Art Students...

It's just a logo for crying out loud. By default a lot of people are going to hate it anyway. It's all subjective. An art gallery will buy a smear for a million dollars if it's got the right whoopdeedoo attached to it. JHC on a stick.

Seriously guys. Dundas Square. Fight to the death.

I'm really starting to hate this contest. Can I just not show up?

I'm just killing time here until I need to go to the airport to pick someone up...

If a contractor comes to my house to bid on work such as fixing the roof, installing a furnace, adding a room, paving the driveway or even building the whole house, their estimate may or maynot be free, but any designs they submit would remain under their ownership unless PURCHASED by me. The government taking ownership of any IP not paid for is just wrong.

Contractor tendering a bid: Here is my proposal for the job I'm going to do for you. It took me time and effort to put the proposal together, a proposal for further work I am going to do for you if I win the bid. The bid is solely for you to gauge my suitability as a contractor, and otherwise has little value to you as the client.

Contractor doing speculative work (i.e. graphic designer entering a design competition): Here is my proposal for your requirements. If you select my proposal, I get paid, but I will not be further involved. I have done all of the work required for the project, whether it gets selected or not.

white people problems...

Nope. There's a black guy in the bottom row of photos in the HuffingtonPost piece. Granted, he's in the minority.

Naw that's a white guy who they painted black to show off. They are art students afterall.

Oh. Is that why he's wearing a hat? They couldn't find enough pubic hair to do everything?

The level of derp here is extremely high. These students must have been part of the everybody wins sports league when they were growing up.

Wow, you don't have a clue..:rolleyes::rolleyes:

A hard-to-break-into industry where companies get free work from unpaid "interns" or grads struggling to get into. And you're surprised when there is backlash from people (whom already feel cheated) when the government tries to get work for free under the pretence of being a competition?

:rolleyes::rolleyes::rolleyes:

With or without a clue betcha he has a job though, and one that he didn't have to "win" through an unpaid contest.

I'm impressed by art, but at the end of the day I'd question it as a choice of careers. Doesn't seem like many make a lot of money, and huge stresses come because of it.

My hat is off to those who follow their passion, including art, in the face of dire economic outlook. You only live once. I respect those who live it on their own terms.

But to what degree? I think art students have been struggling since the beginning of time. Most of the "famous" ones didn't make hand over fist until they were long gone. Then the "owners" reaped the rewards. Did I read somewhere that it was once an Olympic sport? Like a painting competition...

I'm not sure what I would do if I had a choice. WWYD?

If, and that's a huge if, you have the talent and the passion, go for it. Wayne Gretski said: "You miss 100% of the shots you don't take."

I'm not just talking the talk; with a child at OCAD, I'm walking the walk.
