Bike with Less Character

My dash is a little different than yours. I have a factory accessory bar above my speedo.

The ball mount at the end of the bolt that secures the accessory bar is not stock. I replaced the factory bolt with the ball mount. I wanted the GPS and its mounting arm to be as little as possible.

I am thinking of replacing the phone mount and possibly GPS with a 5 inch (or ideally 7 inch) Android Auto screen from AliE as mentioned on another thread.

@sburns
Which model did you end up getting?
Did it come with any "features" i.e. heated grips, cruise control, riding modes?
I see no centre strand in the first picture.

However here is my set up.

I do recommend adding a high output USB 3.0 Charger on the opposite side of the stock one.
The factory one has only one port and is the "standard/slow" type. The one I installed also displays the battery voltage as a bonus. My speedo/dash also have battery voltage reading from factory.

Wow thanks for this, yes your setup is much different. I thought the vStroms were all the same except for engine, bags etc. Now I see this it's quite a bit different. Mine doesn't have centre stand or heated grips.
I'll have to post a pic of the dash. I have a aux cigerette port, but it's on the left below dash not on the side. I wonder if some of this I can adapt, because I like this setup.

Is that on switched power?
Currently it is. I am running a Fuzeblock so changing it to constant power is a matter of moving the fuse.
Regardless of switched or constant, it still requires the little button on the actually charger to be pressed in order for it to display the voltage or charge mobile device.
I will be replacing this with one that does NOT need the little power button to be pressed for it to turn on.

I found that when returning to the bike after a short stop or more so after fuel up I would forget to press the small power button once the ignition was on again. Then I would need to fight with it while already riding and gloves on. If the USB cable was plugged in, it was a bigger PITA as the button is on the far end.

Since I will be leaving it on switched power, it can come on automatically with the ignition, regardless if I can charging something or not.

With modern engine management computers, they normally just pull timing if lower octane fuel is used. You lose a few hp but don't hurt anything. Some manufacturers use premium to get higher hp numbers for marketing but only require regular. Tiny text lets you know that regular is safe but may affect performance.
The compression ratios are almost the same. 11.2:1 for the 650; 11.3:1 for the 1000.

My aux cigarette port is under the passenger seat. I could have swapped it out for another USB charger but I figured it would be good to have one for my needs or possibly another riders needs. My emergency air pump runs off of a cigarette plug. (I think I can also swap it out for an SAE connector)

If you only have the cig. port on your dash, more of a reason to add the direct USB charger to the other side. You would just need to drill out a plastic hole on the other side.
You can tap it into the current cig. port wiring (which is switched power) or run a new power cable from the battery or fuse block.

BTW.

You should also have a spare pigtail with a connector under your fairing (mine is on the right) for factory heated grips.

I added Koso Apollo heated grips to mine as the factory ones were much more $$$$.

Amazing. Ok so do you ever meet up for the burger nights? I'm really curious to see your bike now.

I think you are out numbered.

But you (2 of you) can take GTABallers.com
mimico owns a ducati, he's one of us now.

His time to become a baller has run out.
He has owned his current bike for more than a month without selling it or thinking of a getting different one in the same amount of time.

Burger nights don't like west end guys. lol

I have been to 2 so far that were closer to me. Ill see if I can get out to the one tomorrow.

High compression necessitates high octane. 1000 is only very slightly into that territory.

@sburns
A few more pics of the USB charger install.

View of connectors inside the dash. I ran separate wiring from my fuzeblock.

Maniac complaining they are all west of Yonge and West enders complaining it's not west end friendly.

Y'all are terrible.

Maybe next time we have them alternate each week. And maybe make the 400 as the dividing middle.

I'm not complaining.
It more of my available time (or lack of) that is the issue and not the location

I believe I'm fairly good with the rotation, some times it's a back to back but I generally try to keep it moving.

As handy as a c-stand is the loss of one can be overcome with a stick of the right length. I made a more "appropriate" stick by cutting off one of the aluminum legs from an old bath transfer stool that was scrapped at the Restore. The legs have a button and series of holes that allows you to adjust the length. (quite the baller "stick") I turned a little wooden plug for the cut end but a rubber cane tip would work just as well.
For chain lubing on a trips (other than solo) one guys pulls the bike over on the side stand (raising the rear wheel) while the other spins and lubes.

As expected, manual and sticker have the same info.

As far as I know we don't have 90 in Canada (or at least Ontario) so 91 it is.
Having said that I think some guys on the Vstrom Forum are running regular on their 1000s and are not reporting any issues.
First gen DL1000's ran on regular. 2014+DL1000 want 90+.

In Newfoundland and Labrador only 87 octane was available in a lot of places. On my 2015 DL1000 it ran fine on regular but I made effort to avoid using higher throttle settings at lower revs so as to avoid detonation.
