I'll say this. Scaling up isn't as simple as buying more hardware in a lot of cases.

Lot of people think they know what goes in enterprise IT.

Sorry, if I'm coming off as a dick but I just had a conference call with someone in business side who thinks he knows more about the IT systems than I do.

I represent the business side in my line of work (although technically i'm on the IT side-ish). And yeah we don't know what you guys do most of the time :D
JUST FOLLOW THE DAMN REQUIREMENTS FOR VOLUME TESTING
hahaha
Now what if we went on the cloud?

You and I might have similar role lol. I'm actually close to business also. Lot of times I liason between business and the folks that actually procure and build.

I don't blame IT for this - CTC website dead
they do what they're asked to do within a set budget
no different than any other dept

a public company of that size has a risk management dept
it is their job to anticipate threats to the business and have plans to mitigate

one the most basic questions to ask:
what do we do if the stores need to close because of an event beyond our control?

answer:
make sure we are prepared to handle increased online sales

what next?
do we have the infrastructure to handle a huge increase in online business?

answer:
****-no !

appears to me they didn't ask those questions

Or just didnt feel the need to pay the cost required to answer yes. What are the odds that all of your stores will need to be closed for an extended period of time?

My misunderstanding then.

I agree with you on that. But this kind of event is hard to be on everyone's vision. Maybe they did have some risk management and business continuity in plan that met the financials and constraints when it was created but this event may have far exceeded the planned capacity.

They should have been quick to adjust accordingly though.

My company actually had pandemic planning which was updated pretty quickly once this **** happened.

I don't care what anyone says, the guy has stepped up to the plate.

Doug Ford visits auto part manufacturer, delivers 1000 new respirator masks

I thought Trump was a POS from the get go but hoped that when he was given possibly the most important position in the world he would step up to the plate and use his abilities to make the USA a better place. He has failed miserably.

I voted for Ford to get rid of Wynne and wasn't happy with his short term thinking once he was elected. I like the way he is handling this now. Hopefully he will become more far sited on other issues as they come up.

People were going after individuals for profiteering, it seems some companies also got in on the game. City of Toronto has a crap ton of defective surgical masks that they are returning for a refund. 62,500 surgical masks that were purchased for more than $200,000. So the crappiest possible masks (both in protection and quality) for double the price of N95 masks. Sounds reasonable. /s Publish the company name that tried to pull off that scam. A$$holes.

The names of the principals should be published on arrest warrants for conspiracy to commit murder.

Those men? no sorry, they all die from corona virus.

Didn't Trump can his pandemic watchdog department a couple of years ago.

I don't know how many negative events can be planned for. After 911 there were questions why the buildings weren't protected against fully fueled jumbo jets. After the event it's easy to arm chair quarterback.

yup
I looked it up, CTC runs 3 data centers, so assuming that means they are self-hosted

can't just call Go-Daddy:

hey just a heads up that we may call you in the future to host canadiantire.ca

you're prolly right
they rolled the dice over cost
and lost

So the isolation continues in my home. Not much has changed in past 2 1/2 years because of my wife's condition.Since her release from the hospital on Mar3 we haven't had any contact from any health professional.Yesterday the WWHLIN Waterloo Wellington Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) calls and asks if i would like some assistance taking care of her.Twice a week for bathing dressing etc. The PSW that would do this is i'm sure trained and very good at what she does. Her other patients are mostly elderly.Am i paranoid to say no thanks?

I would want to know the specific qualifications of the PSW and their personalities. That is virtually impossible.

A friend's wife took a PSW course and I wouldn't let that nutbar walk a dog never-mind wash one.

Didnt the province or country just sign up with amazon to be their official distributor of emergency supplies? They arent a bad choice for distribution might but I hope there is some government oversight for fairness in price and distribution.

Isn't Amazon a US company and didn't the USA just hijack a shipment of PPE destined for Germany?

Dont some places have Plexiglas barrier/walls for drivers?
Needs to be like hauling livestock, the truck is up front with just a driver, people go in the livestock trailer.

Like Canada Post? Does Canada Post still own Purolator or have I been out of touch.
Afaik they are still part of CP. Trucks/planes are only half the distribution problem though. Amazon has the ordering and fulfilling component too. I'm not sure how capable CP is of getting in a truck and sending varying quantities of its contents to many recipients at different times. My suspicion is they are setup to be hyper efficient at one in one out.

This is the former Director of Foreign Disaster Assistance USAID with the Obama administration. Watch the video and you will be up to speed on what the Trump administration did to the pandemic response plan

It's also not rocket science - every business that operates in bricks and mortar + web was provisioned for the extra load or managed to expand capacity in realtime. No excuse for a $15b company that has been in the ecommerce game for 10 years. My guess is a techie was tapped to oversee the job and is relying on the old techie adage "good, fast, cheap" pick two. The marketing guys say "OK, good and fast", the techie replies "oh..., if you pick good you can't have fast".

No matter why it happened, someone's career will be on a ventilator in a few weeks.
