Another Baby Left in a Car.

I suppose in that context it would cover you. If you called 911 the first on scene would smash out the window anyway. I guess it's all in the justification after the fact and time passed etc.

Again, just guessing.

GS act doesn't cover deliberate destruction of property, however, I can't see a cop charging you if you saved someone/something. Inferno would know better than me though.

It's a very valid question. Sorry I don't have an answer though.
If it was me I would just identify myself and continue on with whatever task needed done.
For those saying you would know what to do, you wouldn't.

with a crowd that is in panic mode, you would fall it into that same mentality.
Very few step up and take charge. Seen it happen soo many times in all different aspects.

So I have a friend who is a cop and asked him about it

Me: "Let me bounce something off you. Totally hypothetical. I'm walking towards a mall or box store and see a dog or baby in a car today. They're in obvious discomfort but not unconscious or anything. I wait 5 mins and no one comes out so I smash the window. Owner comes out and wants to press charges for the broken window....what do you do?"

Response: "Hard to say. You're acting on good faith. but contacting police or animal services might be a first option. Let's say the guy is a real Richard (Read dick) and calls the police to press charges. You'd be hard pressed to find a cop who would lay the charge. If it were me and I was called to that I'd just mediate it and say 'pay to repair the glass because no justice of the peace in their right mind would convict on it"

Personally, I'd say, first (obviously) check all of the doors to make sure they're locked. Call 911 if you have any concerns. Follow their instructions. If you feel that the animal or child is in serious danger, only then should the window be broken.

To confirm; your cop buddy is suggesting that the vehicle owner pay for the broken glass, right? The way it's worded is a bit vague. I've checked with a couple EMS and police buddies and all are of the same opinion, which is this;

Makes sense to me.

I tried to clarify with him a bit. Sounds like it'd be on a case by case basis. If the would be 'hero' jumped the gun a bit and it wasn't really all that necessary he'd tell the window smasher to pay to avoid police involvement. But if it was remotely warranted and the vehicle owner was being a **** about it....suck it up and pay for your own car. (and hopefully another charge or 2 for the car owner lol)

I regularly drive around with dogs.
I regularly leave my dogs in the truck when going into somewhere for a few minutes
Left them for about 20 minutes yesterday afternoon while in a store
I have a small AC unit in the truck that comes on when the temp in the truck reaches a certain degree
If someone were to smash the window, I am certain the dogs would attack that person...
What happens if someone smashes my window, thinking they are helping the dogs...???

If I were you, I'd seriously have a sticker saying "this truck is fitted with an independant AC unit for the dogs" on a window somewhere. I'm starting to see more people get angry and do something when they see a dog in a car on a hot day now and I don't blame them.

Excuse us superman, but speak for yourself.
What makes you so special exactly?
Do you think only firemen and police have the ability to tend to an emergency?
No wonder they have such inflated egos.
I've seen wicked accidents, fires, injuries, assaults and plenty of panic
Even held a guys half severed leg on while almost everyone else was running around in circles with their phone.

This case isn't even a serious emergency yet, the kid wasn't dead, all they needed to do was get into a locked vehicle.
Why more people don't use simple common sense and logic is beyond me.

Ummmm, if the kid was dead, there wouldn't be an emergency anymore.

Infernobuster's comment is valid for the vast majority of the population, although he should have given the out for those that are able to remain calm and rational in a high stress situation.

As for you common sense question; people don't use it because they don't have it. I suspect it's a product of the sheltered, self-centred lives many live.

You just said "For those saying you would know what to do, you wouldn't."
So are you retracting that comment?
Am i reading it wrong or something?
If no one here would know what to do, i guess the baby roasts?
You just insulted every person that said they would try to help.
How do you know everyone wouldn't know what to do?

Explain more about this ac unit. Do you have a link to a website or pictures? It sounds like a great idea.

I think what he is saying is a lot of people think they would react one way and when it comes down to it they jam up and do nothing.

Not saying ONLY LE/EMS/ES are the ones to react but their training makes them the ones that usually run towards the emergency instead of away from it.

If you are one of those people that react without hesitation you are rare. Sad to say.

With the temperature not even a consideration, who the hell would even leave a nine month old alone in a car? FACS needs to pay a visit to these ********* parents.

thank you, well said.

EXACTLY, regrettably I've had a front seat for a couple horrible instances. Watching people stand in shock , and its real, the shock just paralyses them, including the Captain of the boat we were on that was on fire, you get a real appreciation for who will step up and who will look around.

I hope people don't start busting out windows without assessing the situation. My dogs are often left 3-8 mins while I go to bank machine ect. They are in zero danger and I run a watch. 8 mins and I go back to the car even if I have to step out of line. I'd be pretty bitter if somebody popped a window just because

Bystanders don't know if you've been gone for 7 minutes or 70 though that's the problem. Tricky situation here because I genuinely think people are trying to act in the best interests of the person/animal inside the vehicle. Nobody (I hope) wants to break a window for fun.

Some people panic and freeze, others panic and act. Waiting a few seconds to assess the situation before smashing a car is a good idea with few downsides. If the dog looks happy in the car, don't smash the window. Sure it will get hot in there soon, but right now there is no problem.
