Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

And the back bumper. If I bought a Tesla I would probably take a drive to "Mexico" and give is a solid high speed run to see what would fly off while it was still under warranty.
my boss is on his 3rd replacement Model S.

He keeps refusing to accept the panel gaps and poor paint quality, looks like this one is going back too.

If he cared about panel gaps and paint quality why did he buy a Tesla? You either need to not care about things like that or buy from somebody else. The odds of finding a Tesla with all the parts firmly fastened, respectable panel gaps and good paint all on the same vehicle are pretty terrible. Often you are lucky to get one of the three, two is already a unicorn, and he requires all three???

At some point he needs to just walk away as I suspect Tesla will say they're done with that routine, refund his purchase, and bid him adieu.

Not saying sticking him with an inferior quality vehicle is particularly right in the end, I'm just saying that clearly they're never going to be able to supply one to him that meets his standards.

maybe that's what he's playing for that this point. /shrug

Would it not be easier to retrofit batteries underneath containers, and then just connect a cable to the actual truck once it picks up the load?

Any additional weight built into the trailer itself would directly remove cargo carrying capacity due to the way trucks are designed - tractors are designed to carry 12K on a steer axle and 40K on the drive axles (34K in the USA). A regular tandem trailer axle is the same as drives, 40/34.

Removing all the bulk and weight of a huge diesel engine and fuel tanks etc from the tractor will just remove weight from the steer and drive axles, weight which is hard to "push forward" back onto the forward half of the tractor again if the weight of the batteries is situated on the trailer.

It would present issues with some axles ending up too heavy and some ending with wasted capacity by ending up unnecessarily (and unavoidably) light when a uniform load is put into the trailer.

In short, a 10,000# battery on the trailer would cause considerable cargo carrying capacity loss no matter where you put it on the trailer. And cargo carrying capacity is what pays the bills.

It's just the way trucks have been designed. In short, the batteries gotta go on the truck distributed in such a way that they mirror the weight of the original diesel fuelled drivetrain.

I suppose it's a method to enjoy driving a Tesla for 6 or 8 months and walking away scott free at the end...assuming Tesla doesn't skip the "refund your purchase price and bid you adieu" step and goes the "Get ******, you own the damn thing, go get a lawyer if you want to pursue this any further" way instead.

Because it’s a Tesla. No other reason needed. It’s an accessory and although it has its flaws (many flaws for some) it’s no different than other fashion items....you have a Tesla so you are ‘rich’ and appearances matter.

thanks for the clarification @PrivatePilot appreciate the insight.

TFL got their hands on a mach e, and they own a Tesla Y as a long-term test vehicle. Little comparison

I wouldn't put much into the range display on the mach e; who knows how it's been driven up to that point. Apparently they have the car for a week, so we shall soon see. Also, the version that they have, doesn't have the big battery.

I like the outside shape of the Y more ... cleaner shape, not "busy", not trying to look like something it isn't.
I like the inside of the mach e more ... and on my own vehicle, I spend a lot more time looking at the inside, than the outside.
They report the mach e is more comfortable, has better suspension, and is screwed together better, and that the Y has a better fun-to-drive factor.

The Ford has the advantage right out of the gate in not requiring dealers that are far and few between for service. And Ford will sell you parts if you want to DIY instead of Teslas (still) iron grip on things.

Sounds an awful lot like Apple's business model.

They couldn't sell you the parts if they wanted to, the supply chain is abysmal.

Apple sells (genuine) repair parts to third parties now.

A healthy aftermarket ecosystem existed long before that however.

Lots of other cellphone companies also refused to sell repair parts for a long time as well until they were required to by law. People just like to point fingers at Apple...because of course, Apple.
