Probably not the brightest idea to be promoting the fact you plan on bypassing the quarantine hotel when you return....but thanks for letting everyone know who you are.

I could care less for snowbirds. financial hardship. Flaunt the no travel rules to winter in the world's most infected COVID hotspot, then pay the price if you want to come home.

Better yet, just stay there.

The original virus is one thing. It was here from the get go and recent spread Is largely from local sources. The new more dangerous variants come from travel. Stop the imports until we have the original under control.

We won't get the original version under control until we look at the sources of spread. I think the governments are picking the low hanging fruit. Stories leak out of transmission in factories and offices, not just restaurants, bars and stores.

Zoodles and his co workers face the same problem with transit.

It could get interesting for WSIB if a lot of people got Covid at work and were off for months. Will companies end up footing the bills if their WSIB rates soar because they went cheap on masks. Games are being played. We haven't seen the last of the spinoffs.

Talking with WSIB last week. Covid claims count against your rate group (eg construction) but not your individual company. They didn't state it, but expect rates to climb on business classes that stayed working on site as that is additional claims that need to be paid.

So you're obviously not going to vote Conservative in the next election correct?
At this point who knows . The polls I have seen the Liberals are tied with the CPC . I will defiantly not vote Liberal .

First the UK and now Brazil + South Africa.

With all these different strains that are mutating based on region - do you think the government will start to mandate seasonal or annual vaccines for all citizens?
Or will the hype eventually die down over time and folks will start to treat it like some other influenza virus...

Time will tell I suppose..!

I can't see a full mandatory vaccination program ever. Small chance of immunization passport (no shots, forget about travelling), even smaller chance of keeping people that choose not to be vaccinated out of public places like schools or pools, zero chance of mandatory vaccination.

That's a possibility but it’s important to get most people vaccinated first. That will put a massive dent in transmission and hospital admittance. The Spanish flu wouldn’t have killed as many people if a vaccine was in place all those years ago and the herd immunity/vaccination puts a dent in what we see now as seasonal flu outbreaks.

My issue is whether or not if you start with a particular vaccine type you need to get that type as a booster or not in subsequent years. I don’t think so though.

So ABC manufacturing that made sure everyone wore masks, rearranged lines to minimize contact, sanitized, increased ventilation and split shifts gets to pay the increased rates caused by DEF manufacturing who did nothing. If so it encourages the behavior of DEF.

Sounds like it. I think WSIB was under pressure to encourage reporting of cases. Businesses are already trying hard to ensure that covid cases don't get tied to them. Having WSIB as part of the goon squad would result in even lower reporting rates. Public health wanted as complete a picture as possible. It's probably even worse than your example as company ABC is trying to do the right thing so I expect they may continue to pay the sick employee. DEF sucks so would probably dump them on WSIB. The more of a prick you are, the more you make (in the short term).

It is more likely that a travel insurance company would deny insurance to an anti vaxxer or refuse the claim if the person traveled outside the province.

I could see some countries requesting it too as an entry condition. Especially a country that has not vaccinated much of their population (for instance, I'm not sure about some african countries or india ever rolling vaccine out to all of their citizens).

Wasn't that considered by some here as racist?

Dying a liberal death.

Well, Just got my second shot this morning. At least there is one benefit to being 55... LOL

Its five weeks since the first one and outside the window that Pfizer recommend but the nurse said it would be fine. Fingers crossed.

The nurse also said that I can still get it. Although if I do I would most likely be asymptomatic or the symptoms would be very mild, so its still VERY IMPORTANT to mask up and social distance for the protection of others.

The circle of dumb continues. We have to remember that half the people are stupider than average and average isn't all that smart.

TL: DR Planned eight hour power outage. He feels forced to go wander around walmart to kill time and is worried that may expose him and his children to covid.

"Mark Holland said he lives on one of the streets that will be affected by the Feb. 6 outage that is expected to last from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.

"I'm going to have to go for a long drive to stay warm, dress really warm, kill a few hours at a time, pop over to the local Walmart to burn another half-hour ... hopefully, they won't require the whole eight-hour day," Holland said. He added that he feels forced to have to go out to kill time, and fears this might be exposing himself and his children to COVID-19.

Where does one start to describe the reality choice of replacing a huge switch over an eight hour period vs replacing a blown up facility over a several day period? The components of large pieces of electrical equipment are not sitting around like light switches at Home Depot. If the equipment is outdated it's worse. It's hard enough to find a factory exhaust system for a 40 year old 750/4. And the price when they find you're shut down.....

How does the average person connect the generator to a furnace that is hard wired? Widow maker cord?

It's winter. If the fridge doesn't work put the food in the garage. Fill the bathtub with hot water and let it heat the room for a few hours. Keep the freezer closed. Use the BBQ and cook outside. Boil water on the BBQ and keep it in a Thermos. Since the guy is a bit dense I should mention it has to be boiled in a pot.

Most houses lose ~1-2F/hour. If he preheats to 73, he will be coming out well above 65 (unless he opens the door too often while going out on frivolous trips that were "forced" upon him). Start talking three or four days and it's different, but if you can't survive up to eight hours without power, you are a strong candidate for a permanently installed NG generator.

Our last house was out for ~four days at one point (pre-xmas ice storm). Filled tub and sinks with hot water three times a day. When power came back on, we were still in the 50's.

EDIT:
I am unhappy with our electrical code for hard wired furnaces. It makes it so hard (or expensive) to safely power up a furnace during a power outage. I saw one interesting install where the person installed secondary orange plugs in key locations (fridge, furnace, etc) and if the power went out, the generator energized that separate electrical system. You just replug appliances into the orange plugs and away you go. You're happy, workers are safe, easy peasy.

Not going to disclose my employer . But if you come in contact with a positive person . You are off on WSIB till you get a negative test or 14 days if positive. My employer does contact tracing . It is a front line job .
