Thumbs up for a local business making the best of a bad situation.

Spirit of York, which operates out of the Distillery District, is working to combat the hand sanitizer shortage by using the alcohol from its facilities to produce an alcohol based hand sanitizer solution.

The hand sanitizer is being mixed following strict guidelines of the World Health Organization.

The bottles will be given away to those in need or, for those who can afford, be sold for the low price of $3.00.

The money raised from selling this hand sanitizer will go to local food banks.

They are hoping to create at least 1,000 bottles by Thursday morning, which will then be available for free or for purchase at their Distillery District location starting at 11:00 a.m.

We just got an email in requesting equipment and supplies for the national testing labs in Canada in order to meet demand. Looks like all the research labs are pulling together which is great to see.

Also....Costco.ca has TP in stock. Woo hoo.

Ford has announced that all NA production will stop for ~two weeks. That makes sense as I can't imagine they are selling much right now and don't expect a big rush after restrictions are lifted. If they need to stop production anyway to match forecast volumes, now is the best time to do it.

A great idea from an Ontario doc to double the number of patients that can be supported by the existing fleet of ventilators. It will be interesting to see if it is allowed to be implemented if required (ie would insurance, ethics, medical equipment lobbyist or some other body step in and stop it).

In basic terms, the rig involves pairing patients of similar size and lung capacity, and running two hoses from one ventilator running at double power.

Gauthier says the idea has been studied in theory and tried once before, for people injured in a mass shooting in Las Vegas.

the whole idea of a virus and how they work is insidious, evil
not really alive, not really inert

it's just in recent decades that virus research has crossed over to biology
it used to be the domain of chemists
as doctors wouldn't study anything that was not a life form

A virus is a small infectious organism—much smaller than a fungus or bacterium—that must invade a living cell to reproduce (replicate). The virus attaches to a cell (called the host cell), enters the cell, and releases its DNA or RNA inside the cell. The virus’s DNA or RNA is the genetic material containing the information needed to make copies of (replicate) the virus. The virus’s genetic material takes control of the cell and forces it to replicate the virus. The infected cell usually dies because the virus keeps it from performing its normal functions. When it dies, the cell releases new viruses, which go on to infect other cells.

My wife will be mildly disappointed. She got a message yesterday that her new vehicle is now on the production line in Kentucky.
I’m not surprised they are shutting down...not worth the risk. Be safe.

already thought of that one, anybody know if diving equipment could be made to work?

Not really viable. It doesn't have active control over volume or rate of breathing. They might be able to tweak the spring so if the patient gave it a little suck, the reg fed them air above atmospheric pressure but that is slightly dangerous on a few different levels. If the patient can breathe on their own anyway, I suspect it would be more effective to feed them 100% oxygen than nitrox at higher pressure. Diving gear is not rated for 100% oxygen (huge fire risk if you try). Ontario ordered 300 more respirators. No idea on delivery time.

It would be interesting to see if hyperbaric treatment could help some marginal cases. Fill the tube up and let 'er rip. You would basically be dooming the nurse in with them to catch it though.

That shuts their suppliers down (you), and that shuts down everyone else in the supply chain (includes me). Under the circumstances, it has to be done.

I predict shutdown until 03/30 won't be enough. It will be extended.

I agree. Society won't even begin to fire up again for most of a month at least. After that, the economy will be in the crapper and vehicle demand will be low. I am surprised they picked such a short shutdown.

Fascinating times to live in,
the have excess of everything generation just ended.
.... anybody have a guess why our dollar is taking such a dive? or do currency rates have nothing to do with numbers of sick people?
I figured they were going to freeze it where it was or something.

Anyone live downtown Toronto? are the migratory birds hitting the windows yet?

It sucks, but that's the way things are going. Fixed costs will eat away at cash reserves. Putting everyone on EI allows the business to conserve cash to both survive no-income and fire up when possible. There will be at least a few pay periods between work startup and cash flowing in again.
