Nice, surprising they have done so well, not a put down (Latin countries tend to be a little more relaxed on things), but good to hear. Considering the surrounding countries are not doing well.
Enjoy the trip!

I can't see myself going anywhere until this COVID is more resolved.

yeah, Colombia is worse off
Peru is really in tough shape
Brazil? disaster

the timing of this for Latin America was terrible
in Ecuador, all the kids going to school in Spain came home for Carnivale!
anyone ever been in Latin America for that, you'll know why they don't miss it

this year it was Feb. 24....and covid had been, unknowingly, tearing through Spain for a few weeks

so the kids came home, partied at Carnivale, stayed in the family home where the grandparents live
and infected the family/communities
Latinos don't lock up seniors like we do, it's common to have 3 or 4 generations under one roof

Some provinces are closing the door on Conscience exemptions, I'd suspect Ontario is waiting for the laws to be tested elsewhere before doing same.

What about all the religious exemptions...

What about all the religious exemptions...
The only religion that opposes vaccinations are Scientologists as far as I know. All other antivaxxers would be taking the conscience option.

Seems kinda silly to have both options, they are basically one and the same.

Tells me you plan on skirting it.

Not at all. Been through one before, and adhered to it perfectly, as I would do again. My intention would be that I'd just stretch it into another 2 weeks of "vacation" from work. I took 3 months of voluntary layoff already, I'd gladly take another 10-14 days.

I'm an introvert who plays an ambivert. I spent my last 10 day quarantine cleaning and reorganizing my garage all alone. I can spend another few weeks curled up watching movies...all good. I just need an excuse to tell work. "The government has quarantined me" fits that requirement. ;)

All other antivaxxers would be taking the conscience option.

Well, until you take away that option, then suddenly all the antivax crazies will suddenly become scientologists on paper, or whatever they need to be to avoid it.

Many more of these quarantines and the sled may live again :)

Got a recommendation for the Melia Veradero from family who's been there. Upgrade to "the Level" and you get private area access, perks, etc.

Start looking around online....aaaaaaaaannnd...closed until February 1 2021.

I can see this is going to be the next problem - a lot of the bigger and more expensive/exclusive resorts seem to have shut down completely. The ones that are open are the less fancy (Cuban 4 star, Canadian 2 star) and are mentioning that "some areas may be closed" and "not all dining venues may be open".

As for the 14 day quarantine on return, well... I could make that work. ;)

it’s been years since I was there but there’s a refinery in Varadero that is nearer one strip of hotels than the other. You want “the other” unless you’re really fond of egg sandwiches.

All you have to do for anti-vaxxers is convince them the general population is avoiding the vaccine because it has tofu in. They’ll be all over it.

Haven't seen this yet.

Well, on the upside, as currently enforced, a runny nose or single cough gets you immediately booted. You cannot return until clean covid test and no symptoms for 24 hours. So the parent may buy themselves one morning but it will cost them the next 3+ days.
Not sure if that is an "upside".
My kid has seasonal allergies.
He is sniffling. He has the occasional cough from dry throat. And he is sneezing. (I'm telling him to sneeze into his mask. I'm sending extra disposable ones if he needs them.)
So they send him home.
We get all clear test.
He goes back to school.
Coughs.
We go through this again?
I'm all for staying home when sick. But for allergies?
And I know, that's where the problem is going to be...they have to draw a line somewhere.

I also wonder now, how many parents will lose their jobs because of excessive time off? (I'm not trying to say that is more important than lives, but you know that people don't want to lose their jobs.)

I wonder if the government will enact some sort of job protection for these circumstances?
That would help, and allow people to keep their kids home.
I have 8 weeks of vacation banked so that I can use it if I need to stay home with my kid.

Idk
I don't wanna make judgments or anything for anyone.
This is a crazy time, no one really knows what's best and I believe we are doing the best we can.
I just hope we come outta this thing soon.

Daycare says that many of the parents have already gone mental on them when they had to kick their kid out. I get it, it is a high-stress situation but the daycare staff are passengers on this ride too. Yelling at them only makes things worse. JT has income package if you require isolation but I'm not sure if it applies to these situations as you rarely get a positive test. Also haven't seen any job protection bills from any gov't. Court of public opinion won't go well for companies that whack parents.

As of September 1, all daycare staff must wear masks and eye protection (goggles or shield). Not sure if this is local health unit directive or province. Daycare staff is there everyday obviously stressed but smiling and getting the job done for crap pay. They all got laid off before March break and some restarted late July, others are still off. Teachers need to take notes on how to be a responsible citizen in a crap situation.

iirc they are also allowed to run at full capacity as of today.

Note: I wrote my post prior to reading about the dr note for allergies. I will be getting one for him asap.

I also agree 100% about the childcare workers. Most I have dealt with are many times more caring of the kids and passionate about their work than teachers making much more $$ than they do.

As always, there are some great teachers out there.
My son's grade 8 supply teacher left a lasting effect on him..to the point that my son will still email him for advice.
My cousin had an unruly student in her class for two years. The next year the principal told her that she wouldn't have the student the following year. My cousin insisted that she did have him, as she was building a trust with him, and his behaviour was better, and his work was improving.

And I don't personally know @ifiddles , but judging by her posts and thought process, she seems to be one of the good ones....plus, she's a Prince fan

My sister was a daycare worker in one of the lower income areas of Toronto years ago. It was a tough, minimum wage job then. Not at all like a young idealist would picture.

ECE is a tough job
much respect for anyone that does that well
It's probably one step above PSW as at least the people you are dealing with are small and reasonably controllable but those caring jobs with crap pay really need a special person to do them. A now retired PSW I know would bring residents home from her workplace (LTC home) when they were palliative to give them a home cooked meal before they died. Obviously not part of her job description and it actually cost her money. Damn, that is a good person.

Yes, and no. PSW that go to your home, have many fewer clients to manage at a time. I guess the equivalent would be a nanny.

I believe this is where the mandorty sick days idea was going to come into play from the gov. Lots of companies had pitiful sick day policies and never mind it being frowned upon if you did use them. Well hopefully people and companies have smartened up during this whole situation and will support peoples needs more then the company's.

The root of the evil comes down to corporate culture. Does the business exist primarily to make the shareholders money or does it exist to support and hopefully enrich those who contribute to its success? Most operate primarily under the first model. In a lot of roles people are easily replaced and the business is more profitable if it allows churn in those roles than if it supports the current position holder.
