Knowing how to shoot at targets in a controlled environment is very different from being in a dark and smoky theatre packed with people who are panicking and running around.
Leave the guns at home, or, like we do in Texas, in your glove compartment. Martial training will go much farther (and for most people in this situation would dictate a careful and speedy withdrawal to safety).

Even though Colorado has a CCW law, the theatre was a "gun free zone". Guess that didn't stop the bad guy from kicking in the door and spraying bullets.

what brings them there i dunno, what makes them develop that taste... tons of factors... but its not everybody who wants to shoot everybody on sight!
I highly suspect prescription drugs or even illegal substances of some chemical form.
When a white dude goes nuts like this, it always seems to be somewhat planned out, so theres a few screws loose in there somewhere.

My bad. One of the news articles that i read over my first cuppa this morning referred to an AK-47, as well as another "unidentified firearm".
regardless of the assault weapon of choice, going it alone with a concealed carry handgun against someone with an assault rifle, in a dark theatre with some sort of smoke or chemical bomb obscuring sighting lines and people (innocents) running around wouldn't be a real good choice to make - retreat would be the only sane option in that situation.
Quite possible, can't rule that one out yet, but he has no prior criminal record, so we'll give him the benefit of the doubt until we see if he has redneck parents.
Should we sanction the parents too? Maybe put them in jail as well for being such failures at parenting?
Ask an older, respectful person from the last generation that question, and they would probably say yes.
