Any scotch lovers out there?

I second the Macallan. Talisker is also a favourite of mine.

I plan on touring the Glenora this summer when I am out there with the group from DOCC.
Are you going to Mosport for the DOCC event? If so,be sure to look me up.Stephanie,Mike and i will be doing a bit of sampling while the band entertains us.
And don't just tour the distillery.Stay in one of their chalets for a night. You won't regret it!

I'm bookmarking this thread and making a list. :D

I like Cognac (Hennesy and Remy Martin, with Courvosier a not too distant second), and I've just started trying a few whiskeys, but only found one of those I liked a little.

I like sherrys, and most flavoured liquoers like Amaretto. So based on that, what would ya'll recommend as a first scotch?

See my list from the previous page.. Bruichladdich 10yo is a great smooth, yet strong scotch. My personal favourite is the Bowmore 17yo Mariner. Stay away from craptastic Johhny Walkers and the like, blends just don't do it, unless you add some soda.

I to, am a fan of the brown liquors, Courvosier vsop is pretty good, have a bottle of that at home.

I will be dropping in to Mosport for a couple hours (it's close to my house) and will look you up. I'm sure I will be able to spot the "Muffin" from a distance.

I will look into the Chalets. Thanks.

Are you on crack? You should be beaten for merely suggesting mixing a 25 year old single malt with anything. Including ice!! Peasant. ;)

+100... Mixing is for chumps.. If you are going to mix any scotch, mix craptastic Johnny Walker, or just throw it out..;)

Same with any liquor ... don't use the good stuff if you're going to mix ...

Beefeater tastes exactly the same as Bombay or Tanqueray 10 when you put tonic in it ...

Why waste the money? Blends and cheap stuff is for mixing ... the good stuff should be appreciated on it's own ... or a max of two ice cubes if that is your thing

How dare any of you suggest to put scotch on the rocks.... thats blasphemy at its finest right there!

It's not for everyone (because of the smell and mossy taste), but after a really long day, I love a Lagavulin with 2 ice cubes...

Mossy-taste? It's like sucking on a peat bog. In a good way. :D

I'll second that..........all it takes is a teardrop of water to release the flavour...........anything else you should be William Wallace'd.

Sherry cask Glenmorangie..........the sixteen men of Tain were inspired when they came up with that.
I like the Glenmorangie "cellar13", It can only be bought in the Tain store, my dad has to make regular trips north for me.........he doesn't mind though cause he gets to sample..........he brings my mum to drive him home of course.

i'll go with Bruichladdich 10yo...with ONE ice cube! :D
I must admit (only with the crappy stuff) Rusty Nails are a fav of mine, Scotch & Drambuie...

Henessey is also on the top 3 list...that stays on its own...i have to get my hands on a bottle of the "Private Reserve"...

Lagavulin or Dalwhinnie for me...neat.

In fact, I think I'll pour myself a wee bit right now.

We went out to Allen's, which is a small place on The Danforth that has a dining room and a semi-decent menu, but they also have a 2-pg long (8.5x14 page) in extra-small type, all single malt and blended scotch and whisky bottles list. QUITE IMPRESSIVE.

Between the 3 of us we managed to drink in excess of $202 CDN in single malt scotch samples (all shared) - and a good time was had by all. Here's what we found:

• Laphroig 14yr ultra smooth & earthy, like spring time

• Ardbeg 10yr spicy & citrus, great young drink for winter

• Lagavulin Double Mature extra smokey, sharp @ first & smooth after

• Bunnahabahain 10yr NCF very sharp; like rubbing alcohol

• Oban 14yr very sweet caramel with unique warming feel after 30sec

• Craganmore Double Mature 22yr rum cake with vanilla icing sugar

• Glenmorangie Burgundy very interesting sensation of licorice and fragrant holiday sugars with an odd tickle

• Mortloch coffee and berries but very harsh finish

• Highland Park 14yr no special fragrance but very potent pepper aftertaste hits unexpectedly

• Glenkinchie 1986 most horrible drink ever, avoid at all cost

• Glendronach 15yr Sherry very smooth but not special

• Bowmore 15yr most smokey assault on the sense I have ever experienced, not only smokey but spicey!

.. of all these, the Craganmore exceeds all expectations, by far - but for me, a very close runner-up is a bottle of Lagavulin Double Mature. Both of these bottles will very soon find a home in my collection case: one for the incredible smoothness and fragrance (not to mention the fantastic finish) and the other for the robust smokey flavour that will go well with a pipe or cigar as well as with a great piece of steak!

+1 Dalwhinnie for an everyday scotch and lagavulin or better for other times.

Instead of ice use some frozen stainless steel balls in your scotch if you must keep it chilled.
