"Alternative Media" - Who's watching it?

I just did a little calculation, that blew my mind. I calculated "The Big Bang Theory" to cost about $6M per episode; $4.7M just in the top 7 actors' salaries. That's over $270,000.00 per minute. I compared that the JourneyQuest, that wants to fund at $420,000.00 for about 80 minutes of show, because they're actually trying to pay their people at least minimum wage (I'm told $10.00/hour for everyone from the stars, down to the guy who fills the Craft Services table). That's about $5,250/minute. Holy crap! JourneyQuest season 3 would cost about the same as a minute and 33 seconds of "Big Bang Theory"!

That's crazy eh?
Chuck Lorre has the formula, and people keep watching it. I personally don't get it. I watched I think the first season or so, then it became repetitive and just wasn't entertaining. Guess it's what happens when the lowest common denominator decides what stays on TV.

I think that the 'formula' is appealing to the geek audience and the members of the audience who used to pummel the geeks in school. One laughs with them, while the other laughs at them. I'm not exactly sure that it's geeks who are making the show for geeks. I think it's accountants and ad men, who are making the show for money.

On the other hand shows like JourneyQuest, and the many others that I've mentioned, are made by geeks, FOR geeks. And I'm not talking about the people who would have been classed as the 'in crowd', 20 years ago, who have co-opted things like video games into the cool factor.

Here's one I didn't know about. It's sponsored by CBC and filmed in Toronto. More than a few recognizable faces.

The JourneyQuest Kickstarter has less than 3 days to go, with a current shortfall of $176,000.00 from their goal. It would be a damned shame if it isn't renewed because if it doesn't get funded, it's done. It's some of the best geek comedy on the 'net and produced at a cut rate, compared to studio stuff.

A couple of new ones.

"Star Trek Continues" has launched their "To boldly Indiegogo" funding campaign. I'm generally put on edge by Indiegogo's "flexible funding" option that allows campaigns to keep everything, even if they don't make their target, so keep that in mind if you contribute. There's also the potential that CBS/Paramount could land on these guys in the same way that they did the larger "Star Trek: Axanar" project, With that said, these guys do very good work in the original Star Trek universe.

"Lost Hope" is an animated SciFi comedy whose stars include Michael Hurst (Iolaus from "Hercules" and "Xena"). This is their second kick and the can and it looks like a good project.

And "JourneyQuest" was successfully funded in the last 3 hours of their campaign, so it should be in the can and streaming online some time in December :D

*EDIT* I just received my newsletter from the guys at "Star Trek Continues" and I hadn't realized that Gigi Edgley, who played Chiana in "Farscape", is set to guest star in their next episode.

A while back Zombie Orpheus Entertainment helped a guy named JR Ralls fulfill a dream of his; to make a movie. Anyone who played role playing games back in the 1980s likely knows about a little comic called "Dark Dungeons", made by a religious fundamentalist named Jack Chick, that told people how Dungeons and Dragons was the gateway to hell. JR made a movie that told that story completely straight up which made it hilarious to gamers, but would be accepted by such fundamentalists.

While they were helping JR make his movie, ZOE were also making their own mockumentary about the making of the movie. It in no way invokes Poe's Law. There's no question where ZOE comes down on this issue. Folks who have seen screenings of it have apparently lost their stuff. Now they're Kickstarting the release of the movie, "Attacking the Darkness."

DG posted the first episode of the web series that they want to produce, in order to try and entice people to pledge to their Kickstarter.

Last 9 hours of the "Demon Hunters: SOL" Kickstarter and they still need a little over $3K to succeed. These things have been too damned close lately.

LOL ... I felt like the lady main character, watching ... "is this for real?" ... yet I clicked on the "Next Episode" button ... I have no idea where this is going.

This movie was produced for virtually nothing, crewed and edited by volunteers, had volunteer SFX people who did over seven hundred discrete computer-generated special effects, and starred people whose faces most people likely won't recognize, unless you're into the Seattle indi movie scene. It features several local Seattle bands in the soundtrack. I was one of the almost 600 people who backed its DVD/Blu-Ray release, back at the beginning of 2013. Yes, it's cheesy, but it's good cheese. It's also now available for free viewing on Youtube. It's called "Project London." Enjoy :)

But he is really excited about it so I will be checking it out.

I hadn't heard about that one. Sounds Tarantino inspired.

AFK, a New Zealand based web series, is running a Kickstarter for their latest miniseries, "Serena's Journey." The AFK shows are based on the concept that players have been sucked into a MMORPG, like World of Warcraft, and then have to survive as their characters.
