Are Unions done?

Well if you are taking out Financial sector and energy and natural resources, then that is pretty much a denial of the reality of the Canadian economy. I won't even mention Canadian real estate, but the companies that come ty mind are:

BCE, Brookfield, Onex, Celestica, Imax.

thats off the top of my head.

I recognize Imax. :-)

I forgot about Magna. RIM was is still competetive, just to a lesser degree.

When I think revolutionary, industry leaders....companies like GE, Ford, Caterpillar, Apple, Harley Davidson, Boeing, Microsoft pop into my head. Not to many Canadian companies compete with those besides Rim and Bombardier.

Was the Canadian Govt right in supporting ElectroMotive (American comp.) So far the biggest Canadian bailouts have been to American GM and Chrysler and yet they let Nortel go bankrupt, will they support RIM?

Two big companies still in London that come to mind are General Dynamics, and 3M.......both American.

I am not sure why HD is on that list. Its iconic but in terms of actually making money and being a company that actually matters... They don't.

I think you should probably look a bit further into Celestica.

Nortel has executive wrongdoing in it. thats a completely different ballpark.

As far as GM and Chrysler, the auto industry is completely different than tech.
A government may be able to give you some money and a tax break, but it can't do anythign if the reason you are going down is because you are getting out innovated at every corner.

There is no way I will support the Canadian govt throwing money at a Company with billions in revenue but can't save itself. There is nothing about RiM that has to do with financial crisis or factors beyond their control. Their product is getting destroyed, thats all.

IIRC General Dynamics and EMD were originally both GM Diesel until they got split off a few years back. Maybe part of the bailouts? The two plants are side by side and possibly share some utiliies. I was in at GD last week and they are alive and kicking but EMD was a ghost town with a token strike / protest group at the barrels.

You will ruffle some feathers around here with talk like that! GDLS-C (the C is for Canada) operates independantly from GDLS. As far as the Land Systems division is concerned, London is the flagship facility. The people that work on and operate the LAVs can tell within a few minutes if the vehicle was built in London or in Sterling Heights, MI.

Only the first sentence you wrote is correct. It was over 10 years ago.

The military operations were sold to General Dynamics and the rail operations were sold to EMD/Progress Rail. Neither received any type of bail out money.

I wasn't sure if GM had to dispose of assets for financial reasons / conditions but I was too busy on a service call to pry any further. One underling indicated that at the time of break up some employees had options of who they wanted a paycheque from. Some made the wrong choice.

While all seems good at GD I'll stand by my observation that EMD looked like a ghost town.
