Anyone get stopped in Oakville today at the spot check for exhausts ?

Yep, For a few years i rode without earplugs. Now i will not leave the house without them.

But earplugs should be to dampen wind noise, not your own motorcycle.

Anyone who needs earplugs to dampen the noise of their own bike in order to be able to ride comfortably (well, beyond the nearest Tim Hortons) needs to get a brain.

Again, **** that ****. Pardon my French.

I have aftermarket V&H's pipes on my bike, but holy hell, they have a tasteful tone, and I don't drive like a jacktard in residential areas.

I concurn with others - people with these pipes are their own worst enemies and the reason for this result, end stop.
Theyā€™re tasteful to YOU. Doesnā€™t mean that everyone else may agree.

Overall I agree though, many exhaust systems have a good tone, and itā€™s the riders that are at fault. No need to be screaming in 1st gear in a residential area.

Have a neighbour with a big blue, and loud Harley....guy leaves at 4:30am...BUT...he fires it up, all dressed and sitting on the bike. From firing it up to gone down the street...maybe 10 seconds. He doesnā€™t rumble and let it sit while he gears up. Good neighbour.

Good way of looking at things. I've said it from my 1st post. A "loud" exhaust with a idiot rider/driver is the cause of most of the noise issues.
My bike is loud, I've spoken with all the people that live around me and funny enough not one has even heard me. I've left my house at all hours of day/night and not a single complaint and I speak with them on almost a daily basis and openly ask if I'm an issue. But that is how I roll, I know this does not apply to everyone.

I get it, but my pipes would only get into the level where someone might be offended when Iā€™m merging on the 401 or something.

Around town and under moderate acceleration theyā€™re not much louder than stock Harley pipes, which if anyone has ever heard them (as they seem to have about a 90 second lifespan beyond the point the bike is sold) are actually pretty quiet.

And Iā€™m ā€œthatā€ Neighbour who if I go out super early or come home super late goes out of my way to make it as quiet as possible. Iā€™ll roll the bike to the street, will start it and be in first gear and rolling in a few secondsā€¦.and then virtually lug it down the street until Iā€™m out of the residential area.

Performance and weight savings
Slip on is virtually no performance change, just noise. Weight savings is a reasonable comment but you can get most of the weight savings in a system that still provides reasonable noise reduction. Let's be honest, the vast majority of exhaust systems are installed because people want to change how their bike sounds or want to make their bike louder and weight and power are happy side effects.

Please donā€™t take my comment as criticism @PrivatePilot . Just saying what we justify to ourselves as reasonable may not jive with your neighbours/locals.

My wife hated the WRX as when I started it the thing was so loud(stock) it would wake the kids.

Now between the Volt, 500X and the quiet garage door she canā€™t tell when I drive up or away. I am considering a diff exhaust on the X but not sure itā€™s worth a 2kg saving or $.

I 100% agree with this. If you want real weight savings on your motorcycle. Go on a diet.
300 pounds guy on 500cc bike will gain nothing by switching exhausts..

The subies are pretty bad. Guy a block away has a WRX and something else (debadged sti?) you can hear them whenever they start. A guy three blocks away has a subie with huge exhaust tips and what sure sounds like not much muffling. He idles his car in the driveway for minutes before leaving every time. You can hear that car inside our house too even when it is idling.

You have a point...

But this thing is heavy!

That doesnā€™t look like anything off a bike. šŸ˜‰

As for obnoxiously loud cars, thatā€™s another story. The ā€œcrackle tuneā€ nonsense that seems to be the new hotness in the ricer world is trash.

Get off my lawn.

Snip.....

I bet he doesn't show the same respect to people once he is outside the neighbourhood. Only respects people who know who he is....

How about adding stickers?

Very possible....but all I can comment on is what I see and hear. Outside of that who knows.

It seems the bike is stock as itā€™s not overly loud. And I donā€™t know him well so who knows if heā€™s an ass outside of the street.

I think the "Z900" is the tip off. You don't see these because they're buried down underneath.

Hmm, ok. Perspective of the picture and the pipe size makes it look like something off a car though.

But in the grand scheme of a road driven motorcycle, a 4 pound weight loss is going to accomplish what, exactly?

On a track where the performance gains and advantages come in small slivers, I get it I guess, sure, but then weā€™re off topic so far as street operated motorcycles and their noise levels.

Track bikes have more restriction on sound level than street bikes do in most cases. It will be interesting to see how the new Oro track addresses this as adding a new track within kilometres of existing housing creates an uproar (for good reason).

That looks like that piece is 4.3 kg. It's not that hard to get 10+ pounds out of an exhaust. That particular piece is mounted very low so I doubt you would feel much difference but if it also has high mount mufflers that should make the bike feel lighter if changed.

I remember having a similar conversation with a friend who was trying to justify spending mega $$$ on a new racing bicycle to save a few ounces.
I suggested just not having the extra bagel at breakfast...
