Colorado shooting

this is pretty messed up

An aspiring sportscaster who just barely avoided the Toronto Eaton Centre shooting in June has been identified as one of twelve people killed at an early morning massacre at a Denver movie theatre.

I always tell ppl count their luck. If it ain't gonna happen today, most likely some other day. Sometimes it just sneaks up on ya

My bad. One of the news articles that i read over my first cuppa this morning referred to an AK-47, as well as another "unidentified firearm".

regardless of the assault weapon of choice, going it alone with a concealed carry handgun against someone with an assault rifle, in a dark theatre with some sort of smoke or chemical bomb obscuring sighting lines and people (innocents) running around wouldn't be a real good choice to make - retreat would be the only sane option in that situation.

He had numerous guns in his arsenal plus he had tactical gear with gas mask.
Which brings the question, where did he get money to buy all this crap?

Student loans instead of buying a cbr 125; he got himself an arsenal.

Apparently he's been planning this for a bit now? If this happened in Ontario, i'd say he got the money from OSAP (Ontario Stereo Acquisition Plan)..

News reports indicate that he obtained all weapons in the past 6 months - 2 from Bass Pro, another 2 from another sporting goods store. The AR15 is a Chinese knockoff (Norinco?), which wouldn't be all that expensive, in the bigger picture of weapons prices in the US.

Dropping out of his graduate program last month, i'd say he's been 'repurposing' his resources, both mental and financial, to something else than school for some time..

Wack-a-doodle-do, he is, in any case.

It would be dirt-cheap because it's like 20 years old and from the period when Norinco AR quality was junk (now they're really good). The Yanks banned Chinese imports (can't even take one across the border for hunting or to shoot at a range) back in the early-mid 90's because Norinco reps were caught peddling their wares to gangbangers.

Norinco AR15s are really good now? cmon

Nothing they make is really good. Maybe its good value (if it works out of the box) but its never good. They're quite cheaply made and the machining/materials leave a lot to be desired. The Chinese just don't have what it takes.

I'm surprised he didn't kill himself.

The finish may not be the prettiest but they shoot well and are mechanically impeccable. Can't get a better deal for under $2000, but you can't attend shoots south of the border either. With that being said, I'm more partial to Red ;)

Alright my lack of knowledge....
Theres been shootings everywhere recently within the past few years, humans just love to kill too much, especially each others.

seems like all those American wars has desensitized the citizens into raging killers and some have spilled over into Canada. Don't see other countries where students just randomly spray their peers with bullets or randomly snipe people.

This killer was a doctoral student with a well off parents growing up in a well off neighbourhood. Just boggles my mind what made him pre-meditate all this.

Well I think we are looking at two completely different things here. These lone killers get there through mostly mental problems, sort of a nature over nurture issue. Gang bangers are organized groups that recruit kids set on the path through bad parenting, nurture over nature.

What bugs me here, the parents went on TV and the comment was, you got the right guy... Hopefully they did all they could to prevent this.

It is reported that this guy wired up his apartment to blow. They have cleared the entire area and still have not disarmed the bombs.
He set a trap for first responders to trip and blow themselves and possibly half the building up.

We will probably find out his feelings were hurt when the Joker/Heath Ledger died.
It's surprising the Police did not just kill him considering he was shooting at everyone and armed to the hilt.
He had over 3000 rounds for the AR15 and another 1000+ for some of the other guns.

Realistically, you could blow 1000 rounds in a single range day and you typically buy them by the 1000 in order to save money, so his arsenal isn't all that impressive. I know some serious sports shooters with over 100,000 rounds.

I did some pistol courses and we shot 3000 rounds in a weekend. People buy bulk ammo like that all the time... its nothing alarming.

As for the Norinco ARs... there are great alternatives for well under $2000. I don't like Chinese guns.. if they skimp on the fit and finish, then there's no reason to believe that the materials used are of high quality, nor that the gun will be all that reliable. You can get a Stag Arms for $1300.. that's a deal and a half.

You obviously have not handled a norinco in a while. They have up'd their game. I have several and all shoot and handle great. Even the finish is acceptable. They are not colts or S&W, but they shoot just as good. I get better groups with my norc 1911 9mm then I do with my colt. The parts are interchangable and the norc was less than half the price. (This means more ammo for me) ;) I have yet to have a fail to feed or fire with it. I cannot say the same about my colt. It is fuzzy about ammo. The norc is not. It will eat anything.

There is no way he had all that ammo on him. I purchase ammo by the case (1000 rounds) and it is not something you just walk around with. Unless it's in .22 calibre

Reports I have read state he ordered all his guns within the last 60 days. This would mean it is not a norinco. He aslo ordered a 100 round drum for the AR. I'm thinking this would have to be in .22 cal not the traditional .223 as I do not think you could fit 100 rounds of .223 in a single drum.

I brought up the Norinco brand name supposition.. in parenthesis. The news article simply quoted an ATF agent who indicated Chinese AR15 semi-auto knockoff. Sorry for the confusion.

No problem. There are a lot of cops that do not know much about firearms other than the one they carry. News report could also be mistaken. Who knows. Either way he killed 12 people and should be put to death.

Actually, you can.. Remember watching Sons of Guns - zombie gun build (I believe it was S03E08, look it up on youtube, the little .22 was cute) and IIRC they had a 100rd drum in poodleshooter, not .22LR for their AR-->M16 conversion (they built 2 guns - M16 platform for M&P use, .22LR for civvies

They wouldn't even know anything about the gun they're carrying in many cases. By the way, a Chinese firearm cannot be legally imported into the US. Since the Norinco reps selling to gangbangers incident, they put a total ban on Chinese firearms - couldn't take your Type-56 across the border to shoot at a range.
