Going forward

Restaurants need more sinks / driers

Fast food restaurants have to start giving people cutlery

Doors have to be easy to open without hand contact

Someone has to invent an automatic nose scratcher

Is "Roll up the rim" to win still on? I chew up the rim.

tap to pay should also be in every store too.

I had a long talk with a pro(wife is an experienced nurse)
the death rate is pretty low, and theres no way to test everyone, so the number of confirmed cases is vastly under reported, but you cant miss dead bodies so they're accurate, the big worry is the healthcare system being overwhelmed by low risk cases, and high risk patients(elderly) not getting the care/attention they need.

So the need to self isolate is for:
1. minimizing the spread
2. Keeping the healthcare system function correctly
3. Saving as many lives as possible (mostly elderly)
I'm not sure about 1 (if you mean limiting the number of people infected). I know it is a good idea in theory, but they are predicting 70%+ of the population will get this. The best case scenario is that by slowing the spread (which you may have meant), hopefully by the time the most at risk get their turn we have better treatment options and available beds (I guess potentially a vaccine, but that's a year out, the world economy won't like a year off).

Getting out in front of this , as we finally are is the key. Its shocking how many dont understand 'social distancing' . I met a SIL in the driveway yesterday and she wanted to hug. uh no , we arent doing that now. She giggled and said 'Oh right, I forgot' .
Its pretty grass roots, but thats the problem. Clueless, under informed, or in the case of my Mom , Church is safe......

cant fix stupid

I find many older people just dont get it. My retired inlaws plan over the past week included trying to go to garden show (cancelled), ROM (closed), bayview village, Fairview, church, theatre(cancelled) and various meetings. I asked them point blank what was the matter with them. They didnt appreciate that. I dont appreciate that they are putting themselves at a significant risk of dying just to continue with life as if this isnt happening. They sure as hell dont need anything from one mall yet alone two. Also, if things go as planned, they are looking forward to having their kitchen torn out on monday. Facepalm. Nothing says good times like potentially being locked down in a house with no kitchen.

Then you have much younger people with their boomer fever crap and this doesnt hurt us so continue on with life.

In the middle, I am impressed by the response of the majority.

Pneumonia is actually a symptom not the disease,
it's medical terminology for (lungs full of sh*t where there should be clean air)

I see FB posts where some are saying "Get out and support the little shops if you feel fine". In other words it's OK to touch the clean end of the turd.

I sometimes think of Gene Tierney the actress who contracted rubella when she was pregnant. A fan "Just had to meet her" and slipped out of a hospital to do so at an event. Tierney's daughter was born severely retarded. The self centred b**** destroyed her idol's life.

I don't understand how otherwise smart people don't understand the four day incubation period where you are contagious but have no symptoms. If you have been near anyone that has been near anyone in the last four days you have no clue if you have it or not. To be safe, this period has been extended by authorities to two weeks as some people may have few symptoms or just think they are normal spring sick.

I don't know a single person I can confidently say is not infected (myself included).

I’m wondering how herd immunity will be achieved with the rules currently in place? I’m not questioning the methods, just wondering out loud. I know that people smarter than me have crunched numbers somewhere but I can’t help thinking that we could be extending the issue for quite a while. You can’t quarantine indefinitely and a vaccine isn’t coming anytime soon. I read that trials are taking place with chloroquine (a malaria medication) and a few other existing drugs. I know that in academia labs have closed down except if they are working on covid19 related areas.

musings of day 2 home isolation

I don't think it will be. I think we are just flattening the curve to help health minimize deaths due to lack of resources. I was talking to a doc yesterday and they are hurting as they are down a bunch of staff who are currently in self-isolation due to travel. They will come back online in a week or more and that will provide some relief.

The downside to flattening the curve is this goes on for a long time as we still probably have the same area under the curve. Herd immunity would reduce the area but I am not convinced that will work here. They were predicting a 70% infection rate. IIRC for herd immunity to work you need resistance in the high 90's (which is why a limited number of anti-vaxxers can screw everything up). I think the economics will be the most damaging part of this. We have traded lives for money (which I am ok with). Hopefully, coming out the back side, we can learn to alter what is expected for "work" and make a more sustainable system (I have seen articles that this shutdown will save more lives due to reduced pollution and reduced crashes than it will actually save due to Covid, not fact checked and hard to prove but it seems plausible).

My parents got back to Canada this morning (driving). The border had no line. At all. The first stop was at the agent. A few questions, you should self-isolate, have a good day.

One thing that should come out of this is the need for more nurse practitioners and allowing foreign trained doctors to practice more easily. There shouldn’t be a healthcare bottleneck just because the medical associations have some seemingly random stranglehold on membership.

Porter suspending all flights until June 1. I'm not sure about those that bought AC on the plunge. This is going to be rough on airlines. I could see those that have deposits on Max 8's putting a run on the bank of Boeing to free up some much needed cash (as Boeing has already drawn all available credit, this will be very bad for them).

I'm not entirely sure it is just the medical associations. I strongly suspect the province is in on the game in order to limit health care costs. It is a lot easier to say "we are trying, but there are not enough qualified candidates" than to say, "too bad for you, there are lots of qualified people that want to work, but we don't have any more money to put into health care". Imo, this goes all the way back to the limited number of Canadian med school spots, I think more could exist quite easily but they are being artificially capped. I know many doctors that went outside canada to med school, then came back to Canada or USA to work. They are not hacks.

I am hoping we crossed the hump in the panic buying. Just got back from my local grocery store, wanted to check for water. There was hardly anyone on the road, and the parking lot was almost empty. They also had water! Whew I was thinking this might be another quest.
Hopefully the stores can catch up on inventory.

A very misunderstood condition. I have heard a lot of people in my lifetime say "oh man, i was so sick with pneumonia". Gotta stay home the rest of the week, i have pneumonia. Lol

Madagascar is the one I'm watching, it already had the highest mortality rate from respiratory illness imaginable and you can not go anywhere in the country without smelling Eucalyptus smoke, so from that I read 2 things; either nothing is being tested (which is about a zillion times more likely)
or the nasty little bug doesn't like Eucalyptus smoke.

... you can get cold spray stuff with Eucalyptus in it can't you? or you used to be able to anyway.

grab an under sink filter.....one of the best things I did in the kitchen. Filters last for months

I thought pneumonia was an opportunistic bacterial infection.

Went to sobeys the this morning for bread. They didn't have any. Two young girls in the checkout beside me had about 50lb of beef each in their carts.

Elmira Donuts & Deli has lots of bread. They make it daily in-house. White, whole wheat and cheese bread.
If you need it, you’re not too far from there.

I believe you're right. The thing most people don't realize is that if you have it..... You're in the hospital, probably critical.
