Always knew it - Toronto police cash cow

Lol, another attempt at using common sense and facts to combat "Speed Kills".. Never happen

You know what really pisses me off? 400 series highways with posted speed limits of 90km/h.

410 north of Mayfield drops to 90km/h.. uh why??

Britannia road in Mississauga, between Creditview and Hurontario was always 80km/h. Since they widened it and created an additional lane.. the speed limit is now 70km/h.

This is effed up.

I was driving west past Halton yesterday and the entire left lane was doing 140km/h. I kid you not. It was a beautiful 15 minutes.

Completely agree with the article.

401 should be 120km/hr
DVP should be 100 km/hr
big streets such a Steeles and sheppard should be 70-80KM/hr

I think you might see speed limits getting lower in the GTA.
Why? Well we have the same narrow roads but we are getting more and more drivers each year on the same roads.
This increase in traffic will result in slower speeds e.g. you are lucky to go from one end of the DVP to the other doing 90kmh all the way even at 11pm. So if traffic will bring us down to 90 they might as well move it down to 75 :)

I am guessing that the Government does not want to increase your taxes to pay for more Police therefore they allow the Police to generate their own revenue. The increase in gun crimes are up, more guns and drugs are hitting the streets but sadly no money to be made from that deal.

lol that's the same spot I got ticketed 2 years ago. totally a cash grab spot. coming from an exit ramp going downhill.....who wouldn't be speeding.

I agree with 401 and other 400 series but not with DVP. It one of the worst designed Highways in North America. With so many twists and turns, that people can't take safely at 90 km/h so with a speed limit of 100 km/h it won't be any better.

Nothing will happen. People will ***** and whine while the government will cry the safety battlecry and for the safety of the children. People like the damm tree huggers, especially the ones with families will go "yeah the children safety is more important" and will throw their common sense out the door. In the end, nothing happens.

The solution is simple: over throw the government and establish a regime with an iron fist that follows your rule of law or get the death penalty on site.

The problem is: lowered speeds usually promote more accidents, because of traffic congestion.

We are just ****ed

Too many people in a small space with no way to expand the roadways and clearly no proper subway transit system.

I am just always puzzled for the country with the second largest land mass on the planet we just cram houses within 12 inches or less of each other.

Europe is more congested and I've driven on several highways there. 120,130,140 are common posted speed limits. Highways were generally in no way better than ours, definitely narrower at times.

Canadian drivers are brutal sometimes - I take QEW, heading east towards downtown to work. Why do people slow down around Mississauga Rd. exit? The turn that is there is maybe 3 degrees yet people act as if it was a 90 degree angle or something. Nobody signals lane changes, nobody checks blind spots, drivers are preoccupied with texting or fixing their makeup. Slow pokes hog up the passing lane.

Speeding is the last thing I worry about.

I'm so sick and tired of this. All my speeding tickets, ever, are for going 13-17 over, basically with the traffic. Something has to be done about this. Idiots!

You admit to breaking the law, the cops are doing their job and you're calling them idiots? Does it really matter if they raise the limit to 120, people will then drive 135 to 140, get ticket and complain. If you don't want a ticket, obey the laws. Funny how simple that is.

You didn't read the article did you?

Sometimes the RULES need to examined and if you did some research yourself, your findings would point you to the fact that driving speed does not increase as limits do, there is a "natural rate". Please read the article, do some research, and stop letting others think for you. We would ALL be better off if we thought for ourselves and read.

WTF? When did this happen?

He is referring to a few segments...or at least I hope so. The area between 9th line and Markham Rd. had stretches where the posted limit was 70 and abruptly dropped down to 50. This area is also known to host a pig den on a downhill near a cemetery (talk about not respecting the dead). That 70 stretch was reduced to 60.

I don't know if this is a good or bad thing but the pig den is pretty clean now. Also, the areas past west of Warden that used to be 70 is also 60/50ish? I don't know if they plan to raise it after construction.

Now, if he's talking about Bayview and after being 60, what the holy ****?

You should take your own advice. Maybe you should of taken the time to find out if I read the article rather then assume I didn't. People have this belief that, if you do 15 - 20 over, that they will not get a ticket. Most cops don't ticket you for 10-15 over, but not all cops. People will just assume the same think of the limit is raised, plus raising the limit to 120 now raises the limit on street racing speeds, which is the reverse of what that law is trying to achieve. Our limits are fast enough.

It's not a belief. Again, do some research and read. Being educated is good for the soul.

I'll give you a hint: look up some studies from credible sources that completely shatter what you just said. There are at least 2. I know you haven't read or seen them if you're spewing you're saying what you are saying. Then again, most people hate reading white papers.

I'll help you a bit more: the article speaks about a "natural flow" of traffic. There are studies done, conducted over years, stating that if the speed limit is raised to x amount, the natural flow stays relatively the same. What you are saying goes against these white papers/studies. What you are saying is that your opinion overrides factual evidence.

Here's some MORE advice: look up the flow of traffic on the limitless highway in Germany. If you don't know the name, you really shouldn't be talking about this =/

Also, street racing speeds? Dude........-_________- I'm not going to touch this subject, that's just stupid.
