Brampton? Where to live or not to live

Holy thread revival!
And I will only go to Brampton to visit family. And when I did live there, over 20 years ago, I wouldn't dream of leaving the car unlocked.

I am with Joe, and also noted thread revival is by the new members 1st post.

North Brampton = Rosedale village... Gated community.
Nuff said,

I grew up there, left in the late 80's , Rutherford/Queen area
occasionally have reason to go back and can't believe what it's become

My friend worked in Brampton a year ago and used to take the bus. One day, while waiting for the bus at Rutherford and Queen, a local decided he had to #2. Dropped his pants and let it go right outside of the bus stop. Welcome to Brampton.

Edit: He just pulled his pants right back up as toilet paper was not readily available

I have no reason whatsoever to doubt the legitimacy of this story given the setting.

I moved to Brampton 25 years ago because it was the closest place that was the cheapest, to where I worked at the time. Anything further east was out of the question - too expensive. And, as a motorcyclist, it's not far to get out of town. First place was in a townhouse because that's all I could afford. (Archdekin area)

I moved within Brampton 14 years ago, to the Mount Pleasant area (the nearby GO station came afterward). Detached house. Neighbors on both sides are great. I got 10 years out of being able to ride to the end of my street and that was the end of the built up area (< 1 km). That's changing now, but it's still not far to get out of the city.

Housing prices have now gone so crazy that moving anywhere that isn't 200 km away (and not Muskoka!) is unthinkable. That's probably not happening until I retire.

Very sad what happened to it. If you have to live there, Valleywood or that area is about the only place left. In fact, go north to Caledon or Boston Mills. Brampton is like some kind of foreign country. The change since the 1980s is incredible.

I did a 5 year stint back in 01 to 06 before moving back to London.

Couldn't afford Mississauga. Needed to stay west of GTA for family in London. Work was at Islington and 401.

Found a semi D near Williams Parkway and Main.

Wasn't bad. Street was quiet but, never felt like home.

A neighbour would tell me about the early days. Tell me I should move to Georgetown.

It's a weird city. Small downtown with urban sprawl in all directions.

I don't miss it.

My neighbour moved to Crystal Beach to get away from it all and I moved to St Catharines.

Working from home, I can commute when needed in the GTA.

Unless I'm forced to go, Brampton won't be on my places to live.

My brother and sister both bought in Peel Village. That's still another nice pocket. And my bro's BIL just bought on Dr's Row.
But from what I've seen, and Brian also stated, Brampton is no longer the affordable option that it once was.
My biggest gripe is the traffic. Everything seems so congested. Even though the slogan in the 90s was "all roads lead to Brampton" I find it takes too long to get anywhere.
Mind you, before I bought up here, I was THIS close to buying a 1400 sq ft bungaloft near Bovaird and Mcglaughlin for $175k. Things could have been very different for me right now.
Fwiw, there are a few other places I would not buy: Scarborough, anywhere Toronto proper, and Malton.
If I had $$ I would probably go Oakville.
But at the end of the day, life, like where you live, is what you make it. And like Brian P said, just hop on your bike and you can go anywhere. It is, after all, a #FreedomMachine

Been in Brampton area for 35 years or so... in a lot of different homes.

The old chez Marie restaurant used to be our house...

Peel Village, that's where all the upper middle class lived when I lived in Brampton
kids went to Centennial HS, yuppy spawn

I lived in a hood where dads had their name on their shirt, and went to Central Peel
tough school, but we had one hell of a basketball team

I live just off Hanover at Queen and Dixie. I've been here for the past 15 years and as someone stated, with the price of houses I don't think I'll get out anytime soon. My wife and I had just married and had our first kid (shotgun wedding! Lol) while living in an apartment above a store downtown Georgetown.

Moving to Brampton was the only way we could afford anything but an apartment, so we found ourselves a freehold townhouse.

Coming from only two small towns in 20 years of living, Brampton seemed like a big city when I moved here in 2002, lol. It certainly has a bad rep, but I really don't see how any other city could be any better. All cities are varying degrees of crap, imo. And small towns aren't all they're cracked up to be (trust me and my criminal friends as teenagers).

Anyway, I can stand on my front step and name almost everyone that I can see. It's probably about 20 houses. We can, and have, gone to borrow a cup of sugar or whatever from many of them. In a pinch we have about 6 of them we could get to watch our kids if needed. Also, for whatever it's worth we're white born and breed Canadians, while most of our neighbours are from India, South America, Europe, Asia, and the Caribbean. That is what I truly love about living here. Watching my kids play with all these different cultures and not being racist little ******** like I was growing up.

I think this place, like any place, is what you make it.

Where's "Dr's row"?

Where's "Dr's row"?
I'm not sure if that is the official name, but we always referred to it as such. Quite obviously because back then, only Drs (or similar) could afford to live there.
Been a while since I have been in that area but facing hwy 10 outskirts of peel village opposite the nice parkette.
Tbh I remember thw houses as being awesome. But that was 30 years ago, and the fact that we were hanging out at a hotties house and my 15 year old hormones were raging could have influenced my view.

That is the key. It is bad when you are the one kid that is visually different. Integration (not just substitution which often happens) makes everything better. My wife grew up in Scarberia and felt really uncomfortable when she visited my parents in Cobourg and everyone was white. It's easy for kids to learn that everyone is equal if they have no reason to think otherwise.

Also, when people come from around the world, many bring delicious food that you have never heard of nor got the chance to try :)

I went to high school (North Park) with the Crawford boys, if that rings any bells.
