So if its private Pharma that comes up with a vaccine and its $10,000 a shot, whos still getting one? I know I am.

That is an interesting question. They presumably will have had quite a few people working on this for a year so there will have been some significant cost involved but we are not talking about decades of research. Also, uptake in the developed world should be close to 100% so you get a huge volume of orders in the first year. Then, presumably, demand drops off the cliff (unless the vaccine is only effective for a short time, then you have steady perpetual income, how dirty do we think big pharma will be?).

The price of that shot should be in the ballpark of a flu shot with some premium for the severity of the disease (one year development and deployment cycle). I would hope they dont try to price it to the moon, or if they did, govt would just say screw you bastards and not grant/enforce the patent as the safety of the masses is far more important than the greed of one.

. i'm not a scientist by no means, but one would think that you would have to build some kind of immunity to the virus if you had it and got clear of it?
That would be a best case scenario, not a sure thing.

TB has been around since before recorded history and the limited vaccines for that are not 100% efficient, not even close.
@crankcall if your 10 grand vaccine is 51% effective will you still drop large coin on it?

Serology testing: may show you have an increased number of anti-bodies indicating your body has been fighting an infection. It is absolutely impossible to know if that infection was a Covid-19 virus, all it tells you is you had an infection recently.
Somebody is sure to ask for a reference for that so here you go:

I'm not smart enough to understand. But theoretically if I did this test now, would it show up as positive because I had pneumonia at the end of March? How would they know (if at all) that it was COVID? Wouldn't a lot of people have it from fighting the regular flu at this time of year?

They test for specific antibodies, not just antibodies in general. It's how you'd get tested for things like measles to determine your immunity.

"Health Canada is not aware of a serological-based test that has been validated for diagnosis of COVID-19 to date."
"Serological tests do not detect the virus itself. Instead, they detect the antibodies produced in response to an infection."
"To date Health Canada has not authorized any serological tests for sale in Canada."

It'll be $10,000 a shot in the USA, but $25 here in Canada. Because murica.

In all seriousness, it'll probably be free here in NA and most other developed nations because the costs of helping the population get immunized outweighs the otherwise cost/drag to the medical system and economy, the same reasons the seasonal flu shot is free here now.

And I'd be very surprised if it was one of those medications that came out and some company tried to grossly profiteer on it - given the seriousness of the situation if some company was stupid enough to try that, governments would almost instantly nationalize the company in question and they'd make $0 in the end.

"Validated" and "authorized" are key words here.

It doesn't necessarily mean they don't exist. It just means that Health Canada hasn't yet validated and authorized them for use here.

They very much exist already. But I do understand they want to test them for efficacy before "rubber stamping" them for sale here as a reliable test. It's in our best interest.

look over the last few yrs, the flu shot wasn't stopping the flu from spreading. it was a hit and miss

Much of that was because it was predictive. They pick the strains they thought would be popular well in advance. Often they dont pick correctly. This is simpler. They know the strain they are going for.

Health Canada was building a test from the ground up, while other countries were switching to testing more of the general population. One of the tests other countries were using, were made here. There are tests around, we just don't use them. Plus, I've heard that there are lots of false positives with some of the tests.

100% This.
