big poppas purely hypothetical window shopping thread

Anybody else here contemplating something new?

Replacement, or addition to the stable?

I'm thinking about a proper dirtbike.

Wr is a great dual sport, but overweight, and underpowered. Spec sheets still put it at the top of its class (although its discontinued).

Double bathroom scale weighed it the other day. 304lbs full of fuel.

Proper dirtbike is approx. 250lbs.

May keep the wr in supermoto trim, and sell the gsxr600.

Or buy a proper dirtbike and keep everything (storage is an issue.)

Contemplating a new KTM 300 but probably not.

I may be considering a VSTROM 650….or a Versys… maybe…
Actually ride what you have.

Come out for some Thursday rides at Steeles and Financial.

Swap bikes with those willing.

Find out what you actually like.

Strom and versys are boring. They eat miles, and pretty well do everything, but are... meh. Good for some to ride something that just blends into the background and allows you to enjoy the scenery and the ride. Everyone has their own flavor.

He can also try to see if he can snag some demos from the aformentioned dealers.
finding your "soulbike" is hard, expensive and requires trial and error, but is possible imo.

There's no perfect bike.

Start with a platform that lights your hair on fire (whatever that may be), and mod as necessary until it suits your needs.

That, and the perfect bike is "multiple bikes", each to fulfill a need.

There is no Unicorn.

The sound of my Ducati, the reliability of my CB500X, and the carrying capacity of the Burgman….

Sounds like a tough sell. Ducati could use a windshield and then it’d be much better.

Not sure I follow, has your ducati been unreliable somehow?

It sounds to me like you're after a ducati ADV bike

No. Not yet anyway lol. But everyone keeps scaring me.

Thread derail over lol. But to your regular baller programming…

No plans on changing bikes for me.
Customized this one too much to let it go. Still need to sort out a comfort seat. If I could change anything about it, it would be to make it go on some sort of diet and loose some weight. I'm not a big guy and sometimes wish the VStrom could be a little lighter.

However, in the future bikes to consider might be the AT or Tracer 9 or Ural. lol

@mimico_polak
My neighbor has a Versys 650. He likes it but I heard him mumbling about switching to a bigger bike. I'll let him know you are in the market. lol
Not sure how my fellow Strom Troopers will feel about me giving you leads on a Versys. Knowing that a VStrom 650 would be your better choice.

I recently rode a 2012 ktm 2 stroke 250 with a 300 kit. Made my hands feel like they were vibrating off... and wheelies far too easily in the first three gears.

The 300 exc got the balancer shaft in 2017. Much smoother. Tried a 2023 ktm 300 tpi, and a husky tc 250i. Both very well balanced.

I wouldn't do a first year tpi bike. Friend had issues. First year of anything is iffy.

Have you tried a newer one?

" and wheelies far too easily in the first three gears."

To quote Ralph Wiggum, "That's unpossible!"

I feel the same way about the FI 2 strokes as you. I definitely want carb'd one, but I've read of many people with carb issues on newer ones.

I'm used to 80's/90's 2 strokes so vibration isn't a concern, nor is electric start.

drop by studio? Adam gives test rides. He was great to deal with as well when buying a tuono.

do tell, another monster? Multi? or something more sportier?

You got more restraint than me thats for sure.
Adam is great. I met him this summer when I was V85TT curious. I'd definitely go back there.

As for more restraint than you...no offence but a gasoline fire has more restraint than you! 😁

eclectic choices.

Also a polok on a russian bike?!

mamma mia, what is the world coming to?

Sounds to me like you need a yz250x.

Carbed. Proven reliable powerplant. The x has a slightly softer power delivery, and better gearing for trails.

No electric start.

Suspension is set far too hard from factory, but easily remedied.

Basic, and works.

Balancer shaft, and electric start for me (if I wind up on a 2 stroke).

May even go 4 stroke, and go to a 350 exc or exc-f.

Not looking forward to 8-10 hour oil changes...

Tracer was the bike I wanted before the VStrom. But I was mainly looking at the Tracer 900. Once I rode one and realized the positioning of the pegs (rider to passenger) was too close, it was wiped off the list. Tracer 9 has a different set up but was above my budget.
VStrom checked all the boxes, budget, look appeal, purpose and I have always wanted one. The v-twin growl (with my exhaust) does sound nice but it gets tiring on long rides.

As for the RUS, I put those differences aside when it comes to bikes. Only bikes.
