in 2019.

Agreed. 20-30k for insulation will pay for a LOT of months of enbridge sticking it up my bum.

Just got my bill for the mild month of Jan-Feb…$270.

I may break a cardinal rule of mine and take a HELOC to fly to Poland for a wedding. Last one in our generation of cousins. Grandma turning 90. All aunts and uncles still alive and hitting their 60s and 70s.

May be worth it for one final large awesome wedding (about 70-100 cousins total).

How are watch prices in Poland? Maybe grandma is sitting on grandpas old mechanical watch and nobody has expressed interest? It may not even be worth much, it's just cool.

Go! Grab an AK, cross the border and plink a few Russians for fun!

Well one grandma died recently and everything got left to a cousin…my last grandma has 10 kids…and they have 2-3 kids…and some of them have 2-3 kids…and some have 1….

So…I’m a long line away from anything lol

This will be the largest and last wedding of my generation of cousins. Basically coming together from North America, UK, Ireland, and possibly Netherlands and Australia.

Will be an unforgettable event.

Especially if you all go plinking russians as a bonding exercise. A common memory to share with those around the world.

You pretty much have to go to that wedding
I want to go to it very much. $8k for the tickets alone....and another 2-3k for a rental car considering the size of my family.

We typically get a free car from the family as there's so many available...but my cousin offered to pay for it under his business. But I feel bad.

How long do you need to go for?.

I went last summer and rented a car for 11 days I think and it was around $300-400 CAD. 4 door sedan.

Have prices gone up that much?

How many seats do you need ? 8k sounds like a lot . I’m going to Prague in June , tickets aren’t too bad .

We need 4 seats. Prices to Poland have gone insane. Typically used to be $900-1200/person. Now...$1700-2200/person. Majority isn't to Poland, but it's become a hub for travel to the Eastern Block, and Middle East. Lots of Ukrainians, lots of eastern block citizens, and Warsaw has become a hub to the east.

2 planes / day, and each is 100% fully loaded...so you can imagine. They can add a 3rd...and it'd still be full. Plus August is the worst month.

@oioioi we're going for 3-4 weeks, and need a car that'll fit 2 full baby seats, and a booster...plus luggage. So a 7-8 seater as a minimum just for us.

I checked Expedia...$7000. Checked another site...$3500. And my cousin's friend has a rental business so he offered us an 8 person 'bus' for around for less. So we are looking.

Apparently tickets from Hamilton - Berlin are < $1000...but I don't think I want to have connections with 3 tiny kids.

Will call the travel agent this week to tell her to keep an eye out.

@mimico_polak
There is a new air line offering cheap flights starting up. No frills tickets.
All flights out of Hamilton to 25 cities on Europe. Catch is all flight need to stop on Iceland for a lengthy layover.
But you can fly for several hundred bucks.

As for your car seats in Poland.
When we needed them. We just bought one new and later gave it to my cousin or left it for family to donate to a friend or whomever needs it.
Didn't bother bringing it with us.

The difference between a Polish wedding and Polish funeral is one less drunk at the funeral.

BTW there's a Russian airliner that's been parked at Pearson for about a year. If the battery isn't dead and you can do a quicky flight course the Ruskies may thank you for returning it.
