Do we really need CanCon ?

in case you dont know what it is, CanCon is esentially a set of rules that stipulates that at minimum, 35% of all content on AM and FM stations in Canada be Canadian in nature

this is why we are bombarded with Kim Mitchell and Bryan Adams songs lol

there are many Canadian bands that i like, that never seemed to make it big in the states. It seems easier for an american band to crossover into canada than it is a canadian Band to crossover into America.

Bands like Wide Mouth Mason, April Wine, Max Webster, Triumph, Nazareth, Headstones,Goddo, Pursuit of Happiness (the list is massive and i could be here all night) just never made it big in the states, yet here in canada, they are legends.

sure, there are a few bands that Break it big, but in the grand scheme of things most do not.

Ever wonder if there are bands in the States that are huge that we dont even know about ?

Like David Wilcox for example. I dont know anyone that hasnt seen him at least once. who's the American version of Wilcox ?

bordertowns know about the tragically Hip, they can fill any show in canada at any venue.

they have problems filling a local bar in places like memphis, or colorado.. how Odd is that ?

So, do we need cancon ? no. We love our canadian music and i think stations would play it anyways, becasue its good.

But the USA should have it. lol teach those guys some good music.

Kim Mitchell Songs kinda Suck.

when he sang with Max Webster, they were way better


Thorogood is big here. He packs the house everytime he plays in Canada

The Canadian music scene has been on an incredible run in the last 10 years. So many amazing artists and groups... The Arcade Fire, Broken Social Scene, Stars, Caribou, The New Pornographers, Death From Above, The Constantines, Shad, Sam Roberts, The Trews, K-OS (not a huge personal fan, but he's better than the average pop artist), Sarah Harmer, City and Colour and AlexisOnFire...

I listen to classic rock stations too, and I admit it sucks having to put up with Alannah Miles and Nickelback and Big Wreck.

On the other hand, Canada's music scene is something pretty special and the CanCon laws don't hurt.
 
The tea party is a super band that got no recognition

Tradigically hip is big here but no one nows them in the usa

I think Our two biggest bands known world wide is rush and neil young.
 
I don't have a problem with the rule of playing a % of Canadian music, but I think that a lot of radio stations get lazy and play the same **** over 'n over again just to fulfill that obligation. Like on Q107, they'll play the same damn Rush and Kim Mitchell songs.......
 
If we didn't have Can Con rules, we'd have virtually no music of our own. The airwaves would be dominated by American music, to our detriment. There are some stupid things about Can Con though. Showing Canadian COMMERCIALS counts as Canadian content, which is why cable companies do those channel swaps with American channels, when the same show is on both. Then there's the Quebec version of Can Con, that results in their own Star System. People can make a pretty good living, while performing solely in French, and be complete unknowns in the rest of the country.

I have mixed feelings about CanCon.

While I like to see Canadian artists get a boost sometimes I think it goes too far. 102.1 had their top new rock songs of all time countdown a while back. I forget how many songs it was.. 200.. 300?? A lot anyhow... but I digress. Billy Talent had 6 songs in the countdown, Oasis only had two (Champagne Supernova and Wonderwall). 6 Billy Talent songs on their countdown but Don't Look Back In Anger and What's The Story Morning Glory were not on it. I'm not a huge Oasis fan but come on.

Don't piss on my shoes and tell me it's raining. **** you, that's what. Other bands with 6 songs on the countdown were Greenday and Pearl Jam. I don't mind Billy Talent but they arent THAT good and I'm not THAT stupid.
 
The Edge does some of the best work working within Can Con and providing new music.

Most recently bands like The Sheepdogs (yes, I know about the Rolling Stone thing) and USS wouldn't get ANY airtime anywhere if it wasn't for Cancon. They were also one of the first stations to play the Trews and the Salads or Ill Scarlet to name a few.

If more stations took that approach, we'd probably get more variety.

Commercials do not count towards CanCon. What you are seeing is called simulcasting, and it is done entirely for the money (boosts impressions of in-market advertising).
 
Can Con is a joke. 35% works out to 1 in 3 songs from 6am-11:59pm. That's about 63-66 songs in one broadcast day that are total ****. We just don't have that many decent artists to fill such a quote anymore. Factor in that music is now free with file sharing and you have fewer new artists recording music as there are no incentives for recording and releasing new music.

The only possible fix to this mess is convert CBC 1 to play 100% Can Con for 12-35 audience, CBC 2 should be playing 100% Can Con for 35-65. Leave the commercial radio stations to their own devices so they can turn a better profit.

I think that they're considered American now. Isn't that what happens after you do a TV show theme and one of your members goes to an American jail, for drug charges?

Don't know why Canadians still hang on to Neil Young, the man hasn't lived in this country since 1966.

CanCon is hardly an issue anymore since there are so many international radio stations available on the internet.
