Bike Accidents

LOL, that's the one I've used to suck a few people in. Afterwards "you know this road, don't you"? Uh, duh!

On a side note, Snake Road was my winter tire testing track.

No crashes on roads except in university riding in snow where it was sort of a given and a different era of bikes.

Several near misses.

One my fault - came over a hill accelerating and there was a left turning car in my lane waaaay too close to stop tho I did get on the binders hard. Knew I was not going to stop in time and fortunately there was a small gap to the right and I got through on pavement....glad that driver decided on a compact and to hug the centre lane turning left.
I could see the ongoing highway from my acceleration point, I could not see the dip the car was hiding in.
Take away, beware crests and dips even if you can see the road beyond things can be hiding that bite.

Another at stoplight Base Line and Trafalgar. heading westbound. Stopped at the light behind another vehicle, light turms and I can see the vehicles are stopped going north south.
Car ahead of me goes through.
I accelerate and then hammer the brakes on.!!!!
Idjit to my left decided, from a stop at a red light, to then run the red light. WTF!!!!
He got stopped, I got stopped, he mouthed "sorry"
Take away - cagers are capable of anything you can imagine in terms of stupid around bikes.

Similar - 4 way stop in Ottawa, busy day , I have right of way to turn left so am in the intersection as the oncoming car drives through, the car behind him decides he will just go through as well....almost dropped it - luckily dry flat pavement....and the guy just buggered off.
Now the Burgman 650 is not exactly small and both headlights are on all the time - turn signal was on and the bike angled for the turn....he saw me - he just decided to be a dickhead - I could hear his wife yell at him as he went by.
Take away ...sometimes cagers do in on purpose. Intersections especially on a busy day or rush hour are just plain avoidance zones if possible.
This is also a case where good grippy boots kept me upright as I could plant it firmly and keep the bike up ( 600 lbs + due to gear at the time ) - watch out for painted white lines - slippery for bike and boots.

LOL, that's the one I've used to suck a few people in. Afterwards "you know this road, don't you"? Uh, duh!

I gave my then sister in law the ride of her life on that corner before it got repaved.
Too fast with a passenger and it was bumpy at the time ......I could feel the rear tire hopping steady around but ran out of corner and kept the bike up. The front stayed rock solid on line on the RD400. ( brillant brakes for the time )

She never knew ....came back rosy cheeked and all giddy. from an "exciting" ride..glad she was a feather weight.

Take away...careful with passengers even on roads you know and don't show off with them on

Total thread jack so sorry. I rented a room on Union St. for 6 months in 1981. Guy across the street had an old Ford pickup truck. When I drive by there now it appears to still be in service. Always get a chuckle from that. Again, so sorry.

edit, actually not thread jack. I crashed three times that year. Waterdown Rd left hander going south at the train bridge. Hit neutral, couldn't recover in time, ran straight off. Just missed the sign. Today there is a wall, 1981 had grass.

Another time on the ramp of the 403 to hit Waterdown Rd. That stuffed the bike under the guardrail and v shaped the back wheel.

And on Plains Rd in the rain in front of the car rental place heading west almost at Waterdown Rd. The rental people drove me home.

Takeaway? Try to be more carefuller.

Only once on the street.About 33 years ago in Brampton on my way to work on a dual sport XL250 Honda. It was too hot to wear my bellstaff jacket (DUH!),so i bungied it on top of the rear fender. The bungie broke in the middle of a left turn and went into the rear sprocket locking the rear wheel.Bent swingarm, clutch lever broken and a bunch of other stuff.really nasty raspberries on my left hip, shoulder and forearm.Lesson learned.Buy tougher bungies and never use it for your jacket.

It was a very long ride home back to Milton with the headlite aimed at the moon (3-11 shift) wanting to turn left with a bent swingarm.

You where hit from behind, not good at all, hope you weren't badly injured.
I don't think it matters who hit you, rather than the person didn't see you or couldn't stop in time or was distracted on cell. etc.
My Bike got totaled, my back will never be the same but it wasn't that bad

It matters to me who hit me

1. Snake Rd - Going into a corner too fast, .

^ Regarding item 1 ... Bit by corner three??

.
lol first thing i thought - So many people get bitten by that corner, when i used to take people through there, I would always give specific instructions on it.

1. Just got my M2 and my first bike (cruiser), within the first week my ******* friend who drove a ninja asked if I wanted to go out for a spin. I followed him as he warmed up my tires and took me on ramps. I went my own pace but still tried to kind of keep up. After he was done ramping he took me to some side roads which had a ton of gravel and he was still gunning it, i took a turn too fast and skidded out on some gravel. I've been weary of who I ride with ever since.

2.My second season riding there were freak rain storms for a couple of weeks, where it would rain like crazy for 5 or 15 minutes at a time and then just stop, it'd be sunny like nothing ever happened. I got caught in one of those freak storms and couldn't see more than 5 feet in front of me. I braked at a red, and pretty fat too but it didn't make a difference, my rear end fishtailed really badly and I skidded on the wet pavement into a pontiac sunfire. I was only wearing a t-shirt and jeans, but the pavement was so wet I didn't lose any skin.

Rode my first little 2 stroke dirt bike everywhere when I was young. Including right across the front college gardens. Came off it twice, both times on sheer ice that bulletproof me thought I could handle....unfortunately my brakes, tires and ice all obeyed the laws of physics and I defied laws of common sense so off I came and shredded my clothes both times. One time I was in a hurry to get to an exam so I sat in the exam with blood dripping from my knee onto the floor through tattered pants.

lesson learned: I always watch the weather when it starts getting cooler, I look out for shaded areas after a frost as they don't thaw out, and I don't ride if there's ice laying on the ground.

That decreasing-radius downhill left sucks a lot of people into hitting that guardrail. Stay wwaaaaaayyyyy wide on the entrance into that corner and don't turn in the rest of the way until you can see the part that tightens. Staying wide also improves your visibility through the corner and keeps you further from oncoming traffic (that you can't see) in case they go over the center line.

That's the one. lol I was just like....****kkk. It was too late, was fine for the first part of the turn then it tightened up and as soon as I hit the shoulder I went down, luckily I wasn't going too fast by the time I hit and was able to ride away from it. I've been back there since... had to, made it around this time. It sure does help knowing what's coming! I seem to like learning the hard way.

I did not know the road. lol but I know it now! Intimately. :D

I see what you did there! lol

3 seasons and 45.000km later, 3 drops for scooter 0 for bikes(2) and rider.

1st drop for scooter, just got my m2 and brand new scooter. Ride it home from Toronto(50km) no problem and parked it. Side stand was not out completely, down she went. Damage: bent rear break lever and rider pride.

2nd drop for scooter, was heading west on an extended tour. Stopped at Tobermory for the night and get on ferry next morning. It was raining and motel owner was nice enough to let me park scooter inside a shed. Next morning, dropped scooter due to OVER PACKED(top heavy) and confined space. Damage: Same break lever, bent handle bar slightly and windscreen.

Last drop(I hope) in a Honda car dealership parking lot. Parking lot was wet with puddles and rotten leafs(Oct.). I was going 10km max and rear tire gave out in the puddle. Scooter dropped but I was on my feet. Damage: same break lever(this time it broke off when I tried to bend it back) and rider ego.

About one year after I started riding I low sided on gravel.

I knew there was gravel in different corners but I just got on the bike 2 mins earlier leaving the Laurentians and my head wasn't completely into it yet. I was crawling down the straights and not slowing down enough for the corners. I knew I had no feel for what the right speed was supposed to be. It was a weird feeling of not being tuned in. Next time I'll know that warning sign and I'll stop to focus before riding.

Anyways, 40km/h slide in full gear, front fairing bent and pants torn at knee, quick duct tape fix. Next day was my first track day at FAST!

i'm suprised some of you are still riding after some serious injuries..
I doubt I would continue if I had one of those experiences.

About 3 years ago i was out riding with a friend late at night. I was leading the way and we came up to a red light where we were going to make a right. I saw a car that had the right of way and stopped, he was looking at the car for a couple seconds too long and didn't stop. Went right into the back of me. With the force he hit me my bike went across the intersection, my leg got stuck on the peg and i got pulled along for the ride. Meanwhile the car kept coming and i though he was going to run me over. To this day i have a problem with my knee.

Best part of this, at first he said he'd pay for the damage to my bike. After a couple days however he told me it was my fault for stopping at a red light and that i should have gone lol

Luckily the bike i was riding at the moment was a 05 gsxr that had the exhaust on the side. His wheel went in between my swingarm and pipe. Had i been on a cbr or any other bike with undertail exhaust i'd probably have no leg.

The next day i couldn't get out of bed i was in so much pain, i never experienced anything like this even after being in a car wreck. Pavement is seriously hard :D

You guys aren't still friends are you?

Parking lot out of all places. Took the bike out in November (one last time before winterizing) to meet with my fam for dinner got in a parking lot and some guy going in the opposite direction just cut me off. Broke my collarbone and bike was written off (economical writeoff). Going to take this season off as my shoulder feels eff up. Sure gonna miss my bike. Crazy part is when I was selling my parts, the only guy that was reasonable and didn't low ball me turned out that he bought my bike in an auction....small world. Lucky for him cause I still had the cards and stuff from that bike so I gave it to him. Had he low balled me I'd probably would've just ignored him, but now he saved hundreds :D

I know that this thread is for the street but I haven't been down on the street yet, so you get the two times I ended up in the hospital on the dirt.
1) I was about 7 or 8 years old on my '74 Honda Z50. Thought that I was the next Evil Kinievel with 2 bricks and a barn board. All day I hit my 'ramp' going a little bit faster each time, until I ended up going over the handle bars and tearing my knee open. I was in runners, shorts and a tee shirt and a helmet that was just a plastic shell and rock hard yellow foam - no liner at all. I was the coolest kid in the second grade when I showed my friends my stitches from my 'motorcycle' accident. lol

2) about 5 or 6 years ago I was tearing through a field on my Yamaha ttr230 and was just about to get on the brakes for a 90 degree turn. I had no idea that the ankle high grass was hiding a huge puddle so the second I touched the front brake the bars went full lock and over the bars I went. Luckily I was wearing proper gear that time because I landed head and shoulder first on a field stone. Separated shoulder and mild concussion. My should popped back in just by wiggling it around a bit but it was my throttle arm and was incredibly painful riding home like that. Had to buy a new MX helmet but was otherwise okay.

Here's hoping for continued luck on the roads!!

Your friend told me. Wish all is well

It takes a certain kind of person to stare death in the face, go through the pain of recovery and get back on two wheels. Here are a few examples over the years:

sexxxychicgs500 - I just met her serendipitously over the weekend in Dundas and she's back on 2 and has a few bikes now.

100% props and respect to the people above. I don't mean to put a downer on this thread -- we all know the risks of riding. But the positive message here is no matter how bad things get, you never know how much you'll recover without trying.
