Chain lube and cleaner???

I'm a new rider and cant wait for the season to start. I was wondering if anyone here has used dupont teflon wax or any of those other dupont products as a chain lube. I've read many reviews and people swear by it. If not, what products are you guys using?

I have no clue where to start with a cleaner. I assume the tirox stuff is great but keep in mind I dont want to have to remove my chain to clean it (ie. no kerosene soak)

Used toothbrush and wd40 to clean. Then use whatever lube you think is the best base on your research.

Kerosene in a spray bottle and toothbrush & shop rag to clean.

I use the Dupont chain saver (orange spray can) the old blue can changed formula.

If ur chain is an o ring chain DO NOT use wd-40. It will eat away at the rubber rings. Use kerosene and a brush, it's a lot cheaper than the stuff u buy from moto stores.

Last time i know petroleum eats rubber. And the fact that both kerosene and wd40 are petroleum base doesnt make a difference whether to use one or the other. In the end it will eat your rubber seals. One thing you need to know is the different grades of orings and what it can resist

I'll second this, except I use the Tirox brush (available from Rider's Choice)

I am lucky enough to have a few cans of the older Dupont (in the blue can). Stuff is wonderful. Over 35K on my original chain/sprockets. As far as cleaning them I don't do it too often and have been OK with WD 40. I just spray a bit on an old rag and wipe. I really don't care if my chain isn't shiny. Usually only clean the chain after riding in heavy rain or early in the season when there is still lots of sand and salt on the road.

WD40 is petroleum based and an oil that sticks and dries out your o-rings...Kerosene washes off immediately and doesn't stick around to dry **** out.

That's the difference as far as I understand.

I've heard good things about PJ1 chain lube and cleaner... any thoughts on this anyone?

Well, this officially kick starts 2014 - Our first Chain thread.

OP just FYI, the search function is a wonderful thing.

There are chain specific cleaners, why do people always try to find an alternative just for the sake of being different?

Because kerosene is the primary ingredient of many chain cleaners, it is recommended buy the manufactures of bikes & chains (see manual and/or installation instructions) and it is cheap.

No

These threads drive me nuts. I have over 45,000 km on the original chain & sprockets using only Wd-40. No other cleaner, lube or wax. Other than for tire changes the chain has only needed a slight adjustment twice. I use a liberal amount of the stuff weekly. It won't hurt the chain.

You can still buy the older formulation from Lowes in little plastic squeeze bottles. They're a nice size for carrying with you on trips.

OP, I use Tirox chain cleaner and Maxima chain wax.

Because it works 10 times better.

Gallon of kerosene for 2.99 at canadian tire and dupont teflon chain saver is all you'll ever need.

I don't even use a brush, just wipe it down with a rag and you can eat off my chain.

For those that want to spend 20$ for a bottle of "specialty" cleaner and lube go for it, its your money...

I also use Dupont Teflon Chain Saver... However I am on my last can, and do not believe it is available in Canada. If anyone has a hookup, please let me know. I am about to try to order a case in Michigan if I have to.

The yellow can? You can find this at Lowes also. I'm pretty sure I've seen it in Canadian Tire stores in the past as well.

I use this too and yes its at Lowes. Near the front with the tools. Not in season with other chain lubes for like chainsaws. If you ask them over there they dont know what it is lol.

Sorry but Lowe's discontinued it. That is where I used to get it. Then I found it at Canadian Tire last year in April and bought 3 cans of it. I have about 3/4's of a can left. Neither store has it now though. And by neither store has it now, I mean I am searching on Lowe's website and I see they have it listed again!!! (It was down last year around August) Thank sweet Jeebus. I am going to have to swing by and buy them out of stock before they discontinue it on me, again. :)
