Anyone here a cyclist?

Why did you switch from spd pedals?

I have been using the MTB spd (or spd compatible) for a good 25 years, not much to complain about on my side. To me the sound of the click in is a sound of summer...
My SPD were 25 years old with many many miles on them. With my injury, I needed flats to ride for a while as I needed to avoid extra stress through my ankle. I got a good deal on the times so I figured they could be the flats I needed and a chance to see why so many people liked them once I was slightly more healed. I really hated riding in normal shoes, they are far too squishy so I switched to bike shoes with cleats but needed to release my bad leg with my arm. Not ideal.

You need a pair of dedicated MTB platform shoes. I like Five Tens myself*. Super grippy and good shank support. Then again, I use to race DH and freeride (MSA/Bromont) in Vans, so......

*If you're ordering online they run small. 1/2 to a full size, depending on your feet.

Not the solution for major injuries but a total game changer for me this last year has been Turmeric/Curcumin. I have a huge number of old sports injuries, specially knees when it comes to cycling. I came across the recommendation to try it in an over 50 cycling forum. Figured I would try it (supplements), I will say it has worked very well for me. I rarely even use my knee braces anymore, research is mixed but it worked for me.

Also helps of course with all my other joint injuries, shoulders, elbows.....

I switched to SPD SH-56 for road and MTB. They are easier to get out of, considerably safer and I never released inadvertently. I used to occasionally hit the ground due to pushing my track stands too much with SH-51 cleats.

Ok, there were enough recommendations for 5 10's that I stopped by Petes yesterday to grab a pair. Haven't had a chance to ride in them yet. Update to follow eventually. They weren't cheap but I was going to reinjure myself clipped into the atacs.

Out of curiosity, how was the sizing compared to your normal size?

I have narrow flat feet and shoe buying sucks. I have shoes that fit me between 9.5 and 10.5. Size 9.5 5.10's were too short (toe actually touching end of shoe). 10 and 10.5 both fit fine.

I just checked my spd cleats and I had been running sh-56.

Pulled my old Stumpjumper Elite off the rack for a tune up and found the Fox Float 120RL fork adjusters are seized. Any tips to freeing them up?

I have not come across that problem yet. I would be tempted to try progressively cycling the fork a bunch of times and seeing if that helps. Are they air or spring?

Other than that hopefully the current settings still work for you--ok joking a bit on that one.

Fixed. Google search showed it's common and a little pen oil and some force with a wrench will usually fix it (or break the rod if not careful). A few days for oil to sink in and then a light touch with the wrench freed it up.

Anyone here that can help hubby and I get a more upright sitting position on our bicycles? We're looking at one of these three options:

  1. adjustable compact stem EVO Adjustable Compact Stem
  2. new handlebars (we have flat ones right now) no idea what to get?
TIA!
What's the bike? Post some pics of bike and bars/stem. How's the reach for him? Height of bars matters but so does how far forward they are. What stem length and angle does he have now? Can it be flipped to give him rise instead of drop (probably not but worth looking)?

Obviously your first adjustable stem linked reduces reach as it increases height. Having both variables tied together isn't ideal but is done on many bikes.

I guess a stem extender could work but that adds all sorts of ugly forces to the stem. Probably ok to cruise around but I personally wouldn't want it.

They're both Giant ATXs and the stem length according to this picture is 70mm (I have the S with 27.5" tires and he has a M)...no idea on the angle though...

I emailed Gears which is where he bought them so hoping to hear back from them in the next day or two...

Sometimes shops will swap stems for you for a minimal charge. They have a bin of used stems and they do a really quick bike fit to see what configuration you are looking for (eg sit on bike and hold hands where you want them) and then swap in a stem they have that is closer than the one you have. Yours goes into the bin as that may be what the next person wants.

EDIT:
If his bike is setup like the one on the website, you can flip the stem to raise the bars about an inch. Stem is 15 degrees and on the website they used the 15 down.

Yes, first step is to make sure the stem is up not down (just flips over). And of course that the stem does not have any spacers above it. Easy and free.

You have to be careful of a new stem that is longer as it will increase reach with the extra length (like the adjustable one). On the stem there are also a bunch of different handlebar diameters so you need to make sure to get the right one (specs say yours in 25.4mm (1 inch), the adjustable one is 31.8 but comes with shims for 25.4). My personal approach assuming flipping the current one does not solve the problem would be a 35° X 70mm (give or take) stem--but it really depends on how much new height is needed.

Depending on how much extra height is added, it may also require new cables etc. Usually there is tonnes of range for MTBs but there will be some limit--just depends on how it was originally cabled.

so Gears emailed back and said the stem extender would be better over the adjustable one...

I double checked and there's no spacer above above it and the stem is oriented facing up (not down)...and yes, I found that it is a 15 degree x 70 mm ...

What is everyone using for a cycling app these days? Anything decent that is free?

I was using the Samsung Health one that comes on the phone but after the last update it no longer tracks anything useful. I am looking for something that tracks distance, route (via phone GPS) and some minor stats like average speed, max speed, climbing vertical. Just for my tracking.
