Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

Fair, my Volt does the same thing with the passenger seat....but, there's solutions for the drivers seat issues of shifting weight or whatnot - if occupancy=0 for more than, say, 5 seconds, then start dinging an alarm and start prompting for some driver interaction that would signal the driver is actually in the seat - say, step on the gas pedal and flip on the high beams or something. If no response, then Autopilot=disable.

There's lots of very easy "are you still there?" crosschecks that could be done on any modern car that's smart enough to have an autopilot system to begin with, simple seat occupancy sensor aside.
I'm all for the autopilot aiming for the closest bridge abutment if nobody is in the drivers seat. Cleans up the gene pool a bit. If you're actually there and it is a sensor issue, you should have no problem taking control and preventing the fireball.

Even Netflix (or maybe its the Firestick or Chromecast?) will shut off if you dont respond to the "Are you still there?"

Nice little throwback article from 1994. If only Ford kept developing and pushing, they'd own the market instead of Tesla.

"electrics has not arrived" the Ford exec is quoted.... Some automakers are saying the same thing about Hydrogen and will be kicking themselves in a few years....

bmw has sensors in the dash which check for your eyes looking forward.

I saw a video online somewhere a few days ago of a Tesla's driver facing camera processing (in real time) what it detects. It can detect if someone has sunglasses on or not, if they're staring at the road or a phone...etc etc. Can't find the video at the moment.

So if it can do all this...how the hell can it not go "Uh, I see the back of the seat and zero indication a human is present, autopilot off!".

In all seriousness, it should pull over as quickly as possible and call the police as the driver may be in medical distress. Forward the pictures taken by the interior cameras and the speed/location as part of the filed report.

Canoo just had an almost complete management turnover. Hyundai partnership was killed a while ago. My buddy is on to the next interesting idea. It will be interesting to see if canoo ever delivers a vehicle.

There are some technical reasons why I don't think they are anywhere close to production-ready. They brag about not having mechanical connections to the driver's controls ... except that motor vehicle safety standards the world over, require such mechanical connection for the steering and the brakes (via hydraulics). Not having a mechanically-connected steering wheel/column affects the fundamental design of the vehicle, and until they do that ... it's a non-starter. It's also quite unlikely that their "autonomous driving" is any closer to being production-ready than anyone else's is ... not very.

A prototype Canoo has been spotted out in the wild, nevertheless. On a VW internet forum, someone thought it was an ID Buzz, but this was quickly sorted out. ID. Buzz spotted in the wild

The first few of Rivian's delivery vans are apparently hitting the road (but are they ever ugly): Rivian Electric Van Begins Delivering Amazon Packages In Oklahoma

Another EV start-up, Arrival, has apparently delivered the first of their electric vans to UPS: UPS Vans to Get the Electric Treatment (Although it hardly matters - This one is the best looking of the bunch!)

I agree, from what I know Canoo is not production ready. I was intrigued with the Hyundai partnership as Canoo could have done what I maintain Tesla should have done and supplied an electronic powertrain to a conventional manufacturer that knows how to produce cars (and get them approved).

My buddy has moved on to another startup. It will be interesting to see if he can get one of these to succeed.

Hahaha. For the vans you showed above, it's like politics. You spend most of your time scratching your head and wondering what they were thinking and then pick the least offensive option.

That thing is a winner based on looks alone. absolutely stunning.

GM are you taking notes?

I don't particularly care for the drawn-with-a-ruler styling of the Ioniq 5, but the Kia EV6 is the same thing underneath, drawn rather more expressively. It will still take some getting used to.

I still like the Audi Q4 e-tron more.

No they are too busy getting ready to make cars for Honda/Acura.

GM will be the winners of that arrangement. They will finally get a glimpse into how to properly engineer and design a real car.

this is just a stepping stone for Honda, until their e-Architecture platform is ready and it will be a proper Honda.

And you’ll pay for it lol

Not all its cracked up to be for some customers....

I can see it happening. It won't be until you can "fill up" on the road as easily as you can with gas that you'll get less of a flip back.

Maybe hydrogen retro-fitted gas stations are the way to go if that EVSE infrastructure can't meet that easy and quick fill-up need? Not likely but Toyota is pushing that angle strongly ->

On the other side of the world hydrogen is really gaining traction with some serious investments being made.
