CanCon and Canadian Music

I'm sorry. I'll ask that they play some more Barenaked Ladies for you.

Don't get 'em all wadded because you listen to commercial made-for-airplay music and I called you on it.

There hasn't been one decent, music first demographics second artist come out of Canada in years. That's why you have no choice but to to look for decent new music coming out of the US.

Canadian Music is awesome. the point was.. do we need a rule to say we have to play a certain amount of it .

Does American have a version of canCon ? who are their small-time artists ?

who is Americas version of the Tragically hip. ( huge in canada, unheard of in most of america )

I (me personally) am saying that nothing worth wasting your breath over has come out of Canada in the past 10 years, so I have to look to the States for new music.

And as far as your Pantychrist goes, they're no Dayglo Abortions.

There are lots of bands that make a fantastic living in the states just from touring. You can't do that here in Canada as we don't have the population to support tons of small bands. In Canada even if you are selling gold you still aren't wealthy. You have to be massive in Canada or your nothing and working a 2nd job. Its sad but true.

The states doesn't have a version of CanCon but they do have a very strong sense of nationalism almost to the point of ignorance. They are indoctrinated from an early age to automatically regard anything American as the better choice.

I think a lot of CanCon is a fair way to counter act our own compulsive nature as Canadians to worship the U.S. (while trying to appear smart by badmouthing them). Canadians rarely recognize talent until they become big somewhere else and only then do we as Canadians acknowledge the talent that has always been there. I think it is all something deeply routed with living next to the 'cool kid' and trying to be like him while claiming we aren't.

My own CD collection is more than 35% Canadian content (by a lot) ... but I stopped paying attention to current music about 8 or 10 years ago.

Rob mentioned the Northern Pikes ... listening to that one in the background right now, thanks!

Saw them live in Gage Park, Brampton, on New Year's Eve in something like 2004. The things I do for money......

Pop quiz: What was the best selling album of the '90s?

You ought to know...

Personally I find it nauseating and terrible (and a little bit ironic, don't cha think?), but apparently 33,000,000 people disagreed with me.

Anyways, to FullMotoJacket's point, I think that The Arcade Fire are making some of the best rock music found anywhere at the moment. I'm proud to have seen them in '04 in Toronto when no one knew who they were.
