Canada Post - Huge losses

Wow - 55 managers that probably did nothing more than walk around with empty clipboards. How big is the .... 60,000+?

Mission accomplished, CPC is saved!
Apparently at least 2500 managers that do not touch mail in cpc. Even laying off 550 is insufficient to save it.

Give it some time. Those positions will be recreated and refilled.

I laugh at the feds continuing to bang the "repayable loan" drum. If you lend unsecured money to a bankrupt company with no plan for a path to recovery, whatever you pretend, the money is gone forever. Should have let it die without burning more.

A trump pick. You're surprised?
With unions involved, even the boss has little ability to correct that big of a hole. Like Canada, USPS should probably be allowed to die and USPS part deux with no legal ties to USPS spins up to provide the level of service required without the legacy waste. If they want to be pricks about it, let USPS go bankrupt to avoid severance payments.

The question ought to be why does it cost 1.25 to deliver a letter? I don’t think Canada Post problems stem from undercharging.

Price and volume are somewhat elastic, so raising prices because of a cost issue is a slippery slope- it kicks the loss problem down the road, but not for very long. Look at their package business… 10 years ago they were excellent value, the dominant market force, and profitable.

10 years ago the started jacking package prices instead of fixing the letter mail cost problem. Lost 1/2 their market share and enabled completion which has now built out their networks. Getting that share back is nearly impossible.

When lettermail crossed a dollar, big volume mailers invested heavily into email conversion. $1 was the breaking point. Switching the average bank customer to email saves $55/year in postage. In 2015 less than 10% chose email, banks offered incentives and drove that to >80%. For a bank with 10m consumer customers, that’s a lot of money gained by the bank, lost by CPC.

CPC needs to tackle cost problems or the discussion on monstrous losses will be back soon.
Late to the party here…

Do you realize that most European countries literally charge double what CP does?

Take Germany for example - you can fit the country into Ontario almost FIVE TIMES. Consider that our country is what, 5500km coast to coast, now add in transportation costs…

Now, add in the CP is MANDATED BY LAW to deliver to EVERY SINGLE ADDRESS IN CANADA.

Couriers simple Nope out to that and refuse to deliver to remote areas, as CP does it. Their costs would be astronomical and they simply can’t afford to do that, unless they charge 300-400% of what CP does.

Hopefully you can understand the issue now.

Getting back on track seems easy to me. Finish the home delivery conversion, then rightsize the workforce using fair industry standards for productivity.
You don’t understand how people wiht home delivery fight against Community Mail Box conversion.

It’s a luxury that basically costs them nothing.

People are loath to give up luxuries.

That all makes sense but increasing prices to cover the loss will quickly spiral. At $5 a letter, there won't be many to deliver. CP is mandated to deliver to every address but I haven't seen even a whisper of level of service required. It is entirely reasonable that remote destinations get infrequent service if that is more cost effective.

Then they can pay for the luxury. Nobody wants to give it up until it costs them money. At that point, the vast majority will let it go. No CP mandate requires delivery to your door. We have a crap ton of elections right now. Run it as a referendum on the ballot. "Do you want to keep mail delivery to the door? Postal codes that keep this service will have $200 added to their yearly tax bill for each resident".
