Any Photographers (Pro/Am) here?

My wife and I are... She's semi-professional (does paid shoots on the side) and I'm an avid amateur... Both Canon, I'm using an EOS-R mirrorless; she's in a 6dMk2.

I mostly do landscape/architecture, and some product shots; she's more versatile, does websites, portraits, and boudoir - but we agree 100% on no weddings, ever!

What about everyone else here - what do you shoot, what do you like to shoot??

About 35 yrs ago I did weddings and product photography with Hassleblad + 120 film , and Contax /Leica 35mm . After about wedding number 15 I was out. Never again. I did photo my own wedding with a hand held remote .

I was very average , I now use an older Nikon D90 around home and a panasonic Lumix for travel . Fits in a pocket .
To be honest my I phone is about all I actually need now .

I miss it a bit , the creativity, but I have enough hobbies

I was talking to a guy that did a wedding video that was supposed to be paid for by the bride's father. When the video didn't give the dad enough face time he refused to pay, forgetting he had signed a complete release.

The photographer re-edited the video and did a collection of the stupid stuff the dad did and posted it on FaceBook.

We know a few people that shoot weddings... the money can be decent, but the headaches can be epic.

Since this is something between a hobby and a side hustle, We decided the money isn't worth the hassle...

Hey a photography thread without any photos? Crazy

I do events. I'm all canon. Mostly rebels with upgraded lenses, flash etc. Have a Canon 5DmrkIII with all the good lenses. Before COVID I was part of some Photography groups, and we would do a fair bit of street photography around Toronto. I enjoy street photography quite a bit. Also like going around and see things, location, architecure, historic site when I travel. It's a great way to explore places and spending time looking at it instead of just visiting. I also shoot with a canon point a shoot and iphone. It's amazing what the camera phones can do!

Hey enough talk, lets take a look!

I used to shoot quite a bit. Mostly just documenting life with phones these days. Have a canon body with some decent glass (24-105, 70-200f2.8is) and a bunch of lighting (a few alien bees with associated modifiers and some other stuff). Bought the camera for a trip to africa, planned to sell the good glass upon my return and live with cheaper glass. I couldn't do it. Even looking at thumbnails you could see the magic. When I used to shoot weddings, I would borrow nice primes and additional bodies from a buddy. I have been contemplating selling off all the expensive stuff. I don't use it enough to justify that much money being tied up. For trips we use some lumix dmc-ts cameras. Marginal images but so convenient as they are waterproof and have gps so photos are geotagged.

I'll dig out some pictures later. Most of what I shot were personal so they won't go up but there are some concert and wildlife shots that aren't bad (imo).

Serious amateur with a decent eye for layout and no other skills.
Shooting MFT so I can have a 2 lb package with 350 mm equ
Wildlife and travels. Splurged on a Leica 400/800 eq worth more than the rest of my kit together but can get this at 1/2 KM.

and at Yellow Water.

Downside with MFT is poor in low light and slow for bird flight etc.
Looking for something perhaps with a bigger sensor or newer tech - however giving up $3-4k of lenses doesn't make sense either.
The 20 mm prime is pretty fast and does "okay" in lower light but the 45/175 just sucks in low light tho the GX7 MUCH better than the GX1I use riding. I do love the hilighting for focus on the Gx7 - much easier for birding.

In the right light the Gx1 /45/175 does fine and I can pull over, take a few shots without hassle as it all fits in my shirt pockets or the tank bag.

Been getting more into atmospheric and reflection shots in the last while. The light in Katherine Gorge was superb and really did not know how nice until I got home and looked on the big screen.

The big key is the cameras are small enough and light enough that they are always at hand.

with the big Lumix it looks a bit silly

But considering you get 90% of the performance of $20k version for 10% of the price....hey I'm happy.
Except for speed and low light.

My wedding experience, the bride isn’t having a perfect day since one of the bridesmaids hates the dress she had to buy , some girl had to get makeup when she only wears trucker hats , two groomsman are always hammered and the mom and dad are watching thousands get squandered . And then when you get to the park , it rains .
And I was doing film , so unlike digital , every shot costs . There will ask for pictures of every old aunt so they feel included , but you know they will never buy the print .

I had 2 Hasselblad CM500 bodies , 4 film back loaders and 6 lens. It was 20k in 1980 dollars . Being all mechanical it was like maintaining a Rolex . I should have bought a townhouse .

An interesting thing about digital vs film.

When documenting things on a jobsite, with film costing a buck a shot, one carefully plans the shot with minimal overlap. With digital being free just take dozens of shots and the info you need later will be in one of the pictures.

Wrong. When a problem comes up the digital missed the one spot where there is a problem. Murphy's Law of Digital Documentation.

I used to develop my own black and white photos. Big difference between then and now is with digital you can take 1000 photos, throw away 999 and keep that one that’s ready to print in 5 minutes. Film, not so much. A lot more care was taken.

I took the commercial course at Sheridan College , in the pre digital era . We learned to develop BW , they had a Color lab that was too expensive on a small scale . I remember seeing the “instant labs” at the Japan Camera locations , I was in awe.
In the end my buddy that ran a commercial custom lab was printing everything, including high end art ( think Freeman Paterson) with an Epson 10 tank ink printer . Labs were closing everywhere, home developing setups were sold off the peanuts , the industry stood on its ear overnite .

How ironic that digital photography was actually developed by Kodak . Whoops .

I was at Henry's a few years ago and the SLR's of the pre-digital era were in a bin for $20 each and not selling. You could get more for a Kodak box camera as an antique dust collector.

Premium roll film cameras like Leica and Hasselblad still have a following , and some vintage stuff like Rollie , but most is now just a paperweight . My beloved Nikon FM2 which I took around the world may be worth $25. And my i phone is more sophisticated and has internal editing.

I have some pictures developed from Kodachrome slide film that (to me) are better than a lot of my digital stuff. There’s just something about the clarity and colour depth.
