Any GTAM'ers own an electric vehicle?

A friend of mine cursed at the fact that the car i bought had never been rust checked when he was working on it for me.

Rust check also has an optional "paste" type rust preventative (vs the usual liquid) that leaves a thick almost vaseline-like film on the underside of the vehicle. I had it regularly applied to my truck for many years - it *looks* really nice (as it's tinted black, so it makes everything look brand new again) but if you have to work on it, well....you will be cursed at then as well. ;) You had to basically take clean rags and smear/wipe it off everything you planned to work on.

But, beats things rusting out, or likely in the case or your situation, being seized up.

Wait are you saying you start rustproofing your car after you've had it for 4 or 5 years? You might as well not even bother at that point....

It's *never* too late to start applying rust preventative - even once rust has started somewhere it'll stop it from spreading. My 4-5 years thing was based on the fact that some of the earlier replies (where it's arguably unnecessary up until the vehicle is at least 5 years old) are valid. In the case of all the vehicles we've looked at recently (4-5 years old) they're still 100% rust free so it'd have been a waste, but once that vehicle passes a few more years of winter salt & brine it's still a very worthwhile thing IMHO.

Anyhow, we went and looked at the Volt in question yesterday...too busy last night to write up the full story.

I was disappointed that dealer didn't do as I requested on the phone when I setup the viewing appointment - that was to have it fully charged and plugged in. Instead, it was left dead and not plugged in. Grrrr. The receptionist that took the call apparently didn't pass that request through to the salesperson...although I was left wondering, if I was trying to sell an EV I would expect that people coming to see it would actually expect it to be charged. I'm surprised a big dealership would just leave it dead.

We negotiated in a 2-3 hour test drive an exchange based on the fact that I was kinda interested in driving it on gas a little anyways, and then we took the opportunity to go to the Oshawa Center and pull up to the Flo charging station and plug it in while we went into the mall for a bit. We spent 45 minutes in the mall and the system did it thing - it's really quite a neat system - I checked in via my iPhone, the charging station unlocked the cord, we plugged it in, and I got a confirmation the charge had started. The iPhone app then constantly updated to let me know what was happening back at the car as we hung out at the mall.

As with most charging stations, the charge was free. Hey, free "gas", I'm cool with that. Another reason we like the EV thing.

Since we only had 45 minutes we only got about 10K out of the charge, but it was enough to let my wife drive the car on pure EV at that point and experience it.

When we got back to the dealership this was in my email.

Neat.

Anyhow, the car was great. It's very clean, had never been smoked in, was pretty much loaded short of the backup camera system, and even that wasn't a big deal as my wife quickly exclaimed that she could basically almost see the rear bumper through the little window on the very bottom of the hatch. This isn't the car we looked at, but a picture I found online...but it shows the window perfectly.

Anyhow, the car performed admirably despite the disappointment with regards to it not being charged as requested.

The interior door panels were indeed funky and when I asked the salesperson if that had added to the challenge of selling this particular car in question (given the fact it's been on the lot for a few months now and has been price reduced around $4K) he admitted that yes, many males were not exactly enthralled with that. ;)

My wife, on the other hand, loves it - one of her favorite colours is lime green and leafy motifs, so it's a perfect fit. Again, another stock photo below, but this is basically identical to the car in question. The photos on the Trader.ca listing makes the green look way darker than it actually is.

Anyhow, we put our money where our mouth is...and put a deposit on it. Things are still not 100% (I will be coming back Monday evening for another test drive, this time on a full battery (they were plugging it in before I left, I made it clear it needed to be full when I arrived Monday) and my wife is going to do her best to get a better feel for her ability to plugin at work.. Not a deal breaker, but certainly a major consideration.

On the rust-check comment, I was told to NOT do that and plus is rust even an issue these days?
Try buying a Honda and then get back to me on that one.
Love my Hondas, but
They all have rusted on the wheel wells.
Rust checked and washed regularly through the winter.

Good work OP! Look forward to a long term test review. How's the trunk space in the car? Usable or more like a hatch with minimal space? Were they flexible on the price? Or held their ground? My car's ONLY got 150k so far, and I think I can squeeze out a few more out of that SI motor...will have to go easy on that VTEC power!

Trunk space isn't anything close to the cavernous trunk the 300 has, but it's not that shabby either honestly. When we need mega space for anything, I have the Magnum - with it's rear seats folded down you could fit a casket back there with lots of room to spare. ;)

As for price, the deposit is written up based on (mostly) the full listed price...they were quick to remind me it's been dropped by ~3K already since it went on the lot. I plan to negotiate more before handing over the cash, let's put it that way - I do get the strong impression they really want to move this particular car.

how dumb, they did not have the car charged up

tell him you can wait until they drop it to $4k, lol

Kawasaki green!!! awesome!!!

If that stuff is plastic you can probably put some nice vinyl carbon fiber design on the green.

If it is a good deal (good car) you might want to lock it down and not risk losing the time and product due to a few hundred $$$
get them to toss in some maintenance for you
change the brake fluid, power steering fluid, coolant....that's easy for them to do and is of value for you.

It is locked down at the moment having put the deposit on it.

Unfortunatey this morning, a surprise email brought a metric butt-ton of additional hoops to jump through because of the way we wanted to finance things using the 98% equity in our home instead of a traditional loan. Long story. Frustrating. Potentially *very* time consuming.

The issue with the time consuming part is... I'm not sure if the dealer will be willing to wait given the potential delay involved.

Still gonna go for the official second test drive on electric alone tonight after work and then have that discussion with them.

Argh.

No issue. Buy it as finance through dealer then when your house finance goes through pay off the car loan. It's an open loan anyway.

For reasons I don't really want to get into in public I don't really want to do the dealer finance route.

The interest rates are also very high on a used vehicle loan, and I already hate financing things anyways, but that's secondary.

Quick, someone show up with cash and buy it out from under him! ;)

Hope all the hurdles get cleared up!

Still mine until I drop the deposit.

But that'd be just my luck. I am the poster boy for Murphys Law.

Not really. You should be able to get a loan at 4.98% through the dealer, maybe lower although at that price most won't do lower. Like previously mentioned most of the auto loans are fully open so you can just pay it off in a month and not worry about the interest rate.

Try and put some pressure on your bank. Last year I got a home equity loan and it was all done within a week. Dealer shouldn't have a problem with that at all.

Good luck with the purchase!

4.98% is more than double what I can get through the mortgage route which is why I prefer that.

Sure and I get that but if it's a matter of you losing the car you want it isn't going to cost some HUGE sum financing through the dealer and you can just pay the loan off in a month or whenever your line of credit is in place.

fyi the cost of borrowing on a $14,000 car at 4.98% is a little under $1700 over the 4 years which isn't terrible.

Honda had a program where if you buy the ext warranty the interest rate droppped to 1.9%. Not sure if this applies to the Volt but worth an ask.

Secured home equity line of credit should be easy to get in your position, and with flexible repayment terms. It sounds like since your house is soon to be paid off, you could make a couple of interest-only payments on the LOC for the next couple of months, then continue making the same monthly payment into the LOC that you would ordinarily be making on the mortgage once it's paid off - which will pay off the LOC in a hurry.

Returned to the dealership tonight...car was STILL not charged. :angry7:

They had put it on the fast charger across in the dealerships service department but it wasn't showing finished until 7PM, couldn't wait around.

I didn't like what I saw at that point however - battery showed about 3/4 charged at 6PM when I was there, but only 19K electric range showing.

Probably not right (hence the name "guessometer" by many Volt owners apparently), but part of tonights test drive was to exhaust the battery on a 401 jaunt and see how many K it actually got. I can't seem to accomplish that due to their inability to actually prep the car correctly.

Regroup tomorrow evening I think as we can't go back tonight.

And BTW, if it is a GTAM member trying to buy it out from underneath me right now (the salesperson said someone had called today anxiously looking to purchase it kinda no questions asked, which seemed odd), a special thanks to you from me. :/
