Bike with Less Character

I could use some help with chain maintenance, never had to before and something the dealer pointed out which should be done after it rains, and dirty conditions. Recommended this Ipone products. Any tips etc would be helpful.
Chain maintenance is like an oil thread. Everybody has an opinion and most are at least partially correct. For me, if I am piling on miles, I spray the chain at the end of the day (from the inside out to try to drive out contaminants) while it's warm and wipe it off. Watch for sticking links while lubing (they don't happen often but if you see one, your chain is on its way out). Check slack but that doesn't need adjusted often. Don't ever tighten the chain too much or you can wear it out in a ride. If I am just doing short trips, I lube the chain every few weeks.

I think @MacDoc went with one of the magic lifetime oilless chains on his Oz bike.

450kms on a tank is good.
I got mine to 310 this weekend and filled up 15 liters. I'm sure I can probably stretch it to 350kms.
I need to try to run it dry one day with my 2 litre emergency can in tow.

That's good (interesting) that the accessory bar was included. I guess a nice surprise.

The other school of thought about chain is never cleaning it but actually just lubing it.

Russel Day Long seats are the chit. They cost a first born but I haven't heard of a bad review of them. They custom make them to your weight. Look them up

Decided to create a new thread for chain maintenance.

How do we not have an official GTAM popcorn sponsor yet?

Hey guys bit of an update.

Completed the first service. So the break in is almost complete. I can't rev past 7k right now, but honest I haven't needed to.

Took a longsh ride over to Prince Edward yesterday. Prince Edward point Bird Observatory - no birds around!

Yes side cases finally arrived.

Some things I need to address.
- wind - have a windshield in mind hopefully that fixes it
- seat - it sucks, after soo many hours I'm beat
- gps - had to redirect a few times because of construction and was kinda lost.
- more lighting for at night - I had so much light on the HD I never used the high beams, hi beams on this doesn't do much.

Mileage is awesome, I can get 450 k a tank. Well I think it's good compared to the HD, not sure about other vStroms.

Good info provided so far.

For windshield, not sure if they make Madstad brackets for your year of bike, and if they do, they are nice for adjusting the screen on the move. If you are expereinceing helemt buffeting at speeds, then consider swapping out those square mirrors for something more streamlined, like they use on the Versys and Kawi's and adding on mirror extenders - these two things elimate all the wind off the mirrors hitting the helmet.

Corbin also makes good seats. Seat comfort seems to vary a fair bit, because I knowI dislike the Russell for moving around on the seat and other dislike the Corbin's because they find them too hard. Very few like the stock V-Strom seats for long days.

For additional lighting, consider either swapping out your bulbs to some LED's, (if they aren't already) and/or also adding two lower fog or driving lights that make a triangle of light for improved oncoming visibility.

You almost never need to rev past 7k rpm. Most of us do because it's fun and also give better access to the powerband. Whencrusingaorund, I prefer to be between 5k-6k rpms. When in the corners, I prefer to be 6k-11k rpm.

For some fuel range context - on my old V-Stroms, I maxed out at 525km off one tank. That was riding at 90km/hr in top gear from Mississauaga to Tobermory and then on Manitoulin Island. I never exceeded 5k rpm on that ride. It was the first and last time that I ever eclipsed 400km on one tank. Normally I would get around 350-375km/tank and that is with the rpm's running between 5k-11k for everyday and long distance riding.

Your bike looks great!

@sburns
I quick look at Stromtrooper and lots of guys are recommending the OEM centre stand for hassle free fit and finish.
I checked the parts fiche for 2 dealers and they do not list the price for the OEM centre stand. Strange.

Having said that there are also a lot of good opinion about the Cosmo Accessories from Greece. They make lots of stuff for the VStroms and other bikes.
Their centre stand is well priced. I have also read that shipping is quick and you may or may not get hit with import fees.
I almost ordered my crash plate from them but found something very similar on Amazon.ca for similar price.

Center Stand

There is also this. Good price, and you know that if the fit isn't great, Amazon will take it back no questions asked.

Good this is that your model is the same as the models from 2017 onwards so there should be more parts and accesssoreis available on the used resale market. If you are patient and look around im sure you will find something soon enbough.

Wow. $490.
Yes, OEM accessories are not cheap. I least I found that to be the case.

I would just roll the dice with the Amazon one. Looks like there is a $10 coupon available for it.
But act quick, there are only 2 left in stock.

Update: First mod installed @oioioi, @85K100

This should help with wind, and minimize getting hit in helmet with bugs, seriously it was all the time.

Old windshield

New shield

Might be able to test this out tomorrow.

Also picked up iPone white chain lub so I can see what the heck I'm spraying. Well see how that goes.

Changing those mirrors will also help move air away from you compared to the Suzuki ones. Try the Kawasaki mirrors used on the Versys or Ninja's - they are much better at moving wind away from the rider and they are cheaper to replace if you drop the bike. And adding mirror extenders will do even more:

Kawasaki mirrors used
Not disputing your theory about Kawi mirrors but I rode my buddies Versys 650 this weekend for about 25 min on the Freeway.
Felt a lot of wind coming onto my forearms. So much that it would bother me.
Bike was outfitted with a Givi Airflow.

I have stock Suzuki Mirros on my DL1050 and the Givi Airflow system and I feel no buffering at the helmet or arms.

Could also be that they improved the airflow with the newer styling beyond the 1st or 2nd gens. And to be fair, I hated the look of those square blocks and wanted something a bit more streamlined to the bikes lines.

Thanks, hey is that a corbin seat on this bike? I saw someone post on Stormtroppers a photo of that seat and I like the look of it. That's also something I will want to change out. I need a bit of lower back support and comfort.

You need one of these stickers to go fast when you’re doing Dakar stuff.

Yes it's a Corbin. Their seats work well for me but not for everyone, so see if you can try one out for a long ride before you commit to buying one new. If you find one used at a good price they are very easy to resell. I bought that one for my old Strom for $250 and it's was incredible. Liked that specific style so much I bought one new for the current bike and it cost around $900, but I love it.

I’m not a Corbin fan, have one on my ST, it’s ok but nothing special.

I really like the Saddleman Adv seat I have now for all day comfort, you can’t beat it. The only downside is the microfibre suede covering the gel humps doesn’t shed water very well.

Wetass riding isn’t comfortable

Before or after I do the stuff?
Before. My wife makes them, she did the one in the pic to match my DR750. I’ll get her to cut some in black and yellow if you want some.
