Call to legalize lane splitting/filtering

Don't think that will ever happen unless they change the licensing system. I can say in hindsight that if I started on a 600 and went on a group ride with no one telling me "ride at your own pace cause we will go fast through corners", I would have crashed very hard.

The licensing system in Ontario is criminally bad. We could fix almost everything with better trained riders and drivers. This current system of gotta-pulse, getta licence is a joke.

I've seen plenty of riders with a M license that shouldn't be on the road

It's rediculas how many bad drivers/riders I see every day on my commute. This is also the reason why I won't commute on my bike, it's not worth the risk or the stress.

Not sure if this was posted in this thread, worth a look if you want a comprehensive look at the topic of lane splitting and filtering. Video was shot in California.

They have some good points but when they said "control", as far as Ontario is concerned, it goes right out the window. Lane splitting is asking for trouble here. For that reason, I wouldn't support it until there was some sort of driver education reform.

Unless you're good at it and comfortable on your motorcycle, then "driver reform" doesn't matter. As the one gentleman said, it's our responsibility to be safe, and avoid the bad drivers, not their responsibility to reform to suit a minority group of people (us).

Splitting in Ontario is fine, but it did require some extra caution to be safe in the event that someone not used to seeing it got ****** off and tried to be the police.

Back in Cali now, probably won't be checking this board again unless I plan another visit home, but I hope you guys are able to get filtering legalized at least, if not lane sharing while moving.

When I was riding through Southern California a couple of weeks ago I rode in the high occupancy lane and some how I felt "bad." What I didn't like about lane splitters in California is that they take the liberty of sharing your lane while filtering. This was some times unnerving BTW, I never split lanes while California because it didn't feel safe with my wide saddlebags. Drivers there did seem unfazed by lane spitters, but overall I found California drivers aggressive .

All u need is one car to make a lane change without signal and ur sliding on their roof. That or a door or a turn.. No thanks mate.

Lane splitting in an area that its an expected norm is one thing but in the GTA where the drivers can't drive and not expecting u there. No thanks

a few years ago, a user on here "4getmoney" or something like that, took the shoulder of the DVP for a very short distance to make it to the next off ramp from wherever he was and was hit with HTA 172, stunt driving

I did this once and some ******* intentionally swerved into the shoulder to block me which nearly caused a crash.

And In cali a disturbingly high percentage of drivers surveyed in one study said they would intentionally do this if they saw a motorcycle lane splitting despite knowing that it's legal.

It's not that I wouldn't lane split if it were made legal, I'd just be careful and only do it when reasonable.

I know it applies to cyclists but I thought riding a motorcycle in the parked car lane (sharing with the stopped cars) is legal but if anything happens to you (including door prize), it's your own fault. I'm probably wrong because it seems silly that cyclists would have different rules than motorcyclists but there are some differences (like we can't use the bike lane at all) and I've always read sharing with the parked cars is kind of a gamble....

This is legal. I've asked a few cops and they said that since the cars are parked they are technically not "occupying" the lane as a running vehicle. Mind you, you have to be careful of pedestrians trying to cross the street, cyclists, door prizes, and the stupid jealous cagers that think you're doing something illegal and want to "teach you a lesson".

Lane sharing and filtering are different from lane splitting, only lane sharing/ filtering are legal in Cali.
Its always illegal to lane split.

Let's take this thread back on track.

How does OP suggest we help with the process?

Remember just because something is legal to do, doesn't mean you have to do it. Don't feel safe doing it? Then do not do it.

I have been filtering since 1965 but I have never been given a ticket or stopped for it!

I assume that most car drivers are on their cell phones so I use extra caution.

Often I go right to the head of the line at the stop light.

Use discretion to avoid road rage incidents that make everyone a loser -- it takes self-discipline for self survival.

Always be extra courteous on a motorcycle - you are very very vulnerable

I would like to lane filter at red lights or in dead stop traffic to get ahead of long line ups, but some of these ****ing drivers tend to block me as if they are the law.
Even if cops don't care about bikers lane split/filter, some of these ******* drivers will.

Once you are caught onto filtering, there is really no going back. The WHOLE world safely practices it, yet some think that Canada and (some parts of USA) must be the right one on this by not allowing..

Makes me lawl.
