Thanks for the laugh, most Americans you describe never travel further then NA lol.

Around 40 million a year travel overseas.

Around 15 million visit Canada.

Around 32 Million a year go to Mexico.

~ 15 Million a year go on a cruise.

Etc etc. All of those involve leaving the USA for a foreign country. A foreign country that is totally within their rights to tell them they're not welcome if they present a serious potential health threat to said country.

I think you underestimate how many and how far many US citizens travel.

We just went through this last week. Trump wants to open the border again. Canada: We don't want you, piss off.

Not true.

Ugly Americans travel abroad all the time. They're the ones who get angry that nobody speaks English and that they don't serve burgers and hot dogs everywhere. I've seen them with my own eyes.

A percentage travel a lot, I suspect there is also a large percentage that never leaves their state. I think the vast majority of canadians travel somewhere at some point.

This.

Worse yet are the ones who wear Canadian flags so they get treated better...and then still act like self absorbed douches regardless.

Almost 1/3 of their population (93 million) travelled out of country in 2018 which was the quickest result I could get with a quick Google search.

That's a very significant number. And that's just 1 year.

When I worked in Paris years ago ugly Americans were everywhere. They would order things in restaurants by speaking English in louder volume until they were shouting. At fast food joints I offered to order for them in French so for a cheeseburger I’d order a hamburger without a bun with extra pickles, take my order then **** off before they realized. We made it into a sport for a while.

only about 40% of Americans have a passport

And most that have them...use them. See earlier stats I've posted.

There's also lots of places you can travel to without a passport. Quite a few Caribbean cruises departing from the USA can be done entirely without any need for a passport as well.

I'm hoping the USA comes out of this in good shape. A lot of our (and other countries) economy's depends on a good American dollar.

This.

As much as I put down dumb Americans, I have family and close friends who live there and I worry about their safety with all the stupidity on display down there.

Quick.....I think that was the chain. I remember Royales

We're roughly the same age, right? :)

I managed to persuade a group of Americans of a few things one summer during our ”sport” in Paris:

1. a Latin American restaurant had a cocaine dispenser in the bathroom
2. the owner of the restaurant was a direct descendant of Hitler but they should never ask them about it
3. High heels were invented by the british army in Burma so they wouldn’t get bitten by snakes on the ankle

I lived in America for a good part of my adult life. Most of the Canadians I met when I lived there were quite happy with the place, of the hundreds that I met/know, I think I'm the only one who returned to Canada of my own free will -- most stay, most find living there pretty OK.

If you form your opinions of the US and Americans from what you see on CNN or read in the NYT, you might get a passport then spend some time there once the borders open. The US is the most favored destination for all immigrants - about 4x more popular than the next popular on the list -- Canada, UK, Germany or France.

I moved this from the Aircraft Storage thread:

We can't sit inside for the next 12-24 months cowering in fear over this. We are going to have to live our lives knowing it's out there, but also having a pretty damn good idea HOW to avoid it right now.

Social distance.

Wash your hands.

If you're sick, stay home.

Treat everyone like they're covid positive.

It's not rocket science.

A few things have to be in place before we try to resume life as it was before.

The main item is an inexpensive (should be free), quick and reliable test that can be administered as often as required. Preferably one that doesn't require sticking a swab up into your brain...

Because:

If you're sick, stay home.

doesn't work because people are contagious before symptoms set in.

Standard operating procedure should be that everyone tests themselves in the morning. If you're positive, you're not going anywhere.

Second is some kind of policing system that's tied to the test, because there will be a few desperate people who either won't self-test, or if they test positive, decide their need to go to work/go to that concert outweighs the public's safety. Because, you know... they'll just stay six feet away from everyone else...

Further out, we need to find an effective treatment. Hydroxychloroquine, 5G blockers, whatever. As long as it's proven to work and we can save people if they do happen to get infected.

And then lastly, is some kind of vaccine, but that's so far out in the future.

First and foremost, we need to get that test.

I saw this today, it kinda makes sense:

I foresee some sort of testing or screening for every single person before they go into any place where there is expected to be a large group of people. Want to see a hockey game in person, or go to the cinema (or go to MotoGP) ... that's the only way I foresee that happening until this virus is purged from society somehow (probably vaccine). Can't trust people to test themselves and use their own judgment.

America is not one homogeneous place. Attitudes and educational standards differ wildly from region to region. If you've lived in a metropolitan area on either of the coasts, you're going to experience a different kind of America than if you've spent time in the rural areas in the Rust or Bible Belt.
