Anyone get stopped in Oakville today at the spot check for exhausts ?

I was just pulling into Oakville from Burlinton on Lakeshore by the beer store . A guy approached me at the lights . He told me up ahead police were pulling bikes over and cheking their mufflers . Mine are EPA legal but aftermarket . I didn't feel like wasting and hour in discussion . So I went around the the spot check .
Meanwhile there were 3 shootings in Toronto yesterday. You would think these idiots would set-up gun-searching spotchecks instead of checking for loud mufflers. You can't violate the rights of an illegal gun criminal but you can do it with law-abiding citizens for their mufflers.

Nice way to waste my tax dollars.

Do you ever have anything intelligent to say ?

Yeah. I do. Don't worry about my ears for now, go solve real crimes. I would appreciate that more than anything else.

There's no $500 fines for having an illegal firearm.

One has nothing to do with the other, but you knew that already didn't you ?
Being a law abiding, non-illegal gun carrying citizen with a totally legal motorcycle that you operate in a responsible manner means what happens in Oakville, public relations exercise or other, shouldn't matter to you and has absolutely nothing to do with what gangstahs are doing to each other in T.O.

Do they only do this on Lakeshore? Getting a ticket for your exhaust is probably the only thing worse than than crawling along Lakeshore through Port Credit, Oakville downtown, and the Burlington beach areas during a nice weekend when all the cars are out.

Halton Regional police ran this same program last summer from June 10 to Oct. 31. It covered all vehicles but in Oakville town staff did the m/c sound testing to the SAE standard pushed by the MMIC to Oakville about 9 years ago.
Halton police laid 1420 charges last year, mostly to cars and trucks. 574 were for no/improper muffler, 396 for unnecessary noise, 12 for racing/stunt driving. The other 438 charges were things like, vehicle defects, moving violations, license violations, license plate violations, insurance violations, no emission controls.
The Oakville town staff sound tested 56 motorcycles and issued 17 tickets for noise in excess of the bylaw.
The test being used is the SAE J2825 roadside test developed and promoted by the motorcycle distributors in this country and the US and is more lenient than the 1980 m/c makers test.
Some testing of vintage and classic motorcycles done in 2010 by the CVMG showed that even motorcycles made as far back as the 1930’s had no trouble passing the SAE J2825 test.
AFJ
Also, all of the municipalities I have seen base their by-law on J2825 but do not reference it nor require compliance with the testing procedure therein. Therefore in court, you are fighting using the conditions outlined in the by-law and bringing up J2825 shouldnt help you (eg ambient, nearby reflective surfaces etc). By-law is down and dirty with a sound level and location.

Weapon of choice for the DR-Z crowd.

My latest Bandit acquistion came with a loud slip- on can that I plan to replace soon however it comes down to how to use the bike in busy areas.

We ride the escarpment area regularly and I do think about the local residents when the loud pipes come around in droves on weekends. I can't imagine how irritating it must be to them.

During the week a lot of the local residents do morning walks along the narrow country roads. When I see them up ahead, I slow down and pull in the clutch to idle the bike past them. Some actually acknowledge this and give an appreciating nod.

A old work Bud invited me to his place on McGiven road off Cedar Springs Road on Wednesday morning. He will have a lot to say so I will be taking my Gold Wing... (y)

The law is not heavy handed , nor is it unrequired. And the debate will never go away, as the " loud valves save lives " crowd will not be swayed. They NEED that really loud exhaust, or no exhaust. Maybe didn't get enough hugs as a small child.

I think it is more on how the loud exhaust is being used or abused more so than simply having a loud exhaust. (Hopefully that makes sense)
My bike is loud, I'll admit it and I like it. But, not at the expense of those around me. As for "Loud pipes save lives" that is a load of BS today.

I would certainly prefer to see more efforts into reducing dangerous/distracted driving/drivers vs. noise complaints but I can see how one is much easier to deal with vs. the other.

As much as I am also concerned about dangerous/distracted driving, that puts the people at risk that are within feet of the driver. The ridiculously loud pipes quite literally can have a measurable health effect on every person within kilometres when ridden at night (WHO health guidelines for intermittent events that cause sleep disturbance). So one persons desire to be loud can negatively impact the health of millions of toronto residents (it's a cumulative impact, I'm not saying every bike flyby directly results in a death).

As for the how you use it bit, I partly agree. If it is ridiculously loud, there is no place in southern ontario you could use it and not effect at least dozens of people. The test as implemented by municipalities is at idle only. If you can't pass that, pulling in your clutch and idling past isn't as friendly as you think it is. It is just less bad than staying on it.

Of course, we can only try to fix stupid people doing stupid things.

Good. Loud pipes are annoying and annoy neighbourhoods and make people hate motorcycles. I have an aftermarket exhaust that sounds great but nowhere near the illegal level.

I have aftermarket slip ons.
I have no clue if they are "nowhere" near anything.
How did you find out your exhaust noise level is "nowhere near the illegal level"??

If you're near barrie sometime I can measure them for you. Otherwise, based on previous testing, if they are normal aftermarket exhaust (mufflers ~18" long) I expect a pass. If they are GP exhaust or straight pipe, expect to fail.

Anybody been on a group ride in position behind a bike with straight pipes, especially if you are without ear plugs and wearing a half-helmet?

You would think that person would ride in the back of the pack.

No on every account. A dbag with straight pipes revving the piss out of his harley while duck walking through a crowd at the edenvale airshow did make a bunch of kids cry. Stupid self-centred bleeper.
