I used to use those tirox chain brushes that wrap around the chain. The same ones I see on display at the bike shows. It ripped my o rings apart on my chain after a few cleanings with it. because its too aggressive. I just use a toothbrush and wd-40 sparingly unless I have a can of chain cleaner sitting around.

These threads drive me nuts. I have over 45,000 km on the original chain & sprockets using only Wd-40. No other cleaner, lube or wax. Other than for tire changes the chain has only needed a slight adjustment twice. I use a liberal amount of the stuff weekly. It won't hurt the chain.

No yourself.

Here's an interesting read about how WD40 soaked o-rings lose 20% of their strength. PJ1 soaked maintained their strength.

Use whatever you want though...you must know better.

As stated before, kerosene in a spray bottle to clean. As far as lube goes? Ok, may the laughter begin...I use bacon grease. No, I'm not kidding. Why pay ~$20 per bottle for another chemical? I have a squirt bottle in the fridge and when I fry up a pound on the weekend, I add the grease to the bottle. After I wash whatever bike is dirty I just throw the bottle in the nuker for 20 seconds then lube the chain. Works great and no o-ring damage. Only downfall is when I'm on my dirtbikes and the bears start chasing me cuz the bike smells like food!! Haha...to be honest though, when I rode through a time check in a late season dirt ride back in October, the timekeeper said he smelt French fries as I came up to him. Oh, I said...that's just my chain. I told him why and he said that's brilliant!

People worry way too much about cleaning and lube. A new chain and sprockets is around $300, not the end of the world if your technique is maybe 80% as good as the next guys. As long as you actually do something, you'll be fine.

I was actually going to buy this. Thanks for the warning.

Also thanks for the tip for buying kerosene for chain cleaner.

You can still buy the older formulation from Lowes in little plastic squeeze bottles. They're a nice size for carrying with you on trips.

Yep.

Sorry but Lowe's discontinued it. That is where I used to get it. Then I found it at Canadian Tire last year in April and bought 3 cans of it. I have about 3/4's of a can left. Neither store has it now though. And by neither store has it now, I mean I am searching on Lowe's website and I see they have it listed again!!! (It was down last year around August) Thank sweet Jeebus. I am going to have to swing by and buy them out of stock before they discontinue it on me, again. :)

Saw it at two GTA Lowes stores last week.

+1 for the DuPont Teflon. I don't even need to clean my chain. It is clean after a lube and wipe. even my dirtbike chain.

Those brushes are pieces of ****. My parents bought me one when I was a total rookie. I use wd40 and old ****** clothes to clean my chain now. But this DuPont stuff is truly king. So clean.

Thanks for all the input. I had purchased One of those cleaning brushes off ebay. Yesterday I went over to lowes and bought some kerosene and the dupont chain saver. They had about 12 in stock there (warden and eglinton)

Seems there is a little confusion over the DuPont lubricants.

Original DuPont formula in the middle, the one that webBikeWorld highly recommended but now discontinued. New formula in similar looking blue can on the right. Notice it no longer says "Dry, wax". Too runny so webBikeWorld dropped it off as a recommend. Chain saver product in yellow can on the left is what DuPont now recommends for motorcycle chains and claims the formula is similar to the discontinued formula. I'm using it and pretty happy with the results.

Actually, I do know better. I'm not soaking them in it, just spraying on and wiping off.

Wiping it off the outside? Or you individually take off links and wipe each o-ring dry? lol Pretty sure they soak in the WD-40 if you're spraying it on and it's getting on the o-rings. Like I said, do whatever you want though! My opinion won't sway you... :D Cheers!
